I frowned in confusion. What more could there be to explain Diana’s attitude?

Alexander took a shaky breath. “It’s not just that Diana’s not my biological mother,” he said hesitantly. “I also found out that Leonard Black... wasn’t my father.”

I stared at him in disbelief. His words didn’t make any sense. If Alexander had been the product of some young romance his father had, the story would add up. But how could he not be related to either of his parents?

“Yes,” Alexander answered, and there was so much shame in his face that it made my heart ache for him.

“But... why is that such a bad thing?” I asked, confused. “Surely your father chose to adopt you.”

“He did,” Alexander agreed, his voice heavy. “But not out of the goodness of his heart. It’s... much more complicated than that.”

“Complicated how?” I asked. “I’m sorry, Alexander. I know this is painful for you to talk about, but... I’m so confused.”

Alexander took another drink from the bottle, then set it on the counter and stood up straight, crossing his arms over his midsection. His face was tense, and I couldn’t tell if he was feeling disgust or anger. He took a deep breath, steadying himself, his gaze fixed on the floor.
