Ananya
The morning sunlight filtered gently through the gaps in the curtains, casting a soft glow across the room. As I stirred, slowly opening my eyes, I realized it was already morning. I should get up. But then my gaze landed on the strikingly handsome man lying beside me, holding me securely in his firm arms.
Arjun.
The memories of our date night flooded back, vivid and electrifying. The taste of his lips on mine, the way he kissed me and touched meâjust the thought of it sent a warm ache through my core. I needed to get up now because the longer I stared at him, the more I wanted him in ways I probably shouldnât.
I carefully shifted, trying not to wake him. But as I sat up, my blouse slipped open, the single string holding it together still trapped beneath Arjunâs strong arm. Heat rose to my cheeks as I realized how exposed I was. We hadnât changed before falling asleep last night, and my saree blouseâsecured by just one stringâwas now barely covering me.
Before I could free the string from under his arm, Arjun stirred and opened his eyes.
âGood morning, Firefly,â he murmured, his voice deep and husky from sleep.
Startled, I clutched the blanket to my chest, pulling it tightly around me in an attempt to cover my near-nakedness.
âWhatâs wrong, Firefly?â he asked, his tone laced with both concern and amusement as his intense gaze settled on me.
I struggled to find my voice, my cheeks burning under his intense gaze. âA-actually,â I stammered, clutching the blanket tighter around me, feeling my face grow hotter with every passing second.
Arjun frowned, concern flickering in his dark eyes. âWhat happened, Firefly? Are you hurt or something?â
Before his worry could escalate, I quickly shook my head. âNo, no, itâs not that,â I blurted out. âItâs justâ¦the string of my blouse isâ¦under your arm.â My voice trailed off as the words left my lips, my embarrassment reaching new heights. I didnât need to spell it out further; the realization dawned on him, his expression softening with understanding.
âOh,â he said simply, sitting up to free the string from under his arm.
Once he did, he looked at me with a soft smile and said, âTurn around, Firefly.â
I blinked at him in surprise, my heart pounding in my chest. I was sure I looked as red as a tomato. âWhat?â
âLet me tie your blouse string,â he offered, his voice calm but laced with a tenderness that made my resolve waver.
Before I could protest, he reached out, gently brushing a stray strand of hair away from my face. His touch was light, but it sent a shiver down my spine.
âRelax, Firefly. Iâm not going to do anything youâre not ready for,â he said softly, pulling back just enough to meet my gaze again.
His reassurance melted the tension in my shoulders. Taking a deep breath, I nodded and turned around, still holding the blanket to my chest.
Arjunâs fingers worked slowly, deliberately, as he tied the string of my blouse. His touch, though brief and innocent, felt like electricity on my skin. I could feel the heat of his breath against my back as he leaned closer, his movements unhurried.
Once he tied the knot, his hands lingered for a moment, his fingers lightly brushing against my shoulders. Then, before I could say anything, he pressed a soft, lingering kiss at the junction of my neck and shoulder, sending a jolt of warmth through my entire body.
Pulling me back into his embrace, he positioned me so my back was resting against his firm chest. His arms wrapped around me securely, and I felt the steady rhythm of his heartbeat against my own.
âYouâre beautiful, Firefly,â he whispered against my ear, his voice a mix of affection and adoration.
My breath hitched at his words, and I found myself melting further into his hold. For a moment, all the awkwardness and hesitation faded, replaced by the comforting warmth of his embrace and the undeniable connection between us.
â¡â¡
We had returned to our apartment earlier today after our two day staying at my in-laws home. Now, I was at my desk working while Arjun attended a meeting that was scheduled outside.
âAttention, everyone. Meet our senior, Kunal Bhatia. Heâll be supervising us until our new project is completed,â Devâs voice snapped me out of my thoughts.
âHello, everyone. Iâm Kunal Bhatia, but just call me KunalâIâm not that old,â he said with a laugh as he introduced himself.
