âMr. Miller, could you help me out with this Lego set? The instructions are a bit confusing.â
âSure thing,â Adrian responded, aware that Dunn likely understood the manual but was looking for a distraction. Dunn had been devouring rather sophisticated books lately, so a Lego manual shouldnât have posed a real challenge.
Dunn led Adrian through the house to the garden, where the delicate sound of a piano solo floated through the air.
âThatâs my aunt playing. Sheâs just won a prestigious international prize and has come back to celebrate. Sheâs quite gifted.â
âUh-huh.â Adrian wasnât particularly interested.
They continued to a playroom where Dunn handed Adrian the manual, and he dove into assembling the set.
âDunn?â a womanâs voice called from the doorway.
Dunn looked up and addressed her politely.
âAuntie.â
Mila, the woman in a chic dress, studied Adrian. It had been years since her last visit home, and though Adrian seemed vaguely familiar, she couldnât place him.
âAnd who might this be?â she asked, expecting Adrian to introduce himself.
But before he could speak, Dunn chimed in, âThis is Mr. Miller, Aurora and Rylandâs dad.â
Mila was already familiar with Aurora and Ryland.
âOh, you must be Joelleâs husband, right?â
Adrian detected a hint of hostility in her tone, unsure if it was directed at him or Joelle.
He decided to let it slide for the moment. With Dunn there, he felt it wasnât the right time to engage in a deep conversation with Mila.
âI need to go get Aurora and the others,â Adrian said to Dunn.
âAlright, Mr. Miller.â
As Adrian brushed past Mila, she let out a sharp gasp and stumbled slightly towards him.
He instinctively reached out to steady her but then remembered Joelleâs previous advice. He quickly pulled his hand back and stepped away instead.
Mila grabbed her calf, thrown off balance by her own theatrics.
âWould it really be so hard to lend a hand?â she snapped at him.
âIf youâve hurt your leg, you might want to see a doctor about that,â Adrian replied indifferently, then walked away without another word.
Mila was taken aback. She wasnât used to being dismissed so abruptly.
âAuntie,â Dunn said, approaching her with concern, not realizing Milaâs act. âWhatâs wrong with your leg?â
âItâs nothing.â Mila brushed him off and crouched down to his level. âTell me, how are Joelle and Adrian doing? Iâve heard that Adrian is rather distant and hardly ever comes home since they got married.â
With a shake of his head, Dunn responded, âNo, they have a good relationship.â
