He rubbed his lips with his fingertips, feeling a faint heat and a bitter sensation. Cadel was lying dead on the bed, lazily pursing his lips. His eyes narrowed in a dazed expression, and he muttered to himself.
âA kiss isâ¦â¦ a kiss.â
A kiss was a kiss, even if it was with a man, even if it was a valued subordinate. Kissing a male subordinate didnât set the world on fire, and it didnât make him sick to his stomach.
Maybe it was because of what Lumen said.
âDonât worry. Iâm not some douchebag who thinks heâs got Leader with a kiss. Well, Leader can think of it as you having me. You actually had me, too.â
Lumen still wore his trademark playful, laid-back smile, and his demeanor was neat as if Cadel didnât have to take his actions seriously.
Cadel didnât react much to that. Partly because he didnât have anything to add, and partly because he was distracted by the system window that popped up as if waiting for him.
[Congratulations! A-grade Knight âLumen Dominicâ has been recruited!]
[Current Knight Order Cost: 13/25]
Lumenâs long-awaited joining ended with a kiss. Cadel had no idea what the criteria for recruiting were, but he didnât want to dig into it, so he just accepted it.
With Lumen in front of him, Cadel looked at his stats before the afterglow of the kiss faded.
Current Grade: A-grade
Maximum Awakening Grade: S-grade
Position: Dealer
Worn Equipment: Dignified Longsword(A), High-quality Armor(A)
Favorability and Loyalty: 89/100
And he found a shocking favorability rating.
âIf itâs 89, itâs only 1 point lower than Vanâs. Since itâs this high, is it because I was sticking my lips outâ¦â¦?â
Lumen spoke up, trying to break the awkward silence, wondering what to make of Cadelâs speechless stare into space.
Cadel wanted to make him feel better, but it was hard for even him to regain his composure after a surprise kiss and an 89 favorability rating.
In the end, Cadel returned to the lodgings after asking Lumen to deliver the mission assigned to the Scarlet Scales Knight Order to Van and Lydon on his behalf.
Cadel could have said more, and he actually had a lot of questions, but he didnât say anything. He just wasnât in the mood.
âWhen I first met him, the favorability rating was 5. When did it get that high?â
That wasnât the only shock. The realization that Cadel had accepted Lumen as naturally as Lumen had, had finally dawned on him.
His subordinates, Lumen, Van, and Lydon, were slowly growing on him. First as cards to see the end of the story, then as subordinates rather than tools, and now as valued comrades whose lives he would not have wasted. Their growing presence made Cadel suddenly fearful.
ââ¦â¦Itâs not true.â
He stood up quickly and washed his face dry. A confused look appeared through the cracks in his hands. Cadel, who kept muttering that it was not true without knowing what it was, got out of bed and started pacing around the room.
With a hesitant, trembling gaze, he reached for a small vial on the nightstand. It was a stamina recovery potion. It was a small gift from the Emperor to the Knight Order, who were constantly traveling, and it was said that one vial was enough to wipe away days of fatigue.
When Cadel first received that vial, he thought it would be a good opportunity to look into Lumenâs past. The whole time he was waiting for Lumen, he wondered what on earth Lumen was throwing away and what value there was in what he was giving up.
But now he was reluctant to look at his past. Every time he peeked into Vanâs past, he carried more of Van with him. Cadel cared for him more, and he wanted to treat him better.
That one became precious meant that the world one lived in also became precious. Cadel didnât want that. He was a man who was going to leave. There was nothing more foolish than a man who was leaving trying to put down roots in the place he was leaving.
âThis is crazy.â
Cadel ruffled his hair irritably. It wasnât really necessary to look into the past. In a normal relationship, you donât know someoneâs past unless they told you first. It was only his own greed that made him want to see Lumenâs past, and the burden of knowing was his own to bear.
If he didnât want his feelings to get heavy, he just didnât look to the past. It was a simple matter of accepting Lumenâs decision as was and gauging his sincerity as he saw fit. However. n/ô/vel/b//in dot c//om
ââ¦â¦How could that be?â
Cadel had lured Lumen into his arms. He has made Lumen walk a path he need not have traveled because Cadel coveted his power. He made Lumen give up things he didnât have to give up, and he made Lumen resign himself to things he could be greedy for.
And yet, to accept Lumenâs favorability and loyalty so naively, as if he didnât know any better, to deny Lumen his heart for fear that Lumen would become more important to him. Cadel couldnât do that.
Cadelâs eyes narrowed as if he were about to cry. At times like this, he cursed himself for not knowing better. Even though attacking head-on wasnât always the right thing to do, you didnât realize it until you had been hit once and broke completely.
âOkay, forget it. Iâll just look at it. Itâs going to be uncomfortable whether I see it or not, so letâs just be uncomfortable all at once.â
He thought long and hard, but his decision was quick. Cadel strode to the bed and threw himself down without hesitation. Fortunately, his tired body quickly slipped into unconsciousness.
[You have entered a state of unconsciousness.]
[There are stories you can watch.]

[Lumen Dominicâs Memories â Past Story (Favorability over 70)]
If he could, he would have gotten to the bottom of Lydonâs past in one fell swoop. Cadel felt his mindset turn combative, and he took in the flickering vision.
