Angeline tried her best to suppress her tears as she said, âYouâll be living with us from now on, Sebastian. You donât need to return to that house anymore.â
Sebastian simply stared blankly at her in response. This was Angelineâs first time seeing him up close, and she couldnât help but notice how exquisite his facial features were.
However, there was a look of fear in his eyes, which was something a child of his age shouldnât be having.
After a long pause, he finally believed that Angeline would not hurt him and nodded profusely.
Angeline carefully caressed his head while resting it on her chest.
She turned toward Nancy and whispered, âThank you.â
Although Nancy was tearing up as well, she rolled her eyes at Angeline and retorted, âWhat are you thanking me for? Your son is my godson. Sebastian, you need to get better soon, okay? I look forward to having you become my godson-in-law!â
Angeline flashed her a mischievous grin. âYou can talk about that after you find yourself a man! What do you think of Roger?â
Nancyâs face burned bright red in an instant.
âC-Cut it out! Itâs impossible! Just seeing him annoys me a lot. Thereâs no way weâll become a couple!â
she exclaimed shyly.
Angeline let out a chuckle as she put Sebastian back in his bed and tucked him in.
She glanced at Nancy and reminded her, âRogerâs only flaw is his carefree attitude toward life. If you can look past that, heâs actually a decent guy with a great family background. You should consider giving him a chance.â
The look in Nancyâs eyes turned slightly dim as she let out a helpless sigh. âYou know how it is. Getting married and having kids is something I can only dream of. Oh, well⦠I donât expect much anyway. Iâll just try to enjoy life while I can.â
Angeline felt sad and conflicted when she heard that.
Due to them being best friends for so many years, she chose not to expose Nancyâs painful secret.
Angeline was about to bring Sebastian another bowl of oatmeal when her phone started ringing.
She held the phone up to her ear and answered the call. âHello? Who is this?â
âHello, Ms. Sorelle. This is the police station of Zone B in Hallsbay. Your child ran away from home and has been brought over by one of my colleagues. Please come and bring her home.â
âHuh? What child?â Angeline was utterly confused.
âThe child told us that her name is Floretta Golding, and she says youâre her mother.â
Angeline went pale when she heard that.
What? How is this possible? Isnât Francesca taking good care of Floretta? How did she end up running away from home? Hmm⦠Floretta is a really smart girl. She wouldnât have forced me to go to the police station unless she didnât want to go home.
âYes, sheâs my daughter. Iâll come to pick her up right away. Please look after her while I head over.
Donât interrogate her, or youâll scare her,â Angeline replied while grabbing her coat from the rack.
She was starting to tear up by the time she hung up the phone.
âSomething happened to Floretta. Could you look after Sebastian for me?â
âDonât worry. Iâll take good care of him,â Nancy reassured her.
She waited until Angeline was out of sight before letting out a huge sigh.
Angeline may not admit it, but I can tell sheâs worried about Floretta. After spending so much time together, theyâve pretty much bonded as an actual parent and child would.
That was the first time Angeline had left the hospital after staying there for so many days. She was so worried that she floored the accelerator and headed straight to the police station.
Upon entering the police station, she stopped one of the policewomen and asked anxiously, âHello, I was told that you guys brought in a little girl who ran away from home. Where is she?â
âSo, youâre the mommy that sheâs been going on and on about?â
âYes, I am.â
The policewoman had a disdainful look in her eyes as she said, âFollow me. Honestly, I donât mean to sound rude, but how do you parents lose your kids so easily?â
Angeline simply kept quiet as she followed behind her.
âDo you have any idea how dangerous it is for a child to be wandering the streets all by herself? Not only does she not have any money on her, but she also doesnât have a phone with her. No taxi will pick her up at this hour either. What if she runs into some bad guys? Fortunately, our colleagues on patrol found her and brought her in. She wouldnât say a word at first, but she eventually started crying and said she was looking for her mommy,â the policewoman continued.
Sheâs looking for her mommy?
Angeline felt her heart ache when she heard that.
She had assumed that Floretta had run away from home because Francesca didnât take good care of her, only to realize it was actually because of herself.
The policewoman brought her to an office and slowly opened the door. Floretta was eating a slice of bread on the couch with many young police officers around her.
They all had snacks in their hands and affectionate smiles on their faces as they tried to cheer Floretta up.
âYouâre such a cute little girl! You look just like the girls in my favorite comic books! Are you still hungry?
I have all sorts of chips!â
Floretta flashed her a sweet smile that revealed her dimples as she replied, âThanks, Miss! Iâm already full, though. My daddy will pay you all when he gets here. He has lots of money!â
The police officers burst out laughing when they heard that. Given how adorable Floretta was, it took them a huge amount of willpower to resist the urge to pinch her cheeks.
âReally? Whoâs your daddy?â
Floretta held a finger to her lips and made a shushing noise. âI canât tell you guys that, or Iâll get in trouble. Daddy doesnât like it.â
Despite how serious she was about that, the police officers simply dismissed it as a joke.
A policeman asked her, âWhat about your mommy? You said you were looking for your mommy, right?
Who is she?â
Floretta got off the couch and patted herself on the chest as she said proudly, âMy mommy is an amazing person! Sheâs a pretty celebrity and has great acting skills! Her new film is about to be released, so make sure to support her!â
The police officers burst out laughing again when they heard that.
Angeline, however, had conflicting feelings in her heart.
