Nathan anxiously clasped her hand.
His body trembled, and his jaw visibly tensed.
She turned to him, gently stroked his handsome face, and reassured him with a smile.
âRelax, Nate.
I feel good.
â
Despite her soothing words, his face remained grim, covered in cold sweat.
In a hushed voice, he grumbled, âI canât make myself relax.
I wish giving birth were that easy!â
Lucinda only smiled.
After enduring six long hours of pain, she finally gave birth to her two babies.
The nurse tenderly washed the babies and swaddled them in tiny blankets.
She cheerfully exclaimed, âCongratulations, Mr.
Payne!
Youâre now the father of a boy and a girl.
Come and take a look at them!â
But Nathan remained unmoved, seemingly uninterested in the newborns.
Instead, he focused on wiping the sweat off Lucindaâs forehead, gazing at her with both pity and affection.
In a weak voice, she asked, âWonât you go and see the babies?â
With a serious countenance, he just wanted to remain by her side.
âTheyâre not as important as you.
â
Lucinda chuckled and her heart filled with warmth.
However, she was still eager to lay her eyes on her babies.
âGo on, bring the little ones.
I canât wait to see them,â she said.
Nathan had no option but to get up and approach the nurse.
The nurse took the initiative to point out.
âThe baby boy came out first.
Isnât he adorable?â
Upon seeing the babies, Nathanâs expression turned into a puzzled frown.
He asked in disbelief, âAre you sure theyâre really our babies?â
The nurse chuckled and reassured him.
âAbsolutely! You were in the delivery room.
Thereâs no chance we could have swapped the babies, right?â
Laughter erupted among the nurses.
