Chapter 7: I Met An Asshole

The Blind Girl's SecretWords: 10156

I woke up to something licking my face. I peeked my eyes open and picked up my hand. My hand touched a furry head and I knew it was my German Shepherd. It felt like he was tilting his head at me. I groaned, "Racer... Go away."

Racer barked and I suddenly felt my comforter being pulled away from me. I quickly grabbed onto it to try to keep it over me. "Racer! Leave me alone!"

He continued trying to tug it away from me so I gave up and let it go. When he finally pulled it off the bed, I heard him sit next to the bed and barked.

I glared his way, "you are evil."

I swear I can feel him smirking at me.

I groaned as I forced myself to get up and get ready for school.

Knocks sounded at my door, "Ava!"

"I'm up!" I shouted in irritation. I can already feel that today was not going to be a good day.

My door opened and my uncle walked in. I pointed to where I can hear Racer breathing near my bed, "take that evil dog out of my room."

My uncle laughed, "did he wake you?"

I didn't bother answering his question. I just walked straight into my bathroom and got ready for school.

I walked into the kitchen with my laptop bag and binder in hand. I grabbed a granola bar on the island where it's usually placed and a bottle of water from the fridge. "I'm ready."

"You don't want to eat waffles?" Uncle Dave said.

I shook my head and headed straight to the elevator with him.

"So how was school yesterday?"

"I met an asshole," I scowled as I put on my ray bans.

He laughed, "sounds like a charming guy."

I rolled my eyes. Pfft... Charming my ass.

The car slowed down and I unbuckled my seatbelt, "don't be late."

"I can't pick you up so Miles will be picking you up."

Miles is a former military man. He's in his late twenties and I heard from Mary that he's a really gorgeous guy. He was honorably discharged after an incident that happened during that time he was deployed in Iraq. I don't know exactly what happened but it was none of my business. All that mattered was that he was trustworthy and not a criminal.

"Why? You got a meeting again?"

He sighed, "yes, I swear you'd think that these people didn't know how to do their job with how many times they have to call me in."

I laughed, "well, you wanted to be a business man so suck it up. Money isn't just gonna fall from the sky."

"Whatever, smartass, now get out of my car." He jokingly said.

I stuck my tongue out at him and got out. I can hear him laughing as he drove off. I rolled my eyes as I headed up to the entrance of the school.

I didn't need anything from my locker so I just went to Hailz and Kenzie's locker. I can hear them chattering about what they are going to wear at the party this coming Friday. It's a Wednesday so I know that they are planning to go shopping for a new outfit for the party.

I stopped next to them and they immediately shifted, pausing their conversation.

"Ava, you're coming to the party, right?" Hailee asked, excited.

I smiled, "yes, I am. You guys are going to the mall after school?"

"Yep, you wanna come?" Kenzie said, calmer than Hailz.

"I can't. I have things to do after school and I already got a dress."

"WHAT?!" they shrieked.

I laughed, "what?"

"How can you have an outfit already?!" Hailee demanded.

I shrugged, "well, the day that Candice invited me to the party, I told Mary about it and she surprised me with a short black strapless dress, or so she told me. I haven't got the chance to check it out."

I may not be able to see but like most blind people, they use their sense of touch to get the idea of how it looks like. I've felt enough material in my life to tell the difference between silk, lace and so on. Mary didn't want me to get ahold of it yet until the party. I'm not really worried about it because she knows what I like.

They groaned.

"I'm so jealous," Hailee whined.

"No shit, same here. You're so lucky to have her," Kenzie grumbled.

I chuckled, "oh did I forget to mention? She's also got a dress for you both."

They were silent for a moment when I suddenly felt someone's gaze on me. I didn't know who it was but I have a feeling of who it could be. I was so lost in my thoughts that I was caught by surprise when I was tackled onto the floor.

I groaned, "come on, guys! Is this what you will be doing every single day?"

I felt one of them sit up on my waist as the other got off my legs.

"If you keep doing things like that, then yes we will," Hailz voice said above me.

"Mhm," Kenzie hummed a little farther.

I pushed Hailee off me, "gosh woman, what do you eat?"

"A whole store," she quickly said, "we are not talking about my eating habits, why did you wait until now to tell us?"

I dusted myself off and leaned against the lockers while making sure my ray bans were not damaged, "it was just last night that she told me!"

Kenz scoffed, "there's a thing called a phone, you know?"

I rolled my eyes, "you want me to give your dresses to Racer?"

"NO!" They screamed.

I smirked, "then stop whining."

