âIs it because of Lucinda? Do you like her?â
Jenniferâs knuckles turned white from gripping the bed sheet too hard.
She was afraid that Hilliard would give her an affirmative answer, but she still held onto hope.
Unfortunately, Hilliard didnât say anything.
He simply shook off of her hand, and left without looking back.
Outside the door, Presley and Lucinda were chatting idly on the sofa.
They were startled when they saw the scary expression on Hilliardâs face as he walked out of the room.
Presley stood up and asked nervously, âMr.
Simmons? Er, whatâs wrong?â
Ignoring her, Hilliard looked straight at Lucinda and said in a low voice, âYou knew she was only pretending to be sick.
â
Lucinda gulped.
Was Hilliard really angry at her?
It was the first time that he had ever treated Lucinda like this.
She averted her gaze guiltily and stammered, You seeâ¦â
Without giving Lucinda the chance to explain, Hilliard walked right past her and left.

Lucinda had half a mind to catch up to Hilliard, but Presley stopped her and pulled her into the room to check on Jennifer.
Jenniferâs eyes were red and puffy.
It seemed that she had just cried and was in a bad mood.
Presley threw her arms around her daughter and said sadly, âI told you, Jennifer.
Hilliard is a cold man.
But you insisted on doing that.
Now you only got hurt.

Jennifer bit her lip and didnât say anything, staring into space blankly.
Presley knew that her daughter was too stubborn and wouldnât change her mind, so she turned to Lucinda for help.
âLucinda, please help Jennifer.
You have to find a way to make him stay in Forden!â
Lucinda shook her head gravely.
âIt wonât work.
Hilliardâs a man of principle.
If he doesnât like someone, then no one can change his mind.
â
Perhaps this was too harsh on Jennifer, but Lucinda had no choice but to be honest.
It was better to break it to Jennifer now than to let her hope for something she couldnât have.
Presley sighed in disappointment.
Seeing such a sad scene and knowing that she indeed couldnât help, Lucinda turned to leave.
