Lingling stood by the dessert table, absently picking at a mini tart while trying to ignore the cacophony of laughter and conversation around her. Her parents had gotten caught up with Orm's parents, leaving Lingling feeling more like a spectator than a participant at the lavish party. She took a deep breath, wishing she could fade into the background.

Just as she was about to retreat to a quieter corner, she felt a gentle nudge at her side. Lingling turned to see Orm grinning at her, a mischievous glint in her eyes.

"Hey, tart girl! You look like you could use some fun," Orm said, her voice bright and cheerful. "Want to escape this place for a bit?"

Lingling blinked in surprise. "Escape? How?"

"Follow me!" Orm declared, grabbing Lingling's hand and pulling her away from the dessert table.

They weaved through the crowd, Lingling's heart racing as she realized they were heading outside. The night air was cool and refreshing, a welcome change from the stuffy atmosphere of the hall. Orm led her to a small garden illuminated by twinkling fairy lights.

"This is my secret hideout," Orm said proudly, gesturing around. "I come here when I need a break from all the boring adult stuff."

Lingling couldn't help but smile at Orm's infectious enthusiasm. "It's beautiful! I didn't know this was here."

Orm plopped down on a bench, motioning for Lingling to join her. "So, what's your story, Lingling? I want to know more about the 'smart one' everyone talks about!"

Lingling felt her cheeks heat up, but there was something comforting about Orm's genuine interest. "There's not much to tell. I study a lot. I like history and... well, I'm not exactly the life of the party," she admitted, glancing down at her shoes.

Orm leaned closer, her eyes sparkling with mischief. "Come on! Everyone has a wild side! What's the most rebellious thing you've ever done?"

Lingling thought for a moment, her heart racing. "Uh, once I stayed up all night studying for a test and forgot to sleep," she said, giggling at the memory. "Does that count?"

Orm laughed, her carefree spirit making Lingling feel lighter. "That's so tame! We need to spice up your life. How about this-let's make a pact! For every exam you ace this semester, I'll take you out for ice cream! But for every time you feel overwhelmed, you have to join me for a spontaneous adventure!"

Lingling couldn't help but laugh at Orm's enthusiasm. "You really like ice cream, huh?"

"Only the best flavors! But more importantly, I want to see you smile. You seem like you carry the weight of the world on your shoulders," Orm said, her tone shifting to something softer.

Lingling felt a warmth spread through her. "I guess it's just... family expectations. I don't want to disappoint them."

Orm nodded, her expression understanding. "That's tough. But remember, you're more than just your grades. You have a life outside of study halls! And I'll help you find it."

Lingling looked at Orm, feeling a sense of hope bloom within her. Maybe, just maybe, she could let herself enjoy this unexpected friendship.

"Okay, it's a deal," Lingling said, extending her pinky. "Ice cream and adventures, here we come!"

Orm's face lit up, and she hooked her pinky with Lingling's. "Perfect! I'll hold you to it!"

As they sat together, sharing their dreams and fears, Lingling felt the tension in her shoulders begin to ease. For the first time that night, she felt like she belonged. Orm's laughter and bright personality wrapped around her like a warm blanket, and Lingling realized that perhaps they were more alike than she had thought.

Just then, Orm stood up, striking a dramatic pose. "And now, for my next trick! I shall make us invisible to all the boring adults inside!"

Lingling giggled, "How do you plan to do that?"

Orm spun around, pretending to cast a spell. "Abracadabra, boring be gone!"

Lingling couldn't help but laugh, her worries momentarily forgotten. "You're ridiculous!"

"Ridiculously awesome!" Orm corrected, winking at her. "Now, let's head back before they send a search party!"

As they returned to the party, Lingling felt lighter. For the first time, she saw Orm not just as the carefree girl from her class, but as a true friend. With each moment shared, the connection between them grew stronger, and Lingling realized that maybe this unexpected friendship was just what she needed to navigate her own world.

And as the night continued, surrounded by laughter and new beginnings, Lingling felt a spark of hope-perhaps she wouldn't have to face her challenges alone after all

As Lingling and Orm stepped back into the bustling hall, the lively atmosphere engulfed them once more. Orm was immediately drawn to a group of familiar faces across the room, her eyes lighting up. "Oh! There's my old friends!" she exclaimed, waving enthusiastically.

Lingling watched as Orm rushed off to greet them, her cheerful energy instantly captivating the group. Lingling felt a pang of loneliness wash over her as she stood on the sidelines, feeling slightly forgotten in the midst of Orm's joyous reunion.

Just then, a small voice piped up beside her. "Are you feeling left out?"

Lingling turned to find a little boy standing next to her, his dark hair tousled and his big brown eyes filled with curiosity. "Um, kind of," she admitted, her heart softening at his earnestness.

"I'm Kai!" he introduced himself with a bright smile, his confidence radiating as he puffed out his tiny chest. "I'm Orm's little brother. She always forgets about me when her friends come around."

"Nice to meet you, Kai! I'm Lingling," she said, kneeling down to his level. "And don't worry, I think Orm just gets excited. She's really nice!"

"Yeah, but I'm awesome too!" he declared, puffing his chest even more. "Wanna be friends? I can show you all the cool spots in this place!"

Lingling couldn't help but laugh at his enthusiasm. "Sure, I'd like that! What's your favorite spot?"

"Come on!" Kai grabbed her hand, pulling her toward the dance floor, where a small group of kids was dancing to the upbeat music. "I like to dance! Watch me!"

Lingling smiled, her earlier anxiety fading as Kai started to show off some silly dance moves. She found herself clapping and laughing, encouraging him as he spun around and attempted exaggerated dance moves, his little feet moving with all the flair of a seasoned performer.

"You're really good!" Lingling cheered, and Kai beamed at the compliment.

"Thanks! I know some cool tricks too," he said, winking in a way that only a child could pull off. "Like this!" He jumped and twirled, landing with a flourish that made Lingling clap even louder.

As they danced, Lingling felt lighter, the weight of her earlier loneliness lifting. Kai's infectious spirit was endearing, and his flirtatious antics, despite his young age, made her chuckle.

"Do you think Orm will notice we're gone?" Lingling asked playfully, glancing back toward the group where Orm was still chatting animatedly with her friends.

"Probably not! But we can have more fun without her!" Kai said, sticking out his tongue playfully. "I bet you're way more fun than those boring adults anyway!"

Lingling laughed, feeling a warmth spread through her. "I'm glad you think so!"

As the music shifted to a slower tempo, Kai took her hand and spun her around, trying to lead her in a playful dance. "Okay, now you're the princess and I'm the knight! Protecting you from the boring people!" he declared, puffing out his chest again, causing Lingling to burst into laughter.

Just then, Orm returned, her eyes wide with surprise. "Lingling! I was looking for you! And who's this?" she asked, noticing Kai spinning around with a big grin.

"Kai! I'm his new friend!" Lingling said, beaming at Orm. "He's an awesome dancer!"

Orm laughed, shaking her head. "You two look like you're having a blast! I'm jealous!"

"Don't be! You can join us!" Kai exclaimed, tugging on Orm's arm to pull her into their little dance party.

Lingling felt a surge of happiness at the sight of the three of them together, their laughter blending with the music. With Kai's playful spirit and Orm's vibrant energy, Lingling found herself enveloped in a newfound sense of belonging. It seemed that her world was slowly expanding, one sweet connection at a time.

As they danced and laughed together, Lingling realized that maybe this night wasn't so lonely after all. With Kai by her side and Orm's contagious spirit lifting her up, she felt a spark of joy ignite within her-perhaps unexpected friendships could blossom in the most delightful way
