Jennifer felt annoyed.
What a fool!
She shook her head, sighed, and walked towards the door.
It took Hilliard a moment to grasp the underlying message in her words.
Was she inviting him to Lunch?
He hurriedly put his work aside and caught up with Jennifer.
âMiss Turner, Iâm new here and not yet familiar with the environment.
Would it be possible for us to have lunch together today?â
Jennifer continued walking and cast a glance back at him.
âOn your very first day as my secretary, youâre asking me to treat you to lunch? Quite bold of you.
â
He found himself momentarily speechless and anxious, as he searched for a good response.
âI meant that we could have Lunch together, and Iâll handle the bill.
â
Jennifer looked at him with curiosity and complimented, âThatâs an interesting reply.
Youâve always been reserved and distant, but now youâre making an effort to please me.
Progress indeed, not bad.
â
Hilliardâs lips curled into a smile and a surge of happiness filled him.
But then Jennifer added, âBut didnât you mention losing your phone and wallet and being out of
money? Thatâs why you turned to my family for help.
So, how do you suddenly have the money to pay for lunch? Will you inform the restaurant that youâre from the Simmons family? Or did your lost wallet miraculously reappear?â
Hilliardâs complexion paled.
Did he accidentally reveal the truth? Was Jennifer onto him?
As expected, Jennifer, with a cold and sarcastic tone, accused him, âYour acting skills are terrible.
If you want my sympathy by faking misery, try harder to make it seem convincing.
â
Hilliard was left speechless.
She then turned and headed for the elevator.
Inside, a heavy silence hung in the air and the atmosphere was tensed.
Hilliard desperately tried to express his feelings, but his efforts seemed futile.
This left him dispirited.
He attempted to clarify, âThat night at your house, I wasnât lying.
I really wasnât with my wallet and phone, and I was walking in the rain throughout the night.
â
Jennifer remained skeptical.
âMy parents allowed you to stay.
You donât need to put yourself through the stress of explaining anything to me as I wonât believe you anyway.
â
Ding!
