She bolted up to a sitting position and scowled at him.
âI dare you to say that again.
â
Nathan, on the other hand, remained lying.
He even went so far as to pull the quilt up to his shoulders.
âLetâs break up,â he said, his voice low and thick.
Pain shot through Lucindaâs body.
âWhy?â she demanded.
She had no idea what was making him say these things, nor could she even begin to imagine the thoughts that were running in his head.
âMaybe⦠I think Iâve grown tired of you.
â
Nathan pulled the quilt higher, covering his face and muffling the last part of his words.
If Lucinda didnât know any better, she might have thought he was nervous.
Lucindaâs anger flared up at the thought.
âGet up, right now!â
She grabbed him by the ear and pulled him up.
âLook me in the eyes and say it again!â
Nathan winced in pain, but he still refused to look at her.
He would try to sneak a glance, but always seemed to decide against it at the last minute.
Lucinda huffed, her face a mask of anger, her tears threatening to spill from her reddened eyes.
âYou want to break up and cancel our engagement.
Are you serious? Tell me, do you really mean it?â
She shouted toward the end, though her voice cracked a little.
Nathanâs heart skipped a beat, and he grew gloomier.
âYesâ¦â
âBullshit! Look at me and say it to my face!â
Lucinda grabbed him again, this time by the chin, and forced him to face her.
She was boiling with anger.
âYouâd better think carefully before saying anything else.
This will be the last chance that I give you.
If you waste it, then itâs over.
I will never forgive you, no matter what excuses you make, even if you kneel at my feet and beg for mercy! Never!â
