Chapter 16

"A large stick."

Rochelle Quinn's POV:

Alec's contorted body lay before me, while the devil whispered in my ear like a snake. Sneaky and slyly. My eyes watered. The monster kept hitting him, again and again. There was no escape.

But I ran and I ran, until my legs were aching and my breathing forced.

He's going to die.

He's going to die.

A hand touched my shoulder, the devil moving his face closer to mine. "You'll never escape me Rochelle. Stop trying."

"Rocky?!" I flinched back as the devil grabbed me again, pulling me closer towards him.

"Rocky, wake up."

I gasped, flying upwards and head butting something, or more likely someone, on the way up.

I clenched my eyes shut and wrapped my arms around my body, trying to steady my accelerating breathing.

Breathe in for four seconds. Hold for five. Release for six.

And again.

I practised the grounding method for a while, until I could breathe normally again. I looked at the strange figure lurking in my bedroom, holding their head.

I grabbed the bat from under my bed, getting ready to attack the unknown person.

"You have 10 seconds to tell me who the fuck you are and why you're in my room before I start swinging." I threatened, clutching it tightly in my hand.

"Well I can't ignore Kace anymore. You have a mean head butt." The voice muttered, chuckling painfully.

"Fuck, Kenzie." I released the bat and put my head in my hands. "What the hell are you doing in my room?" I questioned shakily, taking a deep breath.

"I heard you screaming." My eyes focused on him, despite being surrounded by darkness. He looked exhausted, like he'd been trying to stay up.

And the sour stench of coffee evaded his normal, calming aroma.

"Well I'm okay, thanks for the help. Goodbye." I tried to usher him out of my room but he wouldn't budge.

"I'm not leaving until I'm certain you're okay." He replied stiffly, standing his ground and crossing his arms.

I hid a groan, "I'm fine, Kenzie. I promise you."

"I'm not going to sleep so I might as well stay here." He bargained. I rose my eyebrows at him.

"Why aren't you going to sleep?"

"Don't want to." His answer was vague but I could sense a hidden meaning.

He was sick of the nightmares.

I can't be dealing with this when it's so early in the morning.

"What then? So you want me to stay with you and keep the big, bad monsters away?" It came out as a joke. He didn't reply.

"Wait?" I paused, "You want me to stay with you?"

"Google said that staying with someone can keep them away, especially if nothing they do affects you." He mumbled, sounding a bit embarrassed.

I rubbed the back of my neck, debating the option.

On one side, I could get a decent nights sleep without him. I just have to take my pills. On the other, I can stay with him and have a decent nights sleep without being awoken by any more screaming.

And I needed to get him on side.

Mrs and Mr Jensen are due back in a couple of weeks and if they find out what's been happening then they might kick me out.

I'm not prepared to leave this place yet, even though I have to put up with the brothers.

So I had to decide.

Which would benefit me more? Staying on my own perfectly fine? Or staying with Kenzie, still perfectly fine, and possibly getting him on side?

"Your bed or mine?"

He sent me a small grin, looking thankful. "Yours."

I replied with a swift nod of my head, gesturing for him to get under the covers. I stood up and  walked to my dresser, taking off my sweat-filled shirt.

I heard Kenzie suck in a breath as he openly started at my naked back. I put on an oversized Metallica top and climbed into bed with him, taking in account that he hasn't removed any clothing. I found that awfully strange seen as every boy I knew normally removed at least 1 piece of clothing for bed.

I put it down to him being a vampire lover.

"Stay on your side of the bed. Don't touch me, don't come near me and don't even look at me." I instructed, closing my fists against the cover.

I slipped in and out of a drowsy state for what seemed like years.

I fell asleep with a pair of arms wrapping themselves around my waist.

*.*.*.*

It's safe to say that I wasn't expecting to wake up with a boy in my bed.

Nevertheless, I woke up with a boys head rested in the crook of my neck, an arm wrapped tightly around my waist and a large stick digging into my leg.

The large stick being made of skin, and fully elongated.

It looked like the goth had experienced a little problem in the night.

"Kenz." I tried to shake him awake, "Dracula wake up."

He groaned, "Not now, Rae. One more minute."

"You need to fix little junior." I whispered desperately, making him jump up in shock.

"Shit." His hand instantly covered his private area, his face flushed a dark red.

"Rock, I'm so sor-"

I waved him off, "It's fine. Just don't let the boys find out."

"I should leave." He gestured to the door sheepishly, taking a step back. And another, and another, until he reached the door. He sent me another embarrassing look before leaving.

I huffed tiredly, falling back on the bed. My mind swept through all the events that have unfolded over the past few weeks. I had a new foster family, five new fosters brothers, stopped a kid from being harmed, been to a street fight, been in many fights myself and reunited with the four people that used to mean everything to me.

It's fucking crazy.

I can't lose it all again.

I really need to try this time.

I unwillingly dragged myself out of bed, going down stairs.

Kane stood in the kitchen, the mouthwatering smell of bacon drifted into my nostrils and relaxed me instantly.

"Bring me the coffee." I instructed lazily, throwing myself down onto the chair next to the infamous goth. His face instantly blushed red at my arrival. I smirked to myself as Blondie handed me a cup of coffee, I mumbled a quick thanks.

"So what are we doing today then?" I asked, signing contentfully when the hot liquid hit the back of my throat.

Kane leaned against the kitchen counter, his jaw twitched. "You've been here for barely two weeks and you've already missed most of your lessons."

I shrugged, "Priorities."

"No more missing school. You need to sort your grades out or Mom will make you get a tutor." Kace added, grabbing

"I need to sort my grades out?" I raised my eyebrows, taking another slow sip of my coffee. " I've got a 4.6 GPA and I finished everything I needed to do when I was in Juvie. The only reason they're still making me go to school is because 'criminals do bad things if they're not entertained'. So I don't think I need a tutor, thank you very much."

"Wow, no need to show off. Some of us are struggling here." Keegan rolled his eyes jokingly at me. I took a quick bow, making my shorts slide up a little bit.

Oops.

"Oh, damn girl." Kade whistled. I laughed a little but slapped him on the side of his head.

"I'm not a dog, don't treat me like one." I smiled sweetly, tying my hair up into a ponytail. I grabbed a piece of bacon off Kane's plate, giggling when he complained at the action.

"Fine." Kade rolled his eyes but I could see the amusement lay in his eyes. I smirked, biting my lip.

"Keegs?" I held an apple behind my back, grinning at him. "Heads up, bitch." I threw it at him. The apple bounced off his head and left a dark red mark in its place. I bit my lip harder to stop me from laughing.

"Why have you got such an obsession with apples?" He moaned, holding his head.

"An apple a day keep the doctor away. motherfucker." I sent him a bored look, I grabbed a water bottle and left the room.

"Get ready, Cinderella, we're going to a ball." I shouted, beaming as I heard him groan at my words.