I moved from the locker and started walking towards my homeroom class. I swear I really don't know what's the use of me going to class when all they have to do is send me a copy of the notes in braille or send me a recording to my email. Seriously, it's a waste of my time.

I sat at a desk and lay my head to rest. I was so close to reaching cloud 9 when someone decided to bother me.

"Ava?"

I turned towards the deep, familiar voice. It sounded like Justin, the quarterback of the school. He's actually a cool guy if you got to know him but to most people, he's an arrogant, cocky asshole. "Yeah?"

"You going to Candice's party?"

I smiled, "yeah, I am."

"Cool..." He trailed off.

I laughed, "what do you want, Justin? You're making this weird. I know you didn't just come here to ask about the party so what is it?"

"Well, the boys made a bet that I wouldn't be able to convince you to come with me to the party so..."

"So you want me to go with you to shove it in their face?"

"When you say it like that, it makes me sound like a dick. You're one if my closest girl friends and I just- I wanted to- ugh! Forget it," he stumbled.

I chuckled, then sighed, "Justin, all you had to do was ask. At least you were honest about the reason why you were taking me. I don't mind going with you. You're not a perverted jerk to me so I would love to go with you."

"Awesome!"he said, excited. "So you want me to pick you up tomorrow at 8?"

"Make that 8:30, I have no idea how long those girls are going to take to get ready."

He snickered, "okay how about I get there at 8:45 and text you that I'm waiting in the lobby."

I thought about it, then nodded, "Yup, that sounds better."

"Alright, then I'll see you then."

I smiled, "okay."

I felt him move closer and felt him kiss my cheek. "Thanks, A. You're the best.

I reached over and softly patted his cheek as I grinned, "of course I am."

He snickered, "and modest too."

I laughed and waved him away when I heard the teacher enter the class.

"Okay, class. Please take your seats so I can take attendance."

After she was done, she started talking about the play Macbeth. She had one of the students, Kieran pass out the books. I heard he was one of the nerds that some of the jocks like to pick on. I was never around to witness but I know how much of an ass they can be.

I felt a book being placed in front of me and I opened it, feeling the bumps on the page. I smiled, knowing Ms. Ross went out of her way to get it. She is one of the few teachers who actually tries to get any person with a disability to feel comfortable in her class.

Suddenly I heard a thud and the class started laughing.

I turned my head slightly to the back to hear what's going on.

"What's wrong, Kieran? Did you forget how to walk?" Patrick, one of the jocks said mockingly. Patrick Micheals is one of the jocks who I hate the most. He picks on others who is not popular.

I heard Kieran get up and grab the few books that fell to the floor.

"Hey," Patrick said annoyed, "I'm talking to you, geek."

I sighed and called out, "well, Patrick Star, maybe he just doesn't want to waste his breath on an idiot who is too dumb to understand any words that will come out of his mouth."

"Shut it, blind girl," he said angrily.

I rolled my eyes, "blind girl? Seriously? That's the best you got? I bet Kieran can tell me a better insult that's worth listening to than your kindergarten teasing."

The chair scraped loudly on the floor as he stood up.

"Hey, man, just let it go."

Ryder POV

I watched Patrick as he glared at Ava as she just sat there like she was bored.

Liam, one of Patrick's friends held onto his left arm. "Hey man, just let it go."

Patrick shook him off as he stalked towards Ava. He leaned down to her level until his face was an inch apart from hers. "Listen here, little wanna be, you may think your tough but you're nothing but a sad, desperate, blind girl who lost her parents. I bet you're the one who killed them or maybe they killed themselves because they didn't want to be stuck with someone as ugly as you."

I got up to push him away from her but she just chuckled. They way she laughed sent chills down my spine. It was cold and scary. "Pat, don't talk to me about my family when your family isn't so perfect either. I heard some things about your family you don't want me to say in front of everyone now do you?"

He scoffed, "right, like what?"

Ava leaned her head to his ear and whispered something that I couldn't hear but whatever she said made his eyes widen and his face go pale. He moved himself back and stared at her.

"Patrick and Ava, what is going on?" The teacher said. Ms. Ross was busy looking through her desk to notice what just happened mere minutes ago.

Ava turned her way and smiled sweetly, "nothing, Patrick was just asking about the play, right Pat?"

He nodded, rapidly and walked back to his desk and sat down. He didn't say anything else the rest of the day, even when Kieran collected the books back from the students towards the end of class. He just stayed quiet except to snap at his friends when they started picking on the loner girl in front of them. I wonder what she knows about him that he doesn't want anyone else to know.
