KEEP RUNNING TILL WE'RE LOST
______ die with you.
|ELEMENTARY SCHOOL|
SOMETIMES RUNNING AWAY seemed to be the only option as it was a lot harder to look your problems into the eye.
Feet slapping against the ground repeatedly, muddy water staining her shoes, golden brown leaves flowing behind her.
"You can't run forever fatty!" A menacing voice yelled behind her
Dodging tall oak trees and giant rocks was like some sort of sport but in moments like these she only wished to be athletic.
Kenji could feel her legs giving out and her heart beating out of her chest, she couldn't even begin to understand how she was still running without passing out, I guess adrenaline does that to you.
"When we catch you it's over!"
A few steps away, near the skate park, a young boy was standing with others older than him as they free styled continuously in a circle.
Blake smoothly nodded his head along to the beat and the raps, it was amazing how easily words flowed out of their mouths.
"I'll be damned if this ain't some shit. Come to spread the butter lyrics over hominy gift." A tall brown-skin boy with a thick afro rapped, eyes closed within his own relaxation
"It's the low killer death trap. Yes, I'm a jet-black ninja. Coming where you rest at, surrender."
"Oooo shit!" Someone in the circle chanted "This nigga hot yo!"
"You got five seconds left Doom!" The hood host, Reggie, called out
"Step inside the ring, you's the number one contender. Nigga stop bitchin-" The boy known as Doom was cut off by the beat suddenly ending
"That's it!" Reggie yelled, ignoring the annoyed groans coming from people around him "Who's next?"
Doom sucked his teeth, standing to his full height "Your slot mouth ass always being stingy with time."
"You know everybody get sixty seconds to spit, it ain't no hard feelings." Reggie glanced harshly at him before facing the crowd again "Now, who up?"
Blake stood there silently watching and waiting for someone to volunteer but as time passed, he realized no one was going to, so he did what he only ever dreamed of doing.
"I'll go." The young child spoke aloud, silencing the entire group. With Blake being as quiet as a mouse, no one had ever really paid any attention to him until now.
"What you still standing there for?" Reggie grinned "Come on up here boy."
"That child can't rap." A girl shook her head, nose scrunching, multiple people agreeing with her
Doom raised an eyebrow in curiosity, watching Blake carefully move to the center of the group. He always noticed the boy but Blake disappeared before he had the chance to speak to him.
Blake felt anxiety forming among his brain as well as his stomach tightening but he continued on, for it was too late to back out.
He stood there awkwardly, feeling judging eyes roaming over his embarrassed form until someone began beat boxing. Coughing dryly, he stood pathetically, regretting his once confident words.
"Aye yo, yo," Blake started, allowing his anxious yet nervous mind to go blank
-
"Aye lil man!" A semi deep voice said, jogging up to the young boy
Blake continued walking with furrowed eyebrows, wondering why he was being spoken to, but nonetheless he responded.
"Hey."
"What you did over there was straight fire. I ain't never seen a kid rap as good as you."
The boy shrugged "Thanks."
"I always see you round' here, just watching, but everytime I look up, you gone. You like a Ghost."
"I guess." He plainly said
"You gotta name?"
Before Blake could even open his mouth to speak, his new 'acquaintance' answered for him.
"Matta' fact, from now on yo, your name is Ghost. I'm sure you already know who I am." The older said jokingly
Blake nodded "Don't call me that, and yeah. I know who you are."
"Ayo Doom! You ridin' or what?" Someone called out, alerting the two
Doom eyed the person, looking back down at a obviously confused Blake, to which he quietly chuckled.
"Aye though, I gotta go. You be safe out here ight? I see potential in you, and shit like that is rare these days."
He gave a simple silent nod in response, normally he wouldn't have even acknowledged it.
The brown-skinned boy smiled at him, pulling a crisp hundred dollar bill out of his pocket and stuffing it in Blakes hoodie before carelessly walking away.
As strange as it might be, Blake felt hopeful, maybe even happy, knowing he could finally afford things of need. He'd have to hide it from his parents (for other reasons) but with this money he could do so much.
Still being the boy he is, he never showed it, only staring at Doom as he walked away then doing the same in the opposite direction.
This contentment didn't last long, of course.
Suddenly, he paused directly in his footsteps, scanning his surroundings. He saw people, but he didn't see her, and that upset him.
Blake knew her very well, not to mention how easy she was to read, almost like an open book. So when he couldn't find her running around with the other kids, he knew there was only one place she could be.
Stupidly enough, the girl was in the woods.
Blake's eyes twitched as he stared pass the trees, seeing three boys standing in front of a very small and obviously tired girl. It didn't take long for him to become annoyed.
xâx
"Wow porkchop, I ain't know you could run." The bully, Lucas, smirked at her
"I could probably be a lot faster if ya'll weren't trying to beat me up." Kenji muttered sassily. Which generously earned a chuckle out of Jay and Khalil AKA Lucas's number one backup dancers.
Lucas sneered at both of his sidekicks before facing the scared yet tired girl again.
"You can make all the jokes you want, piggy. It will only get worse for you."
Taking in a deep, long breath, Kenji eyed her attackers with her hands on her knees, bent down just enough to attempt to breathe normally.
"My asthma pump..." She exhaled "I need my asthma pump."
Rolling his eyes, Lucas shrugged "Get it."
Reaching for the pump in her back pocket, she lifted it to her mouth, inhaling the oxygen, it always made her body feel calm and sooth.
Kenji got a good look at the three boys before standing to her less than average height of 140 centimeters, quite short for a fifth grader.
Bracing herself for the insults and physical harm, she closed her eyes, awaiting it but surprisingly they never came.
Opening her eyes once again with furrowed brows and confusion written clear all around her face.
All three bullies stood before her with a ridiculously frightened expression on their faces, not looking exactly at Kenji, but being the oblivious girl she is, she failed to recognize that.
She cracked a smile, laughing loudly "Yeah thats right!" Puffing out her chest proudly "You're scared now, aren't you?"
Suddenly they took off running, leaving her small form to laugh alone.
"Well, that was strange!" She said confusedly, turning around with a brush of her hands
"Oh my God!" Smiling widely, Kenji attacked him in a tight hug "Siah!"
Blake squinted his eyes at the three boys, making a quick mental note before looking down at his companion.
The boy rolled his eyes irritably, even though a small smile tugged at his lips, but he never let it be more than that.
Blake gripped her hand, leading her on the path out of the woods "What did I tell you about being out here? It's not safe."
"I didn't come out here on purpose this time!" She reasoned with a scrunched nose "Lucas and his sidekicks started chasing me!"
He didn't respond, choosing to let silence overcome them but Kenji decided against it.
"Are you walking home with me today?" She asked, swinging her hand with his
"Sure." He answered, sighing dramatically
"Thanks. I feel lonely by myself."
"Why don't you walk with your brother?"
"His mom picks him up after school." Kenji explained
"I thought you two had the same mother." Blake raised an eyebrow
"No. My dad cheated on my mom with his mom." She shook her head, laughing awkwardly "I was like, lol. My mom wasn't though..."
