Nathan looked on coldly.
âNot going to dodge?â
Kyson chuckled through his pain, his voice tinged with both desolation and allure.
âWith two high-level agents from the National Security Bureau on my case, dodging isnât really an option, is it?â
His smile, though touched by blood, did nothing to mar the handsome features of his face.
The last thing he wanted was another stint in a high-security prison, courtesy of Nathan.
It would be easier to just endure Sonnyâs blows right now; they seemed more tolerable.
Kyson mulled it over thoroughly and, with a grin, posed the question.
âAre a few punches Like these enough to blow off some steam?â
His words bordered on taunting.
Sonny, incensed, seized his shoulder and shoved him violently against the tree.
âJerk! Youâre asking for it! Iâm itching to pound you all night, smash that arrogant grin, and see what youâd have left to flaunt to Lucinda!â
Yet, Kyson kept smiling, unfazed.
Nathan, on the other hand, had cooled off quite a bit and started to inquire earnestly, âDo you know why Lucinda canât remember anything?â
Kyson shook his head.
âI donât really know.
Sheâs forgotten everything.
I talked to Hilda; she told me she found Lucinda out in the fields, hurt and passed out.
Out of kindness, Hilda brought her home.
When Lucinda came to, she remembered nothing.â
How did she get hurt? Could it have been some accident while she was fleeing? A wave of sorrow washed over Nathan, filled with regret for not being there to protect Lucinda.
Yet, whether Lucindaâs memory loss was genuine, judging by her actions tonight, was still up in the air.
She would need to be taken to the hospital for a check-up.
In any case, they would have to wait until tomorrow.
âLetâs head back to the house.â
Nathan walked ahead, noticing that the two men behind him didnât seem inclined to follow.
Holding the kerosene lamp, he cast a steady glance back at them-a look that seemed to urge them to come along unless they wanted to fall victim to the voracious mosquitos.
Sonny grinned and remarked, âNathan, you head back first.
I want a few more moments alone with Kyson.â
Kyson was such a jerk that he almost deserved another beating.
Nathan understood Sonnyâs intentions and offered no objections, simply advising, âBe careful, if youâre gone too long, theyâll start to get suspicious.â
âAlright, donât worry.â
More than 10 minutes passed.
Sonny and Kyson made their way back to the small house, one trailing the other.
