As Joelle and Aurora exited the store, a middle-aged woman accidentally dropped her wallet. Aurora was quick to spot it and picked it up. âMaâam, you dropped your wallet.â
âOh my! Thank you so much! Youâre such a sweet girl!â
âMaâam, you look absolutely lovely today!â
Raelyn Sampson was so delighted she couldnât help but keep smiling. âIt seems my investment in beauty treatments was worth every penny!â
âHere, lovely lady, this is yours.â
âThank you.â
Raelynâs wallet was stuffed with cash; it had been so long since she was home that she was unaware of the local advancements. Transactions were now completed, orders were placed, and services were requested through apps on peopleâs phones.
She looked to Joelle for assistance. âCould you help me figure out how to use this app?â
Joelle took her time explaining the process step by step.
âThank you both. How about I treat you to a drink?â
âNo, thanks!â Joelle kindly declined. âWe need to get going now.â
âAlright, take care! Goodbye!â
Raelyn gave them a cheerful wave. A bodyguard close by stepped forward. âRaelyn, are these your daughter-in-law and granddaughter?â
âHey, donât be silly.â Raelyn shook her head. âI got paid to give birth to Adrian, and he has nothing to do with me anymore.â
âBut didnât you return after hearing about his situation from Effie?â
âI just wanted to see how heâs turned out and if the person heâs with is decent. As long as heâs happy, thatâs all that matters.â
âBut Iâve heard heâs not doing well.â Raelyn shot him a look, and the bodyguard, realizing he had crossed a line, quickly fell silent. Raelyn snorted coldly, her emotions masked.
As Joelle arrived home, her phone rang with Shawn on the line. âJoelle, it looks like I might not make it back for the parent-child sports day.â She had talked to Shawn that afternoon, and he had promised to be there, so this sudden change surprised her.
âIâll find another solution. If that fails, Iâll reach out to Bobby.â
âCan we depend on Bobby?â
âHe should be⦠I think.â
Someone called out to Shawn in the background, prompting him to quickly wrap up the conversation. Aurora emerged from her room, clutching a stuffed toy as large as herself. âMom, I want Mr. Miller to come to the sports day with me.â
Joelle noted that Aurora had brought up Adrian more than usual today and seemed especially excited. Rather than probe further, Joelle crouched down to Auroraâs level. âI promise, if Bobby canât make it, Iâll ask Adrian to step in.â
âOkay.â
After tucking Aurora into bed, Joelle attempted to call Bobby, but he informed her apologetically, âI canât make it, Joelle. Iâm on vacation abroad. Youâll need to find someone else!â
âAlright.â
Joelle stared at her phone. Adrianâs number was still displayed from a few minutes earlier. She hesitated, wondering if calling Adrian would give him too much satisfaction.
Meanwhile, Adrian was still at his office, working late. Callan entered. âMr. Miller, thereâs something important you need to know.â
Adrian had been engrossed in his work since noon, his expression intense as he reviewed the documents. âMake it quick.â
âThe security team secretly watching over Aurora reported that she had a conflict at kindergarten. Not only was Aurora slapped, but Joelle also ended up confronting the other childâs aunt.â
Adrian looked up sharply, and a moment later, his anger erupted as he slammed down his pen. âWhy wasnât I informed earlier?â
Callan bowed his head. âI got tied up this afternoon and only just got the details.â
Adrian grabbed his coat and made for the exit. Callan shouted after him, âMr. Miller, youâre scheduled for a remote meeting!â
âHandle it yourself!â Adrian walked away, then paused. âSend two people. Whoever struck my daughter, ensure they get a taste of their own medicine.â
His anger was palpable, and Callan knew better than to push further. He felt some relief seeing Adrian show concern for someone; the past few years had seen Adrian become increasingly isolated and temperamental, pushing others away.
âUnderstood.â
Adrianâs unexpected late-night arrival took Joelle by surprise. Upon entering, his first concern was not Aurora, but Joelle herself. âWere you hurt?â
Joelle shook her head. âNo.â
That she was unharmed was enough for him. Adrian moved deeper into the room. âHowâs Aurora?â
âSheâs asleep. I spoke with her afterward to ensure she wasnât frightened, and she seemed alright.â
Adrian remained concerned. âWhat caused the conflict?â Joelle hesitated, worried it might sound like she was complaining to Adrian.
âItâs nothing serious. Children argue sometimes. It was the other childâs aunt who escalated things.â
Adrian settled beside her. âNext time, Iâll come with you to pick her up.â
âThereâs no need.â
âIt is necessary.â Adrian fixed her with a serious look. âI want people to know you have support. If something like this happens again, I donât want you handling it alone.â
