Chapter 0233 âWell... At the bar earlier, there was this guy,â Emma explained. âHe was hitting on Hannah, wanted to buy her a drink. He mentioned something about a hiking trail nearby with a waterfall at the end.â
Noahâs ears perked up at this. âA guy was hitting on Hannah? She didnât go anywhere with him, did she?â he asked, partially to ensure her safety and partially because, well... he was curious.
âOf course not. She turned him down,â Emma said.
âShe told him she was married,â Amber added. âShowed him her ring and everything. He didnât seem deterred, and gave her his business card, but she threw it away when he left.â
e girls spoke, a small part of Noah felt a surge of relief? Pride? He pushed the feeling aside, ing on the matter at hand. âDo you think this guy could be involved?â
a shrugged. âWe donât know, but itâs the only lead weâve got. He was really persistent.
aybe turning him down pissed him off,â Emma suggested.
Noah turned to Drake and Zoe then. âWe need to find this hiking trail with the waterfall. It might be our best shot at finding Hannah.â He pointed at Drake. âDrake, you come with me. As for the rest of you, wait here for the police. Tell them everything you know. And call us if you hear anything, anything at all.â
Viona, Emma, and Amber nodded. But Zoe pursed her lips and folded her arms across her chest, still wearing her sparkling red dressâalthough now with Drakeâs jacket on top of it. âNo way,â she said. âIâm going with you.â
Noah huffed, already brushing past her. âYou should stay here. Itâs dangerous-â
âI know the trail theyâre talking about. Iâve been here before, a few years back. Iâve hiked that same trail.â
With a sigh, Noah relented; it was best to have Zoe with them in that case, he supposed. âFine,â he said, flinging the car door open. âYou navigate. Drake, you keep trying to track Hannahâs phone.â
âI never stopped,â Drake growled.
With that, they sped back off into the night, Zoe giving directions as Noah pushed the car as fast as it would go. The winding mountain roads were treacherous in the dark, but Noah navigated the curves and switchbacks with ease, so completely laserâ
focused on finding Hannah that he hardly even noticed.
âThere!â Zoe suddenly called out, pointing. âThat side road. The trailhead should be down there.â
Noah jerked the wheel, sending them careening down a narrow dirt road. Trees whipped past on either side as they bounced along the uneven surface.
âAre you sure about this?â Drake asked, gripping the dashboard. âThis doesnât look like a road that leads to a popular hiking trail.â
âIt has to be,â Zoe insisted. âI remember coming here years ago. Itâs a bit off the beaten path, but thatâs what makes the waterfall so special.â 1 Drake narrowed his eyes. âWhen did you even... Nevermind,â he said, shaking his head.
They drove for what felt like miles, the road getting rougher and narrower. Noahâs heart sank as they 1/2 +25 BONUS Chapter 0237 rounded a bend and found... nothing. The road ended abruptly in a small clearing.
âIs this... it?â Drake asked, leaning forward.
âNo...â Zoe whispered. âWait, this canât be right. I was sure...â
Noah slammed his fist against the steering wheel. âDammit, Zoe! You had one job!â
âHey, donât get mad at me!â she bit back. âItâs dark.â
Drake leaned out the window, peering out into the darkness. âMaybe we missed a turn somewhere? Or there could be a hidden path we canât see in the dark.â
âLook, Iâm sorry,â Zoe said softly. âI really thought it was this way. Maybe my memory isnât as good as I thought.â
Noah took a deep breath, trying to calm the anger and frustration building inside of him. Getting angry wouldnât help Hannah. He needed to think clearly.
âAlright, alright,â he finally said. âItâs not your fault, Zoe. Weâll find another way.â
With a heavy heart, Noah turned the car around, the tires kicking up dirt and gravel as they headed back the way they came.
As they drove back toward the main road, Noahâs mind raced with possibilities. Where could Hannah be? Was she hurt? Who had taken her, and why?
And underneath it all, a small voice, the voice of his wolf, whispered:
âWhy did it take something like this for you to realize how much she means to you?â
