In the evening, Aurora and Dunn settled into his study. Fred glanced in as he passed by the room. âYou kids can stay here, but leave the door open, okay?â
Aurora asked, âWhy?â
Dunn nodded understandingly at his father. âGot it, Dad.â
âGood.â
After Fred moved on, Dunn turned back to his laptop. âYour dad responded to our last email. He suggested a video call with you.â
Auroraâs face lit up with excitement. They adjusted their headphones, and with a couple of clicks by Dunn, Rafaelâs familiar features filled the screen.
âDad!â Aurora exclaimed, her voice a mix of joy and longing. Rafaelâs face showed signs of weariness, but at the sight of his daughter, a strained smile appeared. âHey, Aurora. Iâm sorry.â
âDad, why are you away? Donât you miss me?â Auroraâs voice trembled slightly, her eyes glossy with the onset of tears. Dunn handed her a tissue just in time as tears began to spill.
âIâm really sorry, sweetheart. Iâve had to deal with some unexpected problems. Itâs been hard.â
Auroraâs voice was hopeful yet insistent. âThen come home soon!â
âI canât come back yet,â Rafael admitted with a strained smile, the weight of his financial troubles pressing down on him. After Daltonâs passing, his inheritance had defaulted to his youngest daughter, who was unlikely to assist Rafael financially. He needed to secure his own funds before he could consider returning.
âDad, do you not want me anymore? Everyone says youâre not my real dad! Are you going to send me back to Mr. Miller?â Auroraâs voice quivered with vulnerability.
Rafael was taken aback by her directness. He glanced at Dunn, who sat supportively beside Aurora, and nodded slowly. âIt seems youâve heard some of the truth.â
Dunn interjected, âMr. Romero, I discovered that Auroraâs mother and Mr. Miller were married before she was with you.â
Má´Êá´ á´á´á´ á´á´á´s ɪɴ É¢á´ÊÉ´á´á´ á´Ês.á´á´á´ âYes, thatâs correct,â Rafael acknowledged, his hands clasped tightly, masking his troubled expression. âAurora, youâre not my real daughter. Your father is indeed Adrian.â
Although Aurora had braced herself for this confirmation, the reality of the words stung. Yet, she looked up at Rafael with resolve. âDad, youâll always be my dad. Iâll never forget all the good youâve done for me.â
Rafael, moved by her words, felt a sense of peace wash over him despite the circumstances.
Then, Dunn asked curiously, âWhy did Auroraâs mom divorce Mr. Miller? Was he unkind to her?â
Rafael sighed deeply. âGrown-up matters are complex, Dunn.â Dunn considered this for a moment before responding, âI guess thereâs a lot I still donât understand.â He showed his smartwatch to Rafael. âI saw something at the hospital thatâs confusing me. They seem to be together again. If they still love each other, why did they split up in the first place?â
Rafael could see the faint outlines of Joelle and Adrian on the tiny screen. Dunn was a straightforward boy, unlikely to make up such a story. It appeared that in his absence, Joelle and Adrian had reconciled, possibly to provide the two children with a stable family environment. Rafael knew Joelle had held feelings for Adrian for many years.
Rafael chuckled. âDunn, why so curious about adult matters?â
Dunnâs gaze was earnest. âI just donât want Aurora to feel like sheâs losing another father figure.â
Noting the deep concern in Dunnâs expression, Rafael responded, âAlright, Iâll explain. Just understand that sometimes adults make mistakes.â
âOkay.â
Rafael proceeded to recount the history between Joelle and Adrian, focusing on the positivesâlike Joelleâs long-standing affection for Adrian and how Adrian had eventually recognized his faults and sought to rectify them.
Later, Joelle picked up Aurora to go home. That night, Aurora was restless and hardly slept. The following day, during an announcement about an upcoming parent-child sports day at kindergarten, the teacher encouraged participation.
Aurora was lost in thought until her classmate, Chuck Barker, spoke up, causing her to snap out of her reverie. âAurora canât join!â
Aurora, startled and a bit defensive, replied sharply, âChuck Barker! Whatâs that supposed to mean? Of course, I can participate!â
Chuck scrunched his nose, asserting, âItâs obvious, isnât it? You donât have a dad!â
Auroraâs face flushed with anger. âI have a dad!â
âYouâre making it up! Itâs always your mom or the nanny who picks you up. Iâve never seen your dad around!â
Auroraâs voice rose, defiant. âI do have a dad!â
âThen why isnât he here? Prove itâhave him pick you up today!â
The teacher intervened, noticing the rising conflict. To diffuse the situation, the teacher paired Aurora and Chuck together as the students left the classroom, hoping to foster some peace.
Upon seeing Joelle approach, Chuck turned to Aurora with a triumphant sneer. âSee? I told you it would just be your mom. You donât have a dad!â
