Mo Yan and Lu Junming searched alongthe pond but only found two under the tree.
âIt seems that they like to lay their eggs under the tree. Thatâs probably their nest.â
Mo Yan sat down to rest, and Lu Junming sat next to her, âMy grandfather ordered food from Dengyun Tower, and wanted to ask your family to eat with us, but your mother refused vehemently. She said she wanted to celebrate the festival with your grandmother.â
Mrs. Liang was very stingy, but sheâd never beg for other peopleâs food.
âMid-Autumn Festival is for the members of your own family to reunite, after all.â Mo Yan said.
âBut we ordered a lot of food! How can grandpa and I finish it all?â
He thought that if his grandfather asked, Mrs. Liang would acquiesce, but she didnât
Speaking of food, Mo Yan suddenly remembered she forgot to give food to that little beggar today. It was the Mid-Autumn Festival, and she didnât know if heâd be able to eat anything.
âLu Junming, do me a favour.â
âWhat?â
âGo to the market. Thereâs a shack behind the road, can you deliver some food to the person who lives there?â
âWhy, do you know him?â
âHeâs a little beggar who also comes from the Upper Valley. Heâs an orphan.â
âOkay, then Iâll go later. Iâll get some of the food for dinner. We canât finish it anyway.â
âOkay, please get him some meat. He probably hasnât had any for a long time. If he is not there when you arrive, just put the food in his shack.â
Mrs. Liang was calling for Mo Yan to go home, afraid that sheâd follow Lu Junming. At the very least, all of her children could control their own mouths, and theyâd never beg for food. Even Mo Feng was only gluttonous at home.
Mo Yan returned home with a basket containing only two duck eggs. Mrs. Liang stood at the door and asked with a smile, âDid you get a basket of eggs?â
Mo Yan smiled awkwardly, âOnly two, but theyâll be more in the future.â
âThatâs fine. Letâs eat earlier today, so we can go moonwatching!â
Because of the busy harvest, sheâd stopped the storytelling for a few days.
Lu Junming rode to the town on horseback. He first picked up the food from Dengyun Tower. There were stacks of food boxes with over ten dishes. Then, he went behind the road and found the shack. He asked âIs anyone there?â
No one respondedâ¦the beggar shouldnât be here.
He opened a food box, and right on the top was a pork chop, which was still steaming. He put his elbow into the shack, and got on the horse with the food box.
Just after turning around the corner, he saw a little beggar with a stick in his hand, walking over listlessly. When passing by him, he should have been attracted by the fragrance of the food as he glanced at him before walking towards the shack.
In the Mo familyâs kitchen, there was the fragrant smell of stewed meat.
As the three children sat down to eat, Mrs. Liang said to Mo Feng, âGo pick up your grandma.â
Mo Feng twisted his head, âWhy are we calling her, when she didnât call us when she was eating stewed meat!â
âGo!â Mrs. Liang slapped the table, and Mo Feng pouted and went out.
After a while, they heard the sound of a walking stick. When the sound was about to reach the kitchen, Mrs. Liang got up and greeted the door, âMother, youâre here. The children made some money from doing business and bought some meat for today.â
The old woman pulled a long face, then entered the room and sat at the head of the seat. Mrs. Liang ordered, âLingâer, serve your grandma a lot of meat, Fengâer, get the bread.â
The old woman cleared her throat and said, âDonât serve too much, I canât eat too much at night. Just give me a little meat.â
Mo Feng turned around to grab the bread, hiding an eye-roll.
There werenât many vegetables in the house, only the beans and green beans planted by the wall. All of them were stewed alongside the meat.
Mo Ling followed the old womanâs orders and served her two pieces of meat. The rest were vegetables. Mrs. Liang handed a piece of bread to her, and he looked at it and said, âI can eat white bread? It seems that Mo Feng has actually brought money home.â [1]
Mrs. Liang pretended to suddenly remember something, slapped her thigh and said, âI almost forgot! His father actually sent money back home. Lingâer, hurry up and bring it to your grandma, along with the letter.â
Mo Ling ran to the main room to get the things, âThis was from a postman that came today. Quick, open it up and see how much my father brought you.â
If they gave it to her privately, she wouldâve complained about there being too little money.
Mo Feng read the letter, and the old woman harrumphed, âItâs just eight hundred dollars, what are you looking at?â After that, she put the money in her pocket and started eating.
In the Lu family, the table in front of the two was full of food. Sir Lu took the wine jar and poured some wine, âMingâer, come and accompany grandpa for a drink.â
âIâm not thirsty.â Lu Junming looked at the dishes in front of him, sweet and sour fish, eight treasure chicken, and imperial beef. Mo Yan must have never eaten these dishes.
He picked at the food, and thought it was meaningless to eat if Mo Yan wasnât there, so he put down his chopsticks and stood up, âIâm full!â
Sir Lu halted him, âStand there!â
Lu Junming thought his grandfather was angry, so he just stood there. Sir Lu drank the wine and said, âPut the food in the food boxes, and go to the Mo family. If we come to them, they canât kick us out!â
Lu Junming agreed, and quickly packed up. Sir Lu also took the wine jar, and the two went to the Mo family together.
At this time, the dinner at the Mo family was drawing to a close. Mo Feng ate to his heartâs content and finished a large bowl of stewed meat. He just put down the empty bowl, when he heard Sir Lu say at the door, âHello, the two of us have come to join in the fun.â
Before he finished speaking, Lu Junming happily carried the food boxes into the kitchen, âYanâer, please help set up the table.â
Before waiting for the Mo family to react, he had already opened the food boxes and took out the dishes one by one. Mo Feng had never seen them before and couldnât help but exclaim, âThereâs so much food! Lu Junming, why didnât you come early? I just ate a bowl of stewed meat, and now I donât have much of an appetite.â
Lu Junming regretted forgetting that the Mo family had this prodigious eater. He shouldâve used him to eat with the Mo family from the start.
Sir Lu came in and saw the old woman. He put down the wine jar, and bowed slightly to her, âYouâre here as well? My grandson felt lonely at home and wanted some company, so we came. This is from Dengyun Tower, you should have some.â
In terms of seniority, Sir Lu was above the old woman, but he was being polite because of her age. The old woman stood up and said, âIâm too old to eat this much, you can have it! Iâm going back to rest.â
Mrs. Liang motioned to Mo Feng to send her off, but Mo Feng saw the table full of dishes and didnât move. However, he didnât dare to go against Mrs. Liang either, so he had to go.
When she left, Mrs. Liang asked Sir Lu to sit down and asked Mo Ling to pour wine for him.
Post-edit notes: Damn, Sir Lu really pampers his grandson a lot huh.
