Miranda must have slept through the night, because when she awoke again it was daylight outside, and the doctor was checking her vitals. Chief Stratton walked in soon after. Cole was gone. He obviously had work.
"I see no reason to keep you," the doctor told her. "But take it easy for a few days, and if your head hurts I am giving you a prescription." He handed her a bottle and then some papers.
He then turned to the Chief. "Make sure she rests," he told him, then walked out.
"Yes, rest is good," the Chief agreed.
Miranda said, "Whatever," and grinned. She then sat up and swung her legs off the bed. "If you will excuse me Chief, I need to get dressed. You didn't happen to bring me clean clothes did you?" she asked hopefully.
He grinned. "Tyler brought you some while you were sleeping last night."
"Thank goodness. I don't want to walk out of here looking like I was still wounded."
"You are still wounded," he pointed out.
"Yes, but at least my clothes will be clean."
He only smiled at her as she gingerly made her way to the bathroom with the clean jeans and shirt from the small wardrobe in the room. The Chief sat in a chair and waited for her.
When she was through she walked out and slipped her shoes on.
"I will take you back to your place," he told her.
"No, that would look too suspicious. Just call me a cab, I would rather not have Tyrone wondering why I am hanging around cops."
"You are right of course," he gave in and pulling out his cell phone called a cab for her.
After he hung up he looked at her. "You aren't going to Chad's funeral today are you?"
"I can't. I doubt my head could handle the pressure of the airplane, and I am in no shape to drive."
"Good girl, I was going to stop you if you tried."
"I am sure you would."
She then headed to the door with her belongings and the Chief followed. They parted at the door. "Take care Mandy, I will see you in a few days if not sooner," he told her, then headed in the opposite direction.
Miranda only had to wait a few moments more before the taxi pulled up. She got in and told the driver where to take her.
When he dropped her off at the hotel, Miranda went to her room, kicked off her shoes, and snuggled into bed, falling asleep.
She didn't wake up until she heard insistent pounding on her door. Groggily she got up and wandered to open the door. Tyler stood grinning down at her. "Thought you would never answer," he said as he walked in.
"Tyler, can't you leave me alone? I have a really bad headache," she mumbled.
"Sorry," he apologized, "I just wanted to make sure you were okay."
"What do you want exactly?"
"Just wondering who pushed you out of the car?"
"Some guy named Trent."
"Who was driving?"
"A guy named Alex."
Tyler frowned, a stricken look on his face, but it passed quickly.
"What is it Tyler?" Miranda asked, seeing his face.
"I was just getting angry. I wish I could get my hands on both of them."
"I am sure you would, but as I said I asked to be pushed. It's not their fault."
"It is though," he frowned.
"What else did you need?" she asked him, sitting on her couch. She was still exhausted.
"I need to know what time that drug deal is going down this weekend."
"I don't know where or what time. I will make sure I wear my earrings so as soon as I find out you can gather the troops."
"Yes, give us at least a few hours notice."
"I will, and thanks Tyler, for being here for this whole mess."
"Hey what are partners for?" he grinned, leaned down and hugged her then excusing himself he went to his room next door.
Miranda sighed. Saturday was going to be a rough day, she just hoped she would make it out alive.
Miranda decided then that she was hungry so she headed to the phone to place an order. But a knock sounded on her door. Thinking it was Tyler again, she went to open it, but it wasn't him. Her face lit up when she saw that it was Cole.
"Hey, I thought it was my treat for dinner, so I brought some," he smiled.
"You read my mind," she told him, "I was just going to call for dinner."
She let him in and he set the food on the table, then pulled her into his arms.
"Hmm, I think I could handle having you for dinner instead," she told him.
"Don't tempt me," he grinned at her, then kissed her softly.
"I have a question for you," he said, as he pulled out her seat for her.
"Okay."
"Are Tyler and Chad really your cousins?"
"No, but they pretend to be so no one gets suspicious."
"You don't have feelings for Tyler, do you?" Cole asked, frowning.
"No, of course not Cole. Why, are you jealous that he is working with me?"
"Maybe," he said, kissing her.
She smiled against his lips. "Don't worry about it, I'm all yours."
"Good to know," he said, then pulled back to get out plates for them to eat on.
"This looks wonderful Cole, did you cook?" she asked him.
"Oh no. I don't cook this well," he grinned as he put a steak on her plate.
He then put some vegetables on her plate and a roll.
"So are you off for the rest of the day?" she asked him as they ate.
"Yes, I had to work really early this morning or I would have brought you home from the hospital."
"I understand. You can't set everything aside for a girl," she smiled.
"I would like too," he admitted.
"I am glad you don't Cole, I would feel bad."
"Don't. You know I care for you."
"And I care for you," she told him, but she was looking worried.
"What is going through your beautiful mind," Cole asked, kissing her cheek.
"I was just thinking about this weekend. I just hope I can pull this whole thing off."
"I hope so too. I don't want you dead," he frowned. "Promise me you will wear a vest, and carry your gun?"
"Of course I will."
"We'll be there with backup, the department and the FBI."
"I figured as much."
"I wish you didn't have to do this," he said, pulling her to sit on his lap. "I worry about you."
"I worry about me," she replied, making him chuckle.
She yawned then. "You still need some rest," he said, picking her up into his arms and carrying her into her room. He laid her onto her bed and covered her up, then leaned down and kissed her softly.
"Get some rest, I'll see you in the morning," he promised.
"Thanks, Cole," she whispered.
"Anytime love," he replied, then closed the door behind him. He headed to clean up the dishes, and after making sure the lights were off, he left, hoping that Miranda would be safe for the night. He was worried about her. She had gone through a lot in the last few days. He knew one thing for sure, he would be glad when the whole mess over, then he could pursue a more serious relationship with Miranda if she would have him.
He knocked on Tyler's door. Tyler answered and said, "Cole."
"Hey, will you keep an eye on Miranda? She's sleeping right now, but she didn't look good."
"I will," Tyler assured him.
"Thanks, man."
"Anything for her," Tyler nodded. "You'll be by tomorrow?"
"I will be."
"Good, then we can discuss our strategy for Saturday."
Cole nodded and headed to the elevator, Tyler watching him go. "He is in so deep," he chuckled, then closed his door, hitting the sack himself.