The team exchanged polite greetings, and when it was my turn, I stood up, extending my hand. âIâm Ananya. Ananya Kapoor,â I introduced myself.
âHi, nice to meet you,â he replied, but his handshake lingered longer than necessary. I didnât like the way he looked at me, though I told myself I might be imagining it. Whatever it was, it made me uneasy.
We got back to work, following the instructions Kunal laid out for us. However, I couldnât shake the uncomfortable feeling that grew stronger throughout the day. He had a habit of leaning over my desk whenever I asked a question or when he checked on my progress, his proximity far too close for comfort. I found myself inching away each time, trying to create some space.
I didnât want to mess up this project, especially knowing how important it was to Aurum Dynamics. I decided to talk to Arjun about it once I got home.
I arrived at the apartment around 8 PM, only to find that Arjun wasnât back yet. He had sent me a text saying his meeting would run late. After freshening up and changing into my comfortable clothes, I prepared dinner, though my mind remained clouded with unease about Kunal.
When Arjun finally came home, he greeted me with a soft kiss on my temple and wrapped me in his arms.
âI missed you, Firefly,â he murmured.
âI missed you too,â I replied, hugging him tighter than usual. I had missed him, but more than that, his presence brought a sense of security I desperately needed. Only Arjun could wash away the discomfort I felt.
âGo freshen up. Dinnerâs ready,â I told him, and he obliged.
By the time we finished eating, Arjun was doing the dishesâsomething he never let me do. I stood beside him, debating how to bring up the topic.
âArjunâ¦â I began hesitantly. âToday, our senior, Kunal Bhatia, joined us.â
âOh, yes! Kunal is the best in the business,â Arjun said, glancing at me. âI personally asked him to join the project because itâs crucial for Aurum Dynamics. Iâm confident heâll handle everything perfectly.â He smiled. âSo, how was your first day working with him?â
I forced a smile, swallowing the words I wanted to say. âGood. Heâs⦠really good at his work.â
Arjun grinned, satisfied with my answer, but my thoughts were far from settled. I couldnât bring myself to tell him about how Kunal made me feel. How could I, when Arjun had gone out of his way to bring him on board for the project?
I decided Iâd keep my distance from Kunal as much as possible. I could manage that, right? This project wouldnât last forever, and I could avoid being near him.
It would be fine. I would be fine. Nothing was going to happen. Nothing.
Or so I told myself.
â¡â¡
Itâs been almost a week since our team started working with Kunal Bhatia, and the truth is, Iâm still uncomfortable around him. Initially, he only approached me for work-related matters, but recently, his behavior has crossed the line. Heâs been unnecessarily close, finding excuses to linger near me, and Iâm sick of it.
I made my way to the coffee counter, hoping a cup of coffee would clear my head. As I was pouring myself a cup, a familiar voice interrupted.
âHey, Anu baby. What are you up to?â Kunalâs tone was casual, but I knew better.
âAnanya. You should call me Ananya,â I replied politely, though the way he addressed me made my skin crawl.
Arjun had been away from the office most of the week, busy with meetings for new client acquisitions. That absence only seemed to embolden Kunal.
âOh, come on, baby. Itâs not a big deal,â he said with an infuriating grin. Before I could respond, I felt his arms snake around my waist.
I immediately pushed him off, my voice sharp but hushed, careful not to attract attention. âWhat are you doing?â
âDonât act like you donât like it,â he said, his voice laced with arrogance as he stepped closer. âI know you want this too.â
I froze for a moment, my body stiff with shock, before quickly composing myself. I couldnât let him see even a hint of weakness.
My heart pounded, not with fear but with sheer anger. I won't let myself be scared. âDonât you dare touch me again,â I warned, my tone firm. âIf you do, Iâll file a complaint against you.â
He reached out again, undeterred by my words, but I stood my ground. âIâm serious. Leave. Now.â
His lips curled into a smirk, like he saw my resistance as a challenge. With a shrug, he walked away, leaving me trembling with frustration and disgust.
