âDo you love me?â Adrian inquired, his eyes brimming with ire.
âWhat are you talking about?â Joelle attempted to resume packing, but Adrian pivoted her around and grasped her wrist. He exercised restraint, wary of causing her any harm.
âAnswer me. Do you love me?â
Joelle detected the subtle undertone of grievance in Adrianâs voice and, after a moment of contemplation, replied with measured patience, âOf course I do. Why else would I acquiesce to your proposal?â
The burden in Adrianâs heart finally began to dissipate. He enveloped Joelle in his arms, his tall frame overshadowing her stature.
âAdrian, whatâs wrong?â
âKnowing you love me is enough to reassure me youâre not leaving willingly. You have no choice; I understand,â Adrian murmured.
âWhen did I say I was leaving you?â Joelle pushed him away, regarding him with bewilderment.
âI never stated that I was leaving you.â
âThen why are you packing to leave home?â
âWhen did I say I was leaving home?â
Adrian gestured towards the suitcase beside them, which was already half-filled with folded garments.
âArenât you packing to leave?â
Joelle finally grasped the reason behind Adrianâs peculiar behavior. She stood on tiptoe and playfully pulled at his ear.
âLook closely. Whose garments are these?â
Adrian gazed at the black suitcase, slowly realizing it contained mostly his clothes. After a moment of silence, he said in a hoarse voice, âYouâre right. I should be the one leaving.â
He turned around, feeling utterly dejected at being driven away by Joelle.
Joelle noticed something was wrong and quickly pulled him back.
âAdrian, whatâs going through your mind? Didnât I ask Callan to inform you? Weâre planning a trip, and youâre joining us!â
Surprised, Adrian asked, âWhat trip?â
At that moment, Callanâs call interrupted them. âMr. Miller, I apologize. Earlier today, Ms. Watson asked me to inform you about the trip, but it slipped my mind.â
Adrianâs expression grew tense, a calm facade masking his brewing anger. He remained silent, yet it was clear he was on the verge of erupting.
Beside him, Joelle quickly pieced together what was going on. Callanâs failure to mention the trip plans made Adrian think that Stephen had threatened her, leading her to choose Ryland instead. This misunderstanding explained Adrianâs anxious behavior since his return, repeatedly questioning if she still cared for him.
âItâs natural for Callan to forget things now and then, especially with his age and all the work he has,â Joelle said, attempting to ease the tension for Callan.
After the air was cleared, Adrianâs demeanor visibly relaxed.
âWhere are we going?â
While continuing with her packing, Joelle explained, âI need to look for Ryland. Iâve reached out to Shawn for help, but itâs crucial not to depend solely on others. Weâre going to check every possible place Wade could be. Iâve also confirmed with Callan that youâre free of any major commitments this month.â
