âWhy?â
Silvia pursed her lips as she could sense Neilâs anger beneath his calm exterior.
âIâm truly grateful that you saved me, and there were moments when I considered getting back together with you.
âYet, every time I tried to commit to that decision, I would recall the image of you being with Ada.
âIn Ten Miles Village, you cut off that rope without hesitation when the massive wave hit. It was the first time you had decisively chosen me. But I know itâs because Ada wasnât with you. If she had been there, would you have chosen me so easily? I think the answer would be no.â
Neilâs gaze turned cold. He looked into her eyes and said, âThese are just assumptions. Itâs unfair of you to think of me that way.â
Silvia wore a bitter smile. She shook her head and said, âI know, but I canât take that risk again. Iâve thrown away three years of my life. Now that Iâve finally moved on, I donât want to repeat the same mistakes.â
âDonât you have any confidence in me?â
âItâs not about you. I donât have any confidence in myself. Even if we got back together, it would be hard for me to trust you once more. Sooner or later, weâll probably end up parting ways again.â
As she finished speaking, silence filled the car.
It took a while before Neil finally said, âI understand.â
âThank you. Youâve saved me twice, so think of it as me owing you two favors.â
Neil felt increasingly irritated, and he did not want to hear her trying to distance herself from him.
âThatâs enough. I donât want to hear it. Just leave.â
Neil was worried that if he stayed with her any longer, his anger would intensify.
Silvia silently stepped out of the car. As soon as she closed the door, the black Maybach drove away.
Her heart hurt as she watched the car disappear from her sight, and her eyes were a bit teary.
She blinked and suppressed her emotions. Once she calmed down, she headed in the opposite direction of Neilâs car.
They were from different worlds. If they continued to be with each other, nothing good would come out of it.
Upon returning to the mansion, Silvia was surprised to see Chris waiting at the door.
âWhat brings you here?â
Chris hugged her tightly in response.
Just as she was about to pull away, she felt a warm tear on her neck.
She was momentarily stunned.
Was Chris crying?
âSilvia, Iâm sorry. I should have let you go first.â
He could not imagine what he would do if Silvia actually died because of him.
He was in a daze the entire day before. As soon as he heard the news of her safe return, he hurried to her doorstep and waited for her.
Hearing the guilt in his tone, Silvia did not push him away. She gently patted him on the back and tried to sound nonchalant by saying, âIâm fine. You donât need to feel bad at all.â
âI wonât put you in danger like that again!â
He vowed never to let himself be in the same powerless situation as yesterday.
Watching helplessly as Neil cut the rope and jumped into the water was more distressing for Chris than facing his own imminent death.
âOkay. You need to let go of me now. Iâm almost out of breath.â
Chris quickly released her with eyes full of guilt.
âIâm sorry.â
Silvia shook her head. âDonât worry about it. Itâs late. You should go back and rest.â
âAlright. You should rest too.â