I let out a shaky breath, trying to regain composure. My hands were clenched so tightly around the coffee cup that my knuckles turned white. Why does this always happen to me? Why canât I just live in peace?
As I stared into my coffee, lost in thought, I felt a pair of arms wrap around my waist. Panic surged through me, and I spun around, shoving the person away with all my strength.
âDonât you dare touch me again!â I hissed.
âFireflyâ¦â
The familiar voice snapped me out of my panic. I looked up to see Arjun, his face a mix of concern and confusion. Relief washed over me, and without thinking, I threw my arms around him.
âFirefly, what happened? Tell me,â he urged, his voice filled with panic and worry. âWhy did you do that?â
I pulled away, forcing a smile even though my insides were churning. I couldnât tell him about Kunalânot when Arjun had worked so hard to bring him onto the project. I didnât want to jeopardize something so important.
âIâm totally fine,â I lied, hoping to convince him.
Arjun studied my face, clearly unconvinced, but I didnât give him a chance to press further.
âGo back to your office, Mr. CEO,â I said, switching to a mischievous tone to distract him. âWhat will people say if they see us here like this?â
Before he could respond, I walked away from the coffee counter, leaving him standing there with worry etched on his face.
But even as I put distance between us, the weight of Kunalâs actions lingered, and I knew this wasnât the end of it.
Itâs almost 10 PM. I had told Arjun to go home earlier because I still had some work to finish. The office was nearly empty nowâjust Isha and me.
âBye, Ananya. Iâm heading out. You should go home too; itâs getting really late,â Isha said as she grabbed her bag.
A minute later, she left. She had insisted on staying until I was done, but I reassured her it wasnât necessary since Iâd be leaving soon as well.
I packed up my things and turned to leave when I suddenly froze.
Kunal.
He was standing there, blocking the exit. My heart skipped a beat. I had seen him leave earlierâwhy was he back now? And why, of all times, when the office was completely empty?
Panic began to creep through me, cold and relentless. Something about this didnât feel right.
Arjun
It was well past 10 PM, and Ananya still hadnât left the office. I knew because, yes, I was waiting outside. She always insisted that we shouldnât travel to work or return home together, but I didnât care. I would never leave until I knew she was safe.
She didnât know I followed her on her way home every day. It wasnât about mistrust; it was about protecting the one person who meant everything to me.
Today, something felt off. She had been acting strange all day, especially after I hugged her from behind at the coffee counter. I saw it in her eyesâfear. Even though she didnât say a word, I knew something was wrong.
I had been waiting for over an hour now. Isha had left 15 minutes ago, but Ananya still hadnât come down. My worry grew when I noticed Kunal walking back into the office building.
Why was he here at this hour?
Minutes passed, but Ananya still didnât appear. Fuck I couldnât wait any longer. Sheâd been overworking herself lately, and I knew sheâd make herself sick if this continued.
Frustrated and uneasy, I stormed into the building and made my way up to her floor. But when I got there, it was eerily quiet.
No sign of Ananya.
Then I heard itâa sharp, shattering sound. Glass breaking. My heart stopped.
I followed the sound, sprinting toward the source. When I reached the break room, the sight before me made my blood boil.
Kunal was forcing himself on her. Ananya was struggling, trying to push him away, her voice trembling as she screamed, âLeave me!â
That was it.
I grabbed Kunal by the back of his collar and yanked him off her with such force that he stumbled and nearly fell. âHow dare you touch her?â I growled, my voice raw with rage.
Before he could react, I landed a hard punch square on his jaw. His head snapped back, and he staggered, but I wasnât done.
âShe wanted it,â he spat, a twisted smirk on his face.
Those words ignited something feral in me. My fist connected with his face again, harder this time. âShut your filthy mouth!â I roared, grabbing him by the collar and slamming him against the wall.
âArjun! Iâm your project leader! You canât do this! Iâll leave your project!â he tried to threaten me, but his voice shook.
âYouâre fired,â I said coldly, my tone laced with venom. Then I kneed him in the stomach, and he doubled over, gasping for air.
