Ch3: You Can't Run From Your Past...

Why is my stepfather standing in front of me?

What does he want?

Whatever it is he's not getting it.

"I didn't come to fight," my stepfather says "I want to talk to you."

"Leave," I glare at him "I have nothing to talk to you about."

"Sweetheart," he smiles, but I cut him off.

"That's not my name," I say coldly " Stephan I'm not sure what it is you want and I don't care. I want you out of my life. I made that clear."

"You did," he frowns "but I thought that with time you could forgive me."

"Forgive you?" I laugh bitterly "Never. You destroyed everything. I can never forgive you for what you did. I hate you so much and no matter how much time goes by I will always hate you."

"Your father," he answers avoiding my glare "is not the man you-"

"Shut up," I exclaim "you will not come and talk about my father! He was a great man unlike you! You b-"

"What's going on?" Elliot asks throwing my apartment door open.

I feel like turning around and telling him to get back inside. This isn't  any of his business, but he looks genuinely concerned.

"Nothing," I say keeping my cool "this man is leaving."

"Look," Stephan runs his hands through his hair "you can't run from your past. It will catch up to you eventually."

I see Elliot giving me a confused look, and I want to tell him to leave us alone to talk.

What if Stephan says something?

I can't afford Elliot knowing anything.

"I guess well have to see," I say "now either you leave or I will call security and have them kick you out."

"No need," Elliot crosses his arm over his chest "I can kick him out personally."

I would tell Elliot to be quiet, but we don't have security in the building. The best I can do is Jason and he couldn't kill a fly even if he tried.

He's my best option.

"You heard him," I smirk.

Stephan sends Elliot a nasty glare before turning around and leaving. As soon as he's out of sight I feel like throwing up.

I hate him.

"Why was Stephan Ryder here?" Elliot asks.

"I'm not sure," I say truthfully "and I don't care."

"Did he tell you what he wanted?"

"To talk" I say.

"About?"

I'm not sure why I'm answering his questions this is none of his business. If I give him information then later all he will need to do is assemble the puzzle pieces. I can never let that happen.

"None of your business" I answer creating the brick wall I have built around myself and my secrets. I need to protect them.

"I'm going to work," I take a deep breath pushing my thoughts aside.

"I'll come with" he closes the apartment room.

"No" I say opening the door.

"Why not?" he closes the door.

"I don't like you" I open the door.

"You don't know me," he closes the door.

He has a point.

"Fine," I lock the door "but you do anything that can cause trouble and you're sleeping on the floor in the kitchen, understand?"

"Understood" he nods.

"I'm here" I run into the coffee shop causing a few people to stare at me.

"You're thirty minutes late," David, my manager, glares at me "why?"

"Personal reasons," I explain "I'm sorry."

"I don't want you being late again," he scowls.

"I won't," I nodd while walking into the employees room. It's s a room with gray walls, a couch, some chairs, a TV, and a soda machine. All the employees like hanging out in this room during their breaks.

"Finally made it" Lisa smiles as soon as I walk into the room. I met her three years ago. She's the person who helped me get this job and find my apartment.

Lisa is a short, skinny, bold red head, with light brown eyes and a personality that just happens to make you always want to be around her.

"I'm late I get it," I answer while grabbing my bright red apron and name tag.

"What happened?" she asks.

"Things," I say before walking out of the room.

I'm on register duty today which means I get to deal with people.

My least favorite part of my job.

Taking a deep breath I plaster a huge fake smile on my face and stand behind the register. I immediately spot Elliot sitting in the back corner of the restaurant leaning back on a chair as he looks out the window.

Why does he look so good?

"Who's that?" Lisa asks leaning on the counter next to me "David said he walked in with you."

"Elliot Stone," I answer knowing exactly what will come next.

"The Elliot Stone?" she asks "as in the son of Kyle Stone and Melissa Stone owners of one of the most important company in the country?"

"The very one," I nod.

"How do you know him?" she asks checking him out.

"I don't," I replie deciding that it's most beneficially honest answer "I just met him."

"You're kidding," she exclaims "how did you meet him?"

"You ask too many questions," I say as a customer approaches the counter. Smiling at him I take his order and I notice Elliot walking towards Lisa.

Does he think she's cute?

I walk towards the coffee machine pretending to be uninterested in their conversation, but I try listening to what they're saying.

"Is Lydia your friend?" Elliot asks a charming billion dollar smile on "I mean good friend?"

"Yeah," Lisa blushes "she's like my best friend."

Best friend?

I don't do the whole best friend thing, but I guess if I had to choose it would be Lisa.

"Great," he says "can I ask you a question?"

"Anything," Lisa fixes her hair.

Elliot really can charm anything with legs and skirt.

"Is she always distant and cold towards people?" he asks.

"Yes," Lisa says after thinking about it "she is. I use to think she was rude, but she's like that. Cold and distant."

"Do you know why?"

"Nope," she shakes her head "she never talks about her life. In fact your lucky if she ever tells you anything about herself."

"What's her full name?" he asks giving me a side ways glance, but I pretend to be making coffee.

"I have no idea," Lisa laughs "I'm a horrible best friend."

Why is Elliot asking Lisa these questions?

"How did you two meet?" Lisa asks, and I pray that Elliot won't  say anything.

"Here's your coffee," I smile at the man while grabbing the money heys handing me.

"We haven't," Elliot says before walking towards me.

"I'm Elliot Stone," he extends his hand for me to shake "and I'm more than just the son of Kyle Stone and Melissa Stone. That's a horrible description of who I am."

"What are you doing?" I ask confused.

What game is he playing?

"Introducing myself," he smirks "now tell me, who are you?"

Do you really think you intimidate me Stone?

"I'm Lydia," I smirk shaking his hand "I work in a coffee shop and live in a crappy apartment. Nice to meet you."

He's not playing me at my game.

"Fine," he nodds leaning towards me and whispering "don't tell me, but be sure of this Lydia. I will find out what you're hiding."
