Iâve just lost ten years of my life.
The moment we stop in front of the house, Lara darts out of the SUV and runs up the stairs. âNisa! Alya Hanim!â she shouts as she runs inside.
I set after her, and Iâm just in time to see her hug the older women. âThank God,â she breaths with intense relief. âI was so scared.â
I stop and stare at the three women I love more than life itself, so fucking thankful Lara was able to ward off the attack.
Fuck, sheâs incredible.
I need to give her shooting lessons.
I glance at Emre, whoâs on a call. Heâs probably making arrangements for the injured men and those we lost.
Then Lara mutters, âIâm sorry you couldnât get your supplies.â
I rub a hand over my face. My phone vibrating in my pocket has me pulling it out. Seeing an unknown number, I answer, âYou donât train your men very well.â
âThatâs just the start, Demir.â
âWe can meet right now and end this. I have some time available before dinner.â
âDo you think this is a joke?â he snaps, clearly upset that he failed. âJust give me the girl, and no one has to die.â
My eyes flick to Lara, whoâs staring at me.
âThe only way youâll get Lara is by killing me, and that will never happen,â I say with confidence lacing my words.
âDonât beg for mercy when I shove my gun down your throat,â he tries to threaten me.
âI dare you to try.â
âLet me speak to Lara,â he demands, her name sounding bitter on his tongue.
âNo.â
âLet me speak to her!â he shouts.
Lara starts to walk toward me, and I shake my head. âAnything you want to say to her, you can say to me.â
Mazur lets out a throaty chuckle. âTell her Agnieska is alive. If Lara comes to me, I wonât kill her.â
Frowning, I bark, âWho the fuck is Agnieska?â
Laraâs eyes widen with shock as Mazur mutters, âHer mother. Lara has twenty-four hours to return to my house in Seattle before I put her mother down like a dog.â
I watch as Lara covers her mouth with her hands, her eyes glued to me.
I let out a humorless chuckle. âI know youâre in New York.â
âIâll be in Seattle tonight. We end this farce then.â
âOh, Iâll end it.â Then I think to say, âI want proof of life.â
âIâll send it.â
The moment I cut the call, Lara asks, âWhat did he say about my mother?â
I walk closer to her, not sure whether I should tell her. Mazur could be lying.
âNothing.â
âYouâre lying.â Her chin starts to tremble. âTell me.â
âThereâs no proof.â
âOf what?â
Just then, my phone vibrates in my hand. I open the message and press play on the video.
Thereâs an older version of Lara sitting on a chair, the camera trained on her. Her face is covered in bruises.
Fuck.
âLaraâ¦â She swallows hard as her face crumbles.
âTalk, woman!â a voice I donât recognize barks.
âLara, nie przychodź tutaj. BiegaÄ.â
âBitch!â
The recording ends, and my eyes snap to Lara.
âMama,â she breathes, then she sinks to her knees and lets out a devastating cry. âNoooo!â
I quickly crouch and engulf her in my arms. âIâll get her back for you,â I promise. âIâll go and fucking kill them all. I will bring your mother to you.â
âSheâs alive,â Lara sobs, then pulls back. âI need to see it again. I didnât understand what she said.â
I hold the device between us and press play again.
âLara, nie przychodź tutaj. BiegaÄ.â
âDonât.â Lara shakes her head, and I play it again. âRun? I donât understand!â
âIâll get it translated.â
I forward the message to Elif with the instruction to translate it and see what else she can pick up in the background.
âWeâll know soon,â I promise Lara.
âAllah Allah,â Nisa whimpers. âMy heart canât handle this. Letâs have tea.â
Helping Lara to her feet, I wrap my arm around her shoulders. We all move to the kitchen, and as Nisa gets busy setting snacks out and making tea, my phone vibrates again.
Lara, donât come here. Run.
I show it to Lara, and as she reads it, her face crumbles with heartache.
I pull her against my chest, promising her again, âIâll find your mother and bring her to you.â
âPlease. Iâll do anything to get her back,â she begs.
Her words put the fear of God in my heart because I know without a doubt that Lara would sacrifice herself for her mother.
My eyes meet my grandmother. Today she looks eighty-four. The attack took a toll on her.
I canât let this go on for a second longer.
Pushing Lara back, I lean down to catch her eyes. âDonât leave the house. Iâm trusting you to keep my grandmother and Nisa safe while I go get your mother.â
She nods, her eyes swimming with emotion.
âPromise me youâll stay here,â I demand.
âI promise.â
I press a kiss to her mouth, taking a deep breath of her innocence. âSeni çok seviyorum,â I murmur, then I let her go and walk out of the kitchen.
âWhat did he say?â I hear Lara ask.
âThat he loves you very much,â Nisa translates, tears in her voice.
Walking out of the house, I gesture to the guards that weâre leaving. âVengeance,â I mutter to Mirac.
Emre jumps in next to me in a nick of time.
âAny news on the men?â I ask.
âMuratâs okay. Heâs already on his way home.â Emre glances at me. âYusuf is still in surgery, and we lost four men. Doruk, Aslan, Dean, and Harry.â
âFuck.â I glance out the window as sorrow for my men shudders through me. âArrange their funerals and compensate their families.â
âAlready on it.â I can feel Emreâs eyes on me. âWhatâs the plan?â
âWe attack as soon as Elif can tell me what the fuck is going on in that house.â Knowing sheâs not God, I let out a sigh as I pull my phone from my pocket.
I bring up Viktor Vetrovâs number and stare at it.
Heâs a part of the Priesthood. Youâve been there for them whenever they needed you to help them.
Pressing dial, I bring the device to my ear.
âBlyadâ! This is a surprise. To what do I owe the honor,â Viktor answers.
âI need your help.â
âWith?â
âI have an address. I need to know whatâs happening in that house, how many people there are, and if a certain target is present. I have to attack as soon as possible.â
âSend me the details.â I hear him move. âIt will take me a couple of hours to get my ass to Seattle.â Then I hear him shout, âLuca, Gabriel needs us.â
Fuck.
I let out a sigh.
âWeâll be there in three hours,â Viktor says. âWhere are we meeting?â
âMy club. Vengeance.â
The call ends, and I lower my hand to my thigh.
âYou did the right thing,â Emre mutters. âThey owe you, and we can really use their help.â
âI know.â
I canât risk Mazur getting away this time. Or Laraâs mother dying. Thereâs too much at stake.
With Viktorâs expertise in surveillance and being able to sniff out information, it will make things easier. The manâs part fucking bloodhound. Lucaâs powerful, he has the manpower to back mine.
Within the next twenty-four hours, Mazur will take his last breath, and Lara will be reunited with her mother.
Even if it costs my life.
Pressing dial on another number, I wait as it rings.
âStathoulis,â Nikolas answers.
âI need you in Seattle.â
âWhere?â
âVengeance.â
âIâm just kissing my wife hello and goodbye, then Iâm on my way.â
âWhy are you kissing me hello and goodbye?â I hear Tessa, his wife, ask. âWhere are you going?â
The call ends before I can hear his explanation.