I wasnât done. I grabbed him by the hair, dragging him to the counter, and smashed his head against it. He let out a groan before collapsing to the floor, unconscious.
Breathing heavily, I turned to Ananya.
She was on the ground, curled into herself, trembling uncontrollably. Her hands were clamped over her ears, and she was rocking slightly, whispering over and over, âIâm fine. Iâm fine.â
But she wasnât fine.
Her breaths were shallow and uneven, and her face was pale. Shit. She was having a panic attack.
I dropped to my knees in front of her. âFireflyâ¦â I said softly, my voice trembling. I reached out and gently took her hands away from her ears. âLook at me, Firefly. Itâs me. Itâs Arjun. Please, baby, look at me.â
She didnât respond, her eyes vacant and unfocused.
âAnanya!â I called her name, louder this time, shaking her shoulders lightly. Finally, her gaze shifted, and she seemed to register my presence.
âArjunâ¦â she whispered, her voice so fragile it broke something deep inside me. âIâm fine,â she added, forcing the words out like they would somehow convince herself.
But those two words shattered me. My chest tightened painfully, and I felt my throat close up. âFirefly,â I whispered, my voice breaking. âStop it, baby. Stop pretending. Look into my eyes.â
She finally did. And in that moment, the dam broke.
âArjunâ¦â her voice cracked, and before I could say anything, she threw herself into my arms, clutching onto me like I was her lifeline. Her body shook with sobs, each one tearing into me like a knife.
Thankfully, she wasnât having a panic attack anymore. Her breathing had steadied, though her body still trembled slightly in my arms. The worst of it seemed to have passed, but the fear and anguish lingering in her eyes told me she wasnât okayânot yet.
âA-Ar⦠Arjunâ¦â she stammered between cries, her voice broken and desperate.
I held her trembling body as her sobs grew louder, her breathing uneven and shallow. She clung to me like her life depended on it, her nails digging into my back.
âA-Arjun⦠I⦠I canât⦠I c-canâtâ¦â Her voice cracked as she struggled to form words.
I held her tighter, wrapping my arms around her as though I could shield her from the world. âShh⦠Itâs okay, Firefly. Iâm here now. No one can hurt you. No one will ever hurt you again.â
âI tried⦠I tried to stop him,â she sobbed, her words barely audible. âI said no⦠I told him to leave⦠But he didnât listen. Why didnât he listen?â
Her voice rose in panic as she spoke, and she started trembling even more. âIâm not strong enough, Arjun. I thought I was, but⦠but Iâm not. Iâm notâ¦â
âYouâre stronger than you know,â I said, cupping her face gently to make her look at me. âYou fought back, Firefly. You fought him. Thatâs strength.â
She shook her head again, her hands covering her ears. âI donât feel strong. I feel⦠broken. I canât⦠I just canât⦠I want it to stop. Please, make it stop, Arjun. Make it stopâ¦â
Hearing her like this was killing me. I pulled her closer, resting my chin on her head. âIâll make it stop, Firefly. Iâll make sure no one ever lays a finger on you again. I promise you, no one will hurt you ever again.â
She buried her face in my chest, her tears soaking through my shirt. I could feel her fingers gripping me with all the strength she had left.
Her tears started falling harder as her body trembled violently in my arms. âIâm scared of everything⦠of him⦠of myself⦠of everything.â
âYou donât have to do this alone,â I said softly, stroking her hair. âIâm here. Iâll always be here. You can lean on me, Firefly. You donât have to be afraid anymore.â
She buried her face deeper into my chest, her voice muffled but filled with raw pain. âI just want it to stop, Arjun. I want to feel normal again. I want to feel safeâ¦â
I pressed my lips to the top of her head, whispering softly, âIâve got you, baby. Youâre safe now. I swear, Iâll never let anything happen to you again.â
She let out another broken sob, clinging to me with everything she had. âArjun.... Please.....please...donât ever leave me.â
âNever,â I whispered, my voice shaking. âIâm never leaving you, Firefly. Not now, not ever.â
Her cries eventually softened, but she didnât let go, and I didnât ask her to.
