Sir. Wilson gazed at Elizabeth, his stern expression mixed with a touch of tenderness.
Upon witnessing this, Lindaâs mood sank even further, reminding herself not to let the secret out.
She was determined to prove to her family that she was more useful than the good -for-nothing Elizabeth.
Elizabeth glanced at Sir. Wilson, and then she asked, âFeeling happy today?â
Taken aback, Sir. Wilson complimented, âSo good for you, Elizabeth. The project I mentioned to you yesterday was successful.â
âThatâs great.â
She thought to herself that Peter did a decent job; he deserved some credit.
Without asking further, Elizabeth turned to greet Emily at the entrance.
Emily had mentioned she would be coming over to study with her, marking the first time a friend would be visiting her.
She was slightly nervous in anticipation.
Before Elizabeth could leave, Sir. Wilson added, âIt all went smoothly thanks to
Linda.â
Elizabethâs eyebrows knitted together as she looked at Linda who was barely
smiling and remarked indifferently, âOh?â
Sir. Wilson explained, âIt was the father of one of Lindaâs friends who assisted us.â
âReally?â Elizabeth asked, fixing her gaze on Linda.
Linda didnât respond, but Sir. Wilson jumped in, âI already confirmed it over the phone.â
Still skeptical, Elizabeth repeated, âReally?â
Her deep, dark eyes bore into Lindaâs, making one feel as though they couldnât hide anything.
Facing that intense stare, Linda felt an inexplicable anxiety; her palms sweated, and her heartbeat quickened.
Trying to hide her nervousness, Linda responded with conviction, âOf course, itâs true.â
She tried to reassure herself that nobody would discover her lie. Only she and Ben knew.
She had already decided she would ensure Ben remained silent on the matter.
Elizabethâs long eyelashes cast a shadow over her eyes as she replied in a soft voice, âI see.â
Linda felt that Elizabeth was acting strange, but she couldnât pinpoint the reason.
Irritated by Elizabethâs persistent doubt, she concluded that Elizabeth must be jealous of her ability to contribute to the familyâs affairs while she stood by helplessly.
With a slight arch of her eyebrow, Elizabeth stopped addressing Linda and moved toward the door, waiting for Emily.
On her way, she blinked, pausing a moment.
And then she pulled out her phone to call Peter.
âBoss? You need something?â Peterâs voice came through. With a calm tone, Elizabeth stated, âSomeone is lying.â
Peter, confused, responded, âSo what?â
âI gave her a chance, but she still lied,â Elizabeth said, her face stern.
Peter sighed, âWhy do you care? Itâs none of your business. Besides, youâre not the type to meddle.â
She countered, âSheâs claiming credit for the project I secured for the Wilson Group.â
Peterâs temper flared, âWhat? Sheâs trying to steal your thunder? Iâll make her pay.â
Elizabeth dryly remarked, âYouâre quite the hypocrite.â Peter was left speechless.
Trying to change the subject, he said, âLeave this to me.â
Elizabeth just responded, âAs you see fit.â
Her grandfather had always emphasized honesty among family members.
Since Linda wasnât being truthful, Elizabeth felt she wasnât being a good family member.
She needed to set things right.
After waiting for a few minutes, Emily arrived.
After greeting the Wilson family, Elizabeth led Emily upstairs.
âYour room looks so youthful,â Emily observed, picking up a pink plush toy and squeezing it. âElizabeth, youâve got quite the girly side.â
Elizabeth simply replied, âMom arranged it.â
While laying out her homework, Emily remarked, âYour family treats you well, except for Linda. Sheâs a bit too much.â
Elizabeth considered the comment. While she didnât think the term was particularly pleasant, she felt it oddly fitting for Linda. So, she just nodded in agreement.
âYeah..â
