2/2 Chapter 0260 Chapter 0260 +25 BONUS âMake a move against him.â
The words made my heart stutter, leaving ine nearly breathless. My chest tightened, and for a moment, the room seemed to spin.
Alexanderâs hand was on my shoulder suddenly, grounding ne. His steady voice broke through the fog as he thanked the king.
I opened my mouth, trying to respond, but my throat felt so dry that no words came out.
The kingâs gaze softened as he looked at me, clearly recognizing the panic in my expression.
âDonât worry,â he said gently. âIâll make sure this is finalized before I step down. There will be no chance for David to worm his way out of this.â
âOkay,â I managed weakly. âThank you.â
The king nodded, then turned his attention to Alexander. âAm I right in assuming that you plan to run in the election?â
âThatâs right,â Alexander confirmed; his tone calm and assured.
âI wish you the best of luck,â the king said with a small smile. âIâm sure you understand-â
âItâs better not to name a successor,â Alexander interjected smoothly. âIâm not offended in any way.â
The king gave a satisfied nod, his respect for Alexander evident in his expression.
âKnow that you can always reach out to me should you need anything,â the king said. âFor now, Iâm afraid I need to get back to work. This announcement isnât going to stay between us for long, and the public will want to hear from me.â
âThatâs very true,â Alexander replied. âWe wonât keep you The two men shook hands, and then the king turned and left.
The moment we were alone, Alexander pulled me into his arms without warning.
I was shocked by the sudden hug, but grateful. I let myself melt into his embrace, feeling unsteady, as though my legs might give out. Having Alexander offer his strength like this meant more to me than I could put into words.
I wrapped my arms tightly around him, leaning into the warmth and steadiness of his body. After a moment, I heard him speak, his voice so low that I felt the rumble in his chest as much as I heard the words.
âI canât imagine what youâre feeling right now,â he murmured. âThereâs a lot to process, but I promise you, things are going to work out for the best. Weâve been preparing for all of thisâdonât forget that.â
âI know,â I said softly, my voice trembling. âItâs not that I feel blindsided. Itâs just... David has proven to be dangerous. I donât know what heâs going to do when he realizes the walls are closing in.â
Alexanderâs hold tightened, his tone laced with barely restrained anger. âIâm not going to let anything happen to you again. Iâll do whatever it takes to make sure he canât get anywhere near you.â
âBut we donât know how far his influence goes,â I countered, my words spilling out in a rush. âHe has people supporting himâand theyâll keep supporting him if he chooses to run for king, which we know he will. And besides that, we donât even know how many other spies he might have. Dr. McIntyre is still on the loose.â
Alexander stroked my hair gently, his touch soothing. âTake a deep breath,â he told me firmly.
1/3 +25 BONUS Chapter 0260 I wanted to argue, but I could hear the panic in my own voice as I spoke. His calm command was like a lifeline, pulling me back from the edge.
I breathed deeply, willing my thundering heart to calm down.
After a few moments, I felt more in control of myself and gently pulled out of Alexanderâs grip. Normally, I would have felt embarrassed by such an interaction, but right now I was only grateful for his comfort.
âWeâll increase the guards,â Alexander said firmly. âAnd security around the building. Iâll speak with James to see who he thinks would be a good addition to your-
âNo,â I interrupted, shaking my head. âAll of that increased security would look suspicious. David doesnât know yet that the king is closing in on him, right? If we start acting like this, it might tip him off. Besides, we already increased security after Dr. McIntyre escaped. Thereâs not much more we can do.â
Alexander didnât look happy with my response, but he nodded in reluctant agreement.
âHas there been any news about Dr. McIntyre?â I asked cautiously.
Alexander put his arm around me. âWeâll talk about it in the car,â he said. âItâs best not to get into it here when someone could walk in at any moment.â
I nodded, feeling my face heat slightly as I realized we were still standing in the meeting room. Together, we walked out to the car, Alexander opening the door for me.
Once we were safely in the back, Alexander pulled out his phone. After a moment of tapping on the screen, he handed it to me.
On the screen was a photo of a woman I immediately recognized as Dr. McIntyreâbut the name beneath the photo was different.
âBrianna Sanders,â I read aloud, looking at Alexander questioningly.
âThatâs her real name,â he explained. âWeâve been digging into her background and found quite a bit.â
My eyes widened as recognition hit me. âThatâs why I thought I knew her,â I said softly. âNurse Sanders. She used to work under Dr. Bowman. Sheâs dyed her hair and gotten rid of her glasses, but itâs definitely the same woman.â âDo you remember what happened to her?â Alexander asked.
I shook my head. âNo. I remember there was some kind of scandal with her family, but I was a teenager then, and I wasnât paying much attention to those things.â
âHer parents were banished by your father,â Alexander explained. âThey were sent to the Roguelands, and she disappeared shortly after. At the time, it was believed she was simply too humiliated by her parentsâ banishment to stay in Rowanwood Pack lands. But it seems she was working all along to exact some kind of revenge.â
âSo she wasnât simply hired by David,â I murmured, staring at the photo. âShe had personal reasons for what she did to me.â
âYes,â Alexander confirmed grimly. âIt seems that by poisoning you and costing you your wolf, she hoped to cause you some of the pain she felt from losing her parents.â
âBut I had nothing to do with their banishment,â I protested, feeling a chill run through me.
âShe was holding you responsible for your fatherâs actions, it seems,â Alexander said quietly.
I looked up at Alexander, holding his phone out to him. âThis doesnât help us deal with David, does it?â I ask 2/3 +25 BOHUS Chapter 0260 âIt may,â he responded. âI donât believe that David reached out to Dr. Mcintyer directly. I think that someone else Is helping him to find all of these people heâs hiring. Someone behind the scenes thatâs pulling the strings.â
âWho?â
âI donât know yet,â he answered. There was something in his expression that made me think he wasnât telling me the truth, but I didnât press.
Alexander was working hard, it seemed. While I was busy worrying over his relationship with Fiona, he was working overtime to track down the source of the danger threatening me. I had to be more like him.
There was no time to worry about anything but bringing David down and saving the kingdom from the threat posed by him and his allies. I couldnât let anything come between me and that goal, not anymore.