For now, she needed me to hold her. And I would, for as long as she needed. She stayed in my arms, clinging to me like I was her anchor in a storm, and I held her, vowing to protect her with everything I had.
As Ananyaâs sobs softened, I gently picked her up in a bridal style. She didnât resist, silently burying her face in my chest, her trembling fingers clutching my shirt as if letting go would make her world fall apart. It tore at my heart to know how much she was holding inside, how many storms she must have weathered alone without ever asking for help.
I carried her down to the car, opened the passenger door, and placed her carefully on the seat. After fastening the seatbelt around her, I was about to close the door when her hand shot out, gripping mine tightly.
âIâm not going anywhere, Firefly,â I reassured her, leaning in to press a kiss to her temple. Only then did she release my hand.
Sliding into the driverâs seat, I started the car and began the drive home. The silence between us was heavy but not uncomfortable. I kept my hand in hers the entire way, grounding her, letting her know I was there. She didnât lift her head once, her gaze fixed on the space between us.
When we reached home, I turned off the engine and stepped out, walking around to her side. I opened the door, scooped her up again, and carried her inside. She didnât protest, just nestled closer to me as if I was her anchor in a sea of chaos.
I set her gently on our bed, brushing a strand of hair from her face. âLet me get some warm water ready for you. A bath will help you relax,â I said softly.
She didnât respond, but her tired eyes followed me as I moved around the room, gathering everything sheâd need. Once the bath was ready, I returned to her. Taking her hand, I helped her up and guided her to the bathroom.
âGo ahead, Firefly,â I said gently, starting to turn away to give her privacy.
But her hand tightened around mine. Her voice was barely above a whisper, fragile yet pleading. âD-donât leave meâ¦â
I froze, the weight of her words sinking into me. She needed me, more than ever.
âIâm not going anywhere,â I promised, turning back to her.
She nodded, her gaze dropping as she slowly undressed and stepped into the tub. The sound of water filled the room as she sank into the warmth. I took a seat on the edge of the tub near her head and reached for the shampoo.
âClose your eyes,â I murmured.
As I worked the shampoo into her hair, I gave her a gentle scalp massage, my fingers moving slowly and deliberately. I could feel the tension melting away from her shoulders, her breathing evening out little by little.
After rinsing her hair and helping her finish her bath, I wrapped her in a soft towel and lifted her onto the bathroom counter. She sat there quietly, her damp hair sticking to her face, her eyes still clouded but calmer than before.
âLetâs get you comfortable,â I said, retrieving her favorite sweatpants and a loose T-shirt. I helped her get dressed, careful to respect her space while still being there for her. Once she was ready, I picked her up again and carried her back to the bedroom.
Placing her gently on the bed, I grabbed the hairdryer. Sitting beside her, I began drying her hair, my fingers brushing through the strands as I worked. The soft hum of the dryer filled the room, creating a soothing rhythm.
As I glanced at her, I noticed her eyes fluttering shut, her face finally relaxing. She looked fragile, but there was a quiet strength in her tooâone I vowed to protect with everything I had.
âYouâre safe now, Firefly,â I whispered, leaning down to press a kiss to her forehead. âAlways.â
She was tired, utterly drained both mentally and physically. I carefully laid her down on the bed, tucking the blanket around her fragile frame. Before joining her, I sent quick messages to Karan and Pooja.
I had things to take care of tomorrowâimportant onesâbut for now, they would have to wait. Karan could handle everything in the meantime. I also needed to talk to Pooja, so I asked her to meet outside tomorrow.
Once everything was settled, I climbed into bed beside Ananya. Gently, I pulled her into my arms, her head resting against my chest as her breathing slowed. Stroking her hair, I whispered soothing words until she drifted off to sleep.
My Ananya. My firefly. As long as Iâm here, no one will ever hurt her again.
