âWell, they soon will be! Did you see how fiercely she defended him?â Agate sighed. âEven Shawn might have a girlfriend soon, and yet you still donât have anyone reliable by your side!â
âIâm right here!â Bobby chimed in as he approached. âAgate, am I not reliable?â
Agate chuckled, artfully dodging the question.
âBobby, where are your parents?â
âTheyâre on their way.â Bobby casually threw an arm over Katherineâs shoulders, the gesture more friendly than intimate. Together, they looked more like childhood friends than a couple.
âAm I not reliable?â Bobby pressed, eager for a real answer, while Katherine raised an eyebrow at her mother, waiting to see how sheâd respond.
âYouâre reliable, Bobby, but isnât your family already arranging a match for you?â
âSo what?â Bobby waved off the concern. âIf Katherine agrees to marry me, Iâll call off everything. She and I have real feelings!â
Agate laughed, her tone playful. âOh, Bobby, your marriage is practically set in stone. Canceling it? Your father would have your legs broken!â
Bobby turned to Katherine. âWould you mind marrying a cripple? Weâve known each other forever.â
Katherine smiled politely, her words blunt but teasing, âYes, I would.â
âHeartless woman!â Bobby exclaimed.
They all walked inside together. Shawn, standing in the courtyard, watched Katherine and Bobbyâs interaction.
âShawn?â Lily called out.
He ignored her and strode over to Katherineâs parents instead.
âMr. and Mrs. Nash, itâs been a while.â
Turner gave Shawn a pat on the shoulder. âShawn, good to see you! Ignore the chatter outside. We know youâre a good man. If you ever need anything, just let us know.â
âThank you. Speaking of which, thereâs something Iâd like to ask for your help with.â
Shawnâs eyes drifted to Katherine, lingering on Bobbyâs arm around her. Sensing the tension, Bobby removed his arm and licked his lips. Oblivious to the silent exchange, Turner asked, âWhat can we help with?â
Shawnâs smile was faint. âIâm of the age where I should be thinking about marriage.â
Agate raised an eyebrow, her eyes darting to Lily. âAsking for our help? Havenât you already found someone you fancy?â
âLily and I are just friends. Thereâs someone else Iâm interested in, but she doesnât share the same feelings.â
âOh, really?â Agateâs curiosity piqued. âAnd which lucky woman might that be? Would you like us to play matchmaker?â
Shawn began, âIâve taken a liking toââ
âDad! Mom! Letâs find a place to sit!â Katherine interjected, cutting Shawn off.
âExcuse me, young lady, I have yet to complete my inquiry!â Agate complained.
Katherine dragged her parents away.
Those privy to the situation could discern that Katherine was intentionally concealing something. Bobby was on the verge of smirking when he glimpsed Shawnâs frosty glare from the periphery of his vision.
