Leah approached, indicating that these invitations were to be tossed out.
âIs he skipping all of these?â Joelle inquired.
Leah exhaled deeply.
âHe once attended a social event and ended up being ridiculed for only having Callan by his side. Since that incident, heâs shunned these types of gatherings.â
Typically, those who were married brought their spouses to such events. Joelle pictured Adrian at these social scenes with Callan, his reliable assistant, and couldnât help but smile at the thought. It wasnât Callanâs fault, though.
Callan was a remarkable and adaptable assistant; Adrian wouldnât have retained him if he didnât excel, especially since Amara had recommended him.
Joelle acknowledged Callanâs significant support to Adrian in various aspects.
She turned to Leah and asked, âHas Adrian thought about bringing a female secretary to these events?â
Leah tightened her lips, glanced around to make sure Adrian wasnât nearby, and leaned in to whisper to Joelle, âSince your separation, he hasnât mingled with any women at all. Currently, all his secretaries are men. Though heâs never mentioned it, I suspect heâs worried about making you jealous!â

Joelle chuckled as she sorted through the pile of envelopes, plucking one out.
âLeah, could you have Adrianâs tailcoat cleaned?â
Leah caught on instantly, her eyes twinkling with amusement.
âMs. Watson, Mr. Miller is so lucky to have you by his side!â
âCarry on with your tasks.â
Joelle then found Adrian in the study, deeply absorbed in the paperwork sprawled across the sofa.
Sneaking up behind him, she draped her arms around his neck.
âWe shouldnât skip Stephen Finchâs 88th birthday party.â
Stephen, Fredâs grandfather, was known for his playful nature. At a previous celebration, he had playfully chided Adrian for his bachelor status while Fred flaunted his family.
Fred had his wife and a son. Adrian had only brought along Callan, his loyal assistant. Stephen had made quite a spectacle of it.
After that incident, Adrian had severed all ties with him.
âI wonât go,â Adrian stated firmly.
Joelle tousled his hair affectionately and murmured, âIâll be there with you, along with Aurora and Ryland.â
Adrian hadnât expected Joelle to join him, since she was still evaluating him. But her words sparked an unexpected sense of hope in him.
âWeâre too old for games. This time, Iâll help you mend fences with Stephen!â Joelle assured him confidently.
Adrian set his documents aside and drew her into a deep, lingering kiss.
The room was filled with the soft sound of their lips meeting, the moment stretching out like an eternity.
When Joelle began to run out of breath, Adrian gently pulled away, their eyes locking in a heated gaze as they both panted for air.
