Tears welled up in Angelineâs eyes when she heard him. For a moment, she didnât know how to reply to the old man.
Wilfred let out a bitter chuckle.
âI almost forgot Iâm blind. Canât believe Iâm all alone in my last days.â His voice was filled with regret.
Angeline quickly held his hand. It took her every ounce of willpower not to cry.
âWhat nonsense are you talking about, Grandpa? Iâm right here.â She forced a cheery tone.
âAngeline?â
Wilfred was overjoyed. He grabbed her hand excitedly and babbled, âIâm so glad youâre here. Who would have thought you would be the one by my side before I passed on?â
Angeline could only comfort him with words as she couldnât bring herself to tell him the truth.
âThat wonât happen, Grandpa. The doctor said just now you will recover. You just need to recuperate.
Iâll hire some caregivers to look after you.â
Wilfred chuckled. He spoke in a relaxed manner as if he had overcome the fear of death. âI know my own body best. I only have a few days left.â
âIâll get you the best doctor-â
âNo need to waste your money. Itâs pointless now.â
Wilfred paused as his eyes darkened. He gritted his teeth and said resentfully, âItâs so unfair. I never thought that the granddaughter Iâve raised would try to kill me to get her hands on my inheritance. I thought we were family.â
Upon finishing his sentence, he clutched his chest and launched into a coughing fit.
Angeline quickly helped him up, poured him a glass of water, and fed him with a spoon.
She waited till he had calmed down before deciding to tell him the truth, even though she was worried that his heart wouldnât be able to take it.
âIâve looked into it secretly, Grandpa. Joseline is not part of the Sorelle family. But I guess only Mom and Dad would know what happened back then.â
Wilfred was stunned. However, the news didnât surprise him as much anymore after all he had been through.
âI see. Your mom was studying overseas with your dad when she was pregnant with Joseline. It wasnât until two years later that they brought her back.â
âIf thatâs the case, then my guesses must be right. Mom and Dad were kind souls. It wouldnât surprise me if they took Joseline in,â she said grimly.
âTheir kindness had nurtured a snake in their bosom!â Wilfred shouted furiously before launching into another fit of cough.
âHow dare they? How dare they hide something so important from me? How disrespectful of them,â he continued.
âGrandpa, Joseline is to blame. Mom and Dad have nothing to do with this.â Angeline couldnât help but defend her parents.
She showed even more tenderness toward Wilfred now that she knew he wasnât aware of Joselineâs background.
Would he still have kicked me out of the household and helped Joseline become who she is today if he had seen this coming? Alas, thereâs no medicine for regret.
She took a deep breath and looked Wilfred in the eye.
âGrandpa, you only need to focus on getting better by cooperating with the doctor. Leave the rest to me. Iâll make Joseline pay for everything!â
Tears welled up in Wilfredâs eyes when he heard her words. He grabbed Angelineâs hand and sighed.
âMy dear child, I have reached my limit. The future of the Sorelles lay in your hands nowâ¦â
Bang! Bang!
Just then, someone knocked on the door before pushing it open.
A man dressed in a suit stood by the door with some files in his arm. He glanced around the room with a straight face.
âGreetings, Ms. Sorelle.â
Angeline sprang up from her chair when the man greeted her.
âHello. You are?â she asked, puzzled.
The man introduced himself respectfully, âI am Old Mr. Sorelleâs lawyer, Mr. Clarke, mainly appointed to write his will.â
âI see.â
Angeline wiped her tears away, took a pillow from the couch, and placed it behind Wilfred for back support.
âIâll leave you alone with Mr. Clarke, Grandpa. See you tomorrow,â she said softly.
âOkay.â
Angeline took her bag and left the ward after that.
She noticed the solemn look on Wilfredâs face when she closed the door but said nothing.
It wasnât her place to ask Wilfred how he was planning to write his will. Moreover, she wasnât after his inheritance when she decided to care for Wilfred.
After all, he already knew the truth. There was nothing she could say or do if he decided to give Joseline his inheritance for old timesâ sake.
Nevertheless, Angeline believed that Wilfred would never do that.
She made her way to the balcony, opened it, and took a deep breath of fresh air to make herself feel better.
Her heart felt heavy as she remembered the words Wilfred had said to her in the ward.
Tears rolled down her cheeks as scenes of the Sorellesâ demise flashed past her mind.
Just as she was feeling troubled and helpless, she suddenly felt someone drape a thick suit jacket over her shoulders to keep her warm.
Angeline froze. She knew who it was just by the smell of sandalwood on the suit jacket.
âWhy are you still here? Whereâs Floretta?â She turned and noticed Evander standing alone behind her.
âFrancesca has fetched Floretta back, so donât you worry. Do you want to have some Jetroinian food?â
Meanwhile, in the ward, Wilfred adjusted to a more comfortable position, put his fist near his lips, and coughed heavily.
Mr. Clarkeâs eyes were filled with concern as he sized him up.
âOld Mr. Sorelle, your illness is getting worse. I heard you were sent to the emergency room just now.
Should I come another day?â
âNo need. My days are numbered. Letâs settle this once and for all so that there is one less thing for me to worry about.â
âOkay.â
Mr. Clarke didnât say anything anymore since Wilfred was adamant about it. He flipped open the file in his hand.
âOld Mr. Sorelle, Iâve drafted the asset distribution agreement. Are you sure you want to hand Sorelle Group over to Joseline?â
Wilfred hesitated upon hearing his words. It took him a long while before he answered, âYes!â
âOkay. I will need you to sign the will if you have no more questions. The agreement will take effect starting today.â
âOkay.â
Wilfred nodded in agreement. He then chop-signed a series of documents as Mr. Clarke had instructed.
