At this point, Adam smiled in an embarrassed manner; he lowered his head and said, âBut you havenât promised me yet! Others say youâre a flirt, but I donât think so. To me, youâll always appear pure and loyal! Even though we arenât lovers, but we turned out to be best friends!â
Rae didnât expect things to turn out this way; if Rae and Adam were best friends, then how did he end up in a car accident?
âWhen we were together, weâd go out drinking, partying, and sometimes, we went drag racing! Rae, you even drove up to 180 km per hour, donât you remember?â Adam seemed to be deep in thought, nostalgically recalling past memories.
Rae stuttered, â180?â
âYeah! You havenât sped like that afterward, have you?â
Rae nodded, âNope, never again!â
âHow about we-âAdam stopped speaking; he looked down at his legs in an upset manner.
Rae burst out, âAdam, go do rehab; itâll be difficult, but I think if you keep at it, youâll definitely be able to walk again!â
âRae!â Adam sounded a bit emotional, âI-â
âI believe in you!â Rae cut him short. She knew that he needed encouragement right now.
Rae continued, âI still want to go speeding, so letâs make a deal! If you donât mind, I still want us to stay friends!â
âOf course!â Adam immediately shook his head, âWhy would I mind, as long as youâll still have me around!â
Rae laughed.
Adamthen said, âBack then, even with your cheerful personality, for some reason, you always seemed to burst out crying after drinking. Youâd hold onto me and bawl, saying how you still missed him and how much your heart hurt over Reuben, that man you loved! You would madly think about him and wanted to go find him, but I donât know why you didnât. You were always so depressed that I didnât know what do but put on a smile and try to console you...â
Rae sank into thought; it appeared that the real Rae really was in love with Rueben, but then they separated in the end?
Adam continued to talk, âYou said it then, that man who went overseas was the only one you wanted. So you tried hard to follow in his footsteps, but then, out of the blue, you stopped mentioning it one day, and you even seemed a bit self-destructive. You seemed to have lost that shine and glimmer, and became like an empty shell compared to your past.â
Rae pondered a bit, then asked, âDid you know how many friends I had then? For example, do you happen to know how many intimate male friends I had?â
Adam froze at such an unexpected question.
He looked at her in a puzzled way, âWhy do you ask? Or did you suddenly remember something? Do you think you had a lot of male friends then?â
Rae shook her head, âNo! I didnât remember anything, but I just had a feeling, but I canât remember. When I came back to City B, a lot of people mentioned it to me. Since I couldnât remember my past, I was especially afraid of someone using that against me and slandering my name. You know how it is with my family; itâs tough for my father, and Iâve got to uphold the family reputation. Even if I canât bring any honor to the family, I sure canât bear to ruin it. So I just want to know, just what happened back then?â
As she spoke, Rae seemed rather depressed; she recalled to her mother, who was still lying on the hospital bed, her life hanging by a thread. All these things that are happening to the Baxter family was really out to come after Rae.
She felt like the responsibility was a huge burden, so she asked in a serious manner, âThis is also how I make up for my actions in the past, so I hope you can tell me everything you know!â
Adam nodded in understanding. Looking at Rae distressed like this, he thought carefully and seemed to remember something, âRae, for a while, you were really out of it and completely not yourself. Once, I thought I saw you get into a Rolls-Royce Phantom. I know your familyâs wealthy, so I didnât think much of it and thought it was your familyâs car. But now that I think about it, I think there was an elderly man in the car. I didnât see his face clearly, but I never asked you about it either. But thinking back, it looked like you two were fighting; you looked pissed, while he was smirking! I didnât get a good look at him, and I thought it was your personal business, so I never asked and you never mentioned anything about it.â
Rae was surprised, âAnything else? Do you remember anything else that seemed out of the ordinary, like this event?â
Rae was quite concerned that she sped up talking.
