Joelle arched an eyebrow in surprise. âIs your company in some kind of trouble?â
Katherine waved a hand. âLetâs not dive into that mess. Iâm already working on untangling it.â
Joelle knew Katherine well enough to recognize that if a solution were truly in sight, Katherine would have kept quiet. The fact that she was even venting about it suggested the storm was fiercer than she let on.
âMaybe I could ask my brother to lend you a hand?â Joelle offered.
Katherine chuckled. âYour brother? He can barely keep his own ducks in a row. What could he possibly do for me?â
âActuallyâ¦â Joelle hesitated. She knew Shawn was managing a substantial business empire overseas, with assets that could probably fund a small nation. Though she never got the full picture, Shawn had once assured her that their family wouldnât need to worry about money for three lifetimes.
But there was a catchâShawn had sworn Joelle to secrecy, making her promise never to reveal this, not even to Katherine.
âMy brother could probably help you out,â Joelle finally said.
Katherine shook her head. âNo, thanks. Iâll ask Bobby. Besides, Iâm worried your brother might still harbor feelings for me. Things could get awkward, and I donât have the energy to deal with that.â
After Katherine left, Joelleâs unease gnawed at her. She picked up the phone and called Shawn.
Shawn listened in silence before speaking. âIf she doesnât want my help, Iâm not going to force it. She mentioned Bobby, right?â
âDonât you still care about Kathy?â
The line crackled with sudden intensity. âWho said I was into her?â
âThen why did you pay so much attention to her before?â
âThat was becauseâ¦â Shawn calmed down and covered his forehead. âI thought she was the one who was pregnant. I never really had feelings for her.â
âReally?â
A little sheepishly, Shawn admitted, âYeah.â
âAlright, let Kathy figure it out on her own then.â Joelle had briefly entertained the idea of matchmaking them, but it seemed the threads of fate were tangled in ways she hadnât anticipated.
Shawn called his assistant. âI want you to find out whatâs going on with Katherineâs company.â
The assistantâs eyes widened in surprise. âMr. Watson, are you finally planning to reveal everything to her?â Such a revelation would surely shake the ground beneath their feet.
âNo,â Shawn replied with measured calm. âAdrian has some projects for me. I want you to pass those on to Katherine, but make sure she doesnât know itâs from me. Find a way to help her quietly.â
âUnderstood, Mr. Watson.â
Later, Rafael and his family entered Joelleâs hospital room. Joelle instinctively tried to sit up, but Belle was quick to stop her.
âSweetheart, you need to rest,â Belle chided gently. âRafael already told me everything. Itâs his fault for sneaking out to drink late at night and stressing you out.â As Belle spoke, she playfully jabbed Rafael.
Joelle greeted Belle with a warm smile before turning her attention to Rafaelâs sister, Liza Romero. âLiza, itâs been ages!â
Liza returned the smile. âJoelle, it has been too long.â Belle looked at Joelle with concern. âI was planning to have you and your brother over for dinner. But it looks like weâll have to push that back. Joelle, letâs discuss the wedding plans after youâve fully recovered.â
Joelle nodded. âIâm sorry for causing you worry.â
âAs long as youâre alright, thatâs all that matters.â They sat and chatted until the sun dipped lower in the sky. Liza eventually glanced at her watch. âItâs getting late, Mom. We shouldnât keep Joelle any longer.â
âYouâre right,â Belle agreed. âJoelle, weâll head out now. Take good care of yourself.â
âBye,â Joelle replied.
As they prepared to leave, Liza couldnât resist teasing Rafael, âArenât you going to see us out?â
Catching the hint, Joelle spoke up. âRafael, why donât you walk them out?â
Rafael complied, following them to the door. Belle linked arms with Liza, a contented smile playing on her lips. âNow that things between you and Joelle are sorted, your father and I can finally sleep easy. And with two beautiful children, a boy and a girl, itâs like a dream come true.â
Liza glanced at Rafael. âRafael, are you marrying Joelle just because of the children?â
âNo.â Rafaelâs expression turned somber. âIâve had feelings for Joelle for many years.â
Belleâs eyes widened in surprise; this was news to her.
âReally?â
âYes,â Rafael confirmed.
âI always thought you had no interest in romance, keeping your feelings locked away so tightly! Now I understand why youâve stayed away from home these past three years!â
Lizaâs smile faltered, her gaze lingering on Rafael. On the third day of Joelleâs stay in the hospital, Gina said she wanted to see the children.
âGina, the children are with my brother right now. I was in a car accident recently and Iâm still recovering in the hospital.â
âWhat?â Ginaâs tone shifted to one of alarm. âJoelle, are you alright? Iâm coming over right now!â
âGina, itâs really okay.â
But Ginaâs worry couldnât be soothed, and she arrived at the hospital within twenty minutes.
âJoelle, youâve got to be more careful! Just hearing about a car accident gives me the chills. You know, your mother passed away in a car accident.â
Joelleâs eyes dimmed with sorrow, and Gina quickly closed her mouth.
