Dalton had two daughters. The younger one was innocent and protected, while the elder one was known for her strong-willed and assertive personality, often clashing with Dalton on business issues.
Upon the groupâs arrival at Daltonâs home, his younger daughter received them. In her early twenties, she had tears on her face and spoke in a gentle tone.
Yet, before they could talk much, Daltonâs older daughter came storming down the stairs, demanding they leave immediately. âRafael Romero murdered my father! Isnât that enough?â Shortly after their departure, Daltonâs younger daughter ran after them. âExcuse me, how is Dr. Romero doing?â
Joelle and Adrian looked at each other. âSorry, we havenât seen him yet.â
âOh, okay.â She tried hard to fight back her tears.
Joelle, who had experienced similar feelings before, understood what she was going through. âYou donât believe he killed your father, do you?â
The girl abruptly looked up, and amid their stares, she nodded. Joelle said, âIf you have any information, please share it. Once he is convicted, he will be imprisoned.â
Looking nervously towards her house, the girl twisted her skirt in her hands. Everyone waited for her to speak, but she stayed quiet for a long stretch. Joelle didnât pressure her. âIf anything comes to mind, please get in touch.â
âOkay.â
They all went back to the hotel. Later that afternoon, Joelle got a call from the girl. âMy sister has a huge debt, and she fought with my dad repeatedly over it.â
Joelle recorded the important detail. âThank you. Is there anything else you can share?â
After a brief pause, the girl suggested, âYou should speak with my fatherâs assistant. He knows more.â
âAlright.â
She ended the call quickly, scared of being overheard. Adrian also received news. âDaltonâs assistant has moved to a farm since Dalton died.â
They decided to visit the farm. But as they left the hotel, Belle and Liza blocked their car.
Belle was an older woman and Liza was pregnant, which made it difficult for them to confront them harshly. âJoelle, youâve heard the latest on Rafael, right?â
Losing patience, Joelle rubbed her temples. âShawn, can you deal with this?â
Shawn exited the car and began to argue with Belle.
âYouâre just trying to keep us in the dark! Why would you do that to us? My son is in deep trouble now, and youâre not telling us anything!â
âPlease, letâs not escalate this further.â
âShawn, in what way are we making this worse? Arenât we entitled to know whatâs happening with Rafael?â
Katherine let out a sigh of frustration. âLook at Shawn! Now, watch how I handle this.â She exited the car, planted herself firmly with hands on her hips, ready to take on both of them. As the disagreement intensified, Adrian took the driverâs seat, fired up the engine, and drove away decisively.
Belle attempted to chase the car for a few meters but was unable to keep up.
Though taken aback, Joelle had to admit it was a smart maneuver.
She activated the GPS and guided Adrian. They drove through the night, reaching the farm a couple of hours before the break of dawn.
They parked in the remote wilds as night began to shift to morning. Soon, they would be surrounded by the stunning expanse of green fields.
Joelle glanced at Adrian. A night without sleep had left its mark with stubble now dusting his chin.
Their tiredness had faded, replaced by a heightened sense of alertness. Joelle and Adrian exited the car and began to inquire at each house.
Yet by morning, they still hadnât found any leads.
This farm was vast, and Joelle was utterly drained.
Supporting her, Adrian approached an older woman to request some water.
He inquired, âHas anyone new come to live on the farm lately?â The woman merely shook her head, choosing to remain quiet.
Adrian had been wary of her from the beginning. Just as he was about to ponder further, he heard the sound of a glass dropping near Joelle.
Suddenly, Joelle staggered, her body weakening and starting to fall.
Rushing to catch her, Adrian was caught off guard by a swift strike to his neck from the woman.
He blacked out immediately.
When he regained consciousness, he found himself and Joelle tied up back-to-back, locked inside a sheep pen.
Voices were audible outside.
âMiss, these two were snooping around here looking for me. I disguised myself as an old woman and deceived them.â
âExcellent. Kill them tonight. We canât afford to have the truth about Rafael being framed come to light!â It was Daltonâs elder daughter speaking.
Adrian felt a tug on his hand. âJoelle, are you okay?â
âI didnât actually pass out,â Joelle whispered. âWhen the attorney mentioned ketamine earlier, I became wary. I recognized the smell of ketamine in the water that was given to me. After you collapsed, we were brought here. It looks like heâs the one weâre looking for.â
Adrian was genuinely surprised by Joelleâs keen observation.
âAdrian, now the real question is, can you untie these ropes?â
âI think I can manage that, but you have to agree to one thing first.â