Adam looked at her in disbelief, âRae, I think your questions are quite weird; are you sure you didnât remember something awful?â
Rae shook her head, âItâs because I canât remember anything that I feel like Iâm kept in the dark. I feel like Iâm suffocating and canât breathe, do you know what thatâs like?â
âI get it!â Adam also nodded, âI totally get you!â
âSo, please, donât hide anything from me!â Rae felt like she could gather some useful intel from Adam about her past. It felt like quite an important lead to figure out how Rae died. Right now, she just wanted to get to the truth. At this point, a hint of awkwardness seemed to flash by in his eyes.
When she raised her head to look at him, she noted a glimmer in his eyes. Since she was a cop, she had a keen sense of noting when something felt off. When she saw that glimmer in his eyes, her sixth sense told her that he seemed to be hiding something from her. And so, she looked at him right in the eyes; she didnât blink and didnât say anything. She just looked at him deep in the eyes with a stern expression.
Adam looked like he wanted to say something; his expression was uneasy and his face turned red. Rae found this behavior odd, and even felt a bit disappointed. If Adam really liked Rae, then just what was he hiding from her? Was it something good or bad? Rae couldnât tell just yet.
However, she couldnât stand that heâd hide something from her, since he was currently her main lead and the one least likely to lie to her. So, she had to get the info out of him.
She glanced at him again, and in an interrogative tone, asked him slowly, âAdam, youâre not hiding something about my past from me, are you?â
Adamâs eyes widened; as if by reflex, he quickly shook his head.
He hurriedly explained, âNo, no! Itâs not what you think. I donât want to lie to you, and Iâm not lying to you. No, what I mean is, thereâs something, Iâm afraid youâll feel bad if you found out. Youâll feel awkward and wonât talk to me again, just like you did five years ago! Iâm afraid!â
âIf you donât say it or choose to hide it, Iâll get even angrier!â She continued to fix her gaze on him. She had to act this fierce, or else heâd never feel intimidated, and sheâd never find out just what he knew. âTell me, whatâs in the past is done. I just want to know the truth. I wonât blame you or ignore you, I promise!â
With her words of reassurance, Adam looked down; his long eyes lashes covered his eyes, and from this angle, he even slightly resembled Marcel.
Well, they were cousins, so it was natural.
She continued to look at Adam, and secretly scoffed at herself; to think, sheâd think someone else looked like Marcel!
Just how badly did she miss him!
She shook her head to get rid of the useless emotions.
Rae continued to interrogate him, âJust what is it you arenât telling me? It must have something bad to do with you right, so thatâs why you wonât say it?â
Finally, against her onslaught of questions, Adam opened his mouth to ask in a hoarse manner, âRae, do you really not remember anything?â
âOf course!â

Predestined Marriage ï¤Chapter 1718: The End âIâm telling you, everything Iâve said is the truth; and we got in an argument over this. Itâs because of this that I got into that car accident!â Adam looked down again in an uneasy way.
âWhat is it, just tell me!â Rae was dying to find out.
âWe, weâve had sex before!â Adam said.
Rae froze.
Adam began to pour out, âAt that time, you were in a terrible mood; I had a few drinks with you, you got drunk, and I took you back to my place. I couldnât resist you, so we had sex. The second day, you were furious, and you wanted to cut all ties with me. I begged you to reconsider, but you wouldnât listen to me, you just said you wonât ever talk to me again. Iâve looked for you for a long time. You refused to see me, and whenever I went to your school to find you, youâd avoid me. This went on three months, and I couldnât take it anymore, so I got drunk and got into that car accident. Then I became crippled, and I asked someone to help bring me to your school, only to hear that you took a leave. I thought youâd went overseas to look for the man you loved, so I got even more depressed. I went home and barely ever left the house. I didnât bother with rehab either. Itâs not until today that I finally got to see you, and Iâm ecstatic, do you know that? When you called my name, you have no idea just how excited I felt, I felt like Iâve been brought back to life.â
These words made Rae suddenly feel quite awkward as well.
Adam was Marcelâs cousin. Now, sheâd lived with Marcel, and had sex with Adam. Donât they each think that theyâve had sex with her? What about Marcel? Did he know about this already?
