Then, he reached into his bag and pulled out a small first-aid kit. Inside, antiseptics and Band-Aids were neatly organized, ready for use.
âYouâre quite prepared,â Katherine commented.
âI brought it for Lily.â
Katherine fell silent.
An emotion she couldnât quite name tightened in her throat. How could she have expected anything different?
She felt foolish, now.
Shawn looked up, his lips curling into a playful smirk. âDo you really believe that?â
Katherineâs heart raced, the rhythm suddenly erratic. This hot-and-cold act of his was driving her insane. Just moments ago, when Lily was still with them, he had seemed so distant, almost indifferent.
âWhy wouldnât I believe it? You two seemed to be getting along so well. If you end up together, donât forget to thank me for playing matchmaker.â
Shawnâs smirk didnât waver. âAnd why doesnât Bobby ever take care of you?â
âHow would I know?â
Shawn believed there was nothing real between Katherine and Bobby.
The rumors of her engagement to Bobby were just thatârumors.
Shawn had asked Katherine out today to gauge her feelings.
If Katherine was genuinely planning to get engaged to Bobby and had no interest in him, heâd never bother her again.
âAny regrets?â Shawn asked as he helped her remove her shoe.
Katherineâs attention was completely absorbed by his words, so she didnât notice when he had already taken off her shoe and sock.
âWhat would I regret? If I were going to regret anything, do you think Iâd have introduced Lily to you? You two seem to be getting along pretty well, right?â
Shawn glanced at Katherine and continued tending to her wound. âLilyâs a great person, really. But sheâs not you.â
Katherine lowered her gaze, tracing the path they had just walked. âIâm not as good as she is. Sheâs perfect for you.â
âDo you remember back when we were in school? You once asked me a question.â
âWhat question?â
Shawn helped her slip her shoe back on. âWould you rather be with someone you love, or someone who loves you?â
Katherine didnât even remember asking that question, but it sounded like something she would have said back then. She couldnât recall what she had chosen.
âIf I remember correctly, I chose to be with someone I loved.â Shawn met Katherineâs eyes. âBack then, you chose someone who loved you.â
Katherineâs breath hitched. She had unknowingly set a trap for herself back then. And now, she found herself caught in it.
