Book 2: Chapter 57 â Spectral Shadow
Noah raised his spear at the projection, watching it stand there with its hands raised. âGive me one reason not to kill you immediately,â Noah said.
"What a mean way to greet yourself,â the spectre replied, not showing any fear.
âWhatâs going on Noah?â Auerlia asked, looking at the spectre in confusion.
âOne of my projections ran away. Not sure why but it was after it encountered the Abyssal cult. Iâm thinking they did something. Regardless, I donât want an evil clone running around,â Noah said.
âHe helped me,â Snow said, standing up. âI only survived because he helped me out. We took out all the life clots spread everywhere too.â
Noah glanced at Snow, surprised for a moment, before looking back at the spectre. âIs that true?â
âWill you trust me if I say yes?â he asked, shrugging.
Noah looked into the spectreâs eyes for a moment, before he lowered his spear. âIâm listening.â
âI donât have a lot to say besides what I already did. I want to help,â the spectre replied.
âOr maybe you just want the Shard,â Noah said.
âMaybe I do. Maybe I donât,â the spectre replied, non chalant.
âWhy did you run away? You couldâve told me what happened,â Noah said.
âWell, at the time I didnât really know, but Iâve had some time since then to think. Thereâs multiple answers, so Iâll start with the first one. I didnât want to die.â
Now frowned. âWhat do you mean?â
âIâve changed in some ways. The levels and status, both have changed me. Maybe at the time I still couldâve merged back with you, but now that seems unlikely. I used Devourer. It gave me mana, and made me grow. But perhaps I grew too much. Instead of a limb, I become more⦠of a person instead?â
âYou are correct, spectre,â Zax said, breaking his silence. âBut you are not complete yet. You can tell, canât you?â
The spectre looked at Zax, giving him a nod.
âWhat does that mean?â Noah asked.
âIt means that your spirit has the ability to regrow itself Noah. Like a tree branch that can grow roots and become its own tree. When you make your projections, you split your spirit, and this one, has grown into its own tree. But it lacks a soul still. So it is not entirely separate from you yet,â Zax said.
Noah glanced back. âSo that means I can still kill it and fix the problem?â
âWhoa man, bloodthirsty arenât you?â the spectre said.
âShut up. Just looking at your face annoys me,â Noah spat back.
Aurelia gave Noah a look, but he didnât reply.
âNot quite. We do not think killing the spectre would do anything at this point. A child cannot become the parent again. Not with that method. But first, we will let the spectre speak,â Zax said.
âRight, where was I? Yeah, why I ran. The first reason you know now. The second is⦠a little more complicated. Have you noticed that whenever you make us, weâre not all quite the same?â
âI have.â
âWell, I got your sense of self preservation. The one you have tried so very long to keep in check. Guess what happens when that becomes free?â the spectre said.
Noah looked at it, trying to make sense of its words. âSo because of that you donât want to die?â
âThe opposite. Because of it, I donât want us to die. To me, youâre still me. More me than I am in some ways. There is this nagging voice in my head that is telling you to keep you alive, even if it means forcing you into a box and shoving you into my dimensional storage,â the spectre said.
âYou donât get to choose my actions,â Noah replied.
âI know, which is why Iâm here. Trying to help,â the spectre replied.
âI canât trust you. Not until you become a part of me again,â Noah said.
âThe almighty dragon says we canât. But youâre more than free to try,â the spectre replied.
Noah raised his spear, and the spectre bared its fists. Ready to fight if it came down to it.
âStop,â Zax said, raising his hand. âThere is a way still.â
Noah and the spectre both looked at Zax, listening intently.
âYou two are not unlike twins. Identical, but not the same. No, in some ways, you are even more similar than twins are. You share the same spirit and soul after all. But while the previous connection has been lost, nothing stops us from creating a new one,â Zax said.
âHow?â Noah asked.
âSpectre, would you be willing to become a part of Noah, if it meant you still got to keep your sense of self?â Zax asked.
The spectre thought over it. âIâm not too opposed to the idea.â
âNoah, would you be willing to accept the spectre, if it was a part of you, independent, but still you?â
Noah thought over it as well. âI can work with that.â
Zax nodded. âVery well, then lastly. Would you be willing to sacrifice that cloak, as a price for this bond? It will not be gone, but it will become a part of the spectre instead. But as a price, you yourself will not be able to use it.â
Noah shrugged. âI never liked it anyway, so thatâs fine.â
âVery well. In that case, we have a way,â Zax said, walking closer. Turning towards the spectre he pointed to the cloak. âHand it to us.â
The spectre looked at Noah warily for a second, but handed the cloak to the dragon. Magic flared around the cloak, invisible shadowy wisps rising from upon it. âA work of art, not seen anymore in the world. A fine piece, this is. And a fine tool for what we require of it.â
The cloak slowly began to dissolve, before eventually it converted into a ball of shadow threads, intangible, yet present, floating above Zaxâs palm.
âSpectre, absorb this,â Zax said.
The Spectre looked at it in confusion.
âYou can, canât you?â Zax asked.
A moment later, the spectreâs eyes widened, before a grin formed on its face. âAhahaha, Iâd never even considered- man we have a lot to learn.â
Zax smiled as well as the spectre took the shadowy ball, closing his eyes. A moment later, something shifted as the threads began to flow into the spectre, changing it. Dark wisps began to flow into the spectre, altering its body, and a moment later, the figure collapsed turning into a dark shadow within the ground as, moving around freely before it rose back up again.
âNoah, use your chains to bind the spectre back to yourself,â Zax said.
Noah nodded, letting his runic chains form. The spectre stood still as the chains slowly began to wrap around it one by one, runes flowing into its body. The two of them looked at each other, a swirl of magical runes surrounding them, as Noah felt some part of his soul pulling at the spectre, and sighing in relief as the gap left in him was closed.
With a flowing pull of mana, the spectre dissolved into dark motes, flowing into Noahâs body.

Noah closed his eyes, feeling a vast pool of energy filling him, as he was changed in some crucial way. Guess Iâm officially no longer human.
Slowly opening his eyes, Noah saw Zax standing in front of him, watching him in silence. He looked down at himself, finding his body mostly the same, yet the changes that had happened, invisible though they may be, had been significant.
âHow do you feel?â the dragon asked.
âMostly the same,â Noah replied, moving his body around. âSays Iâm no longer human.â
âYou barely were even when we met you,â Zax replied.
âI guess thatâs true,â Noah replied.
A moment later, his shadow stirred, the spectre rising from the ground as it stood in front of him. It âWhoa, that was⦠weird.â
âGuess Iâm stuck with this guy now,â Noah said, looking at the Shadow spectre.
âArenât you glad. Iâm like your second in command. Also, now that Iâm a part of you again, I can tell how sloppy you were when creating us. You do know that you have absolute control on every ability we can access yeah? Kinda dumb to include Dimensional Pocket and Devourer in that you know,â the spectre said, shrugging. âYou only have yourself to blame.â
Noahâs eyebrow twitched. âExcuse me for not figuring out how an entirely new ability works. Unlike everything else, this one didnât even come with a clear feeling of how.â
âUnique abilities are created by you, anyone else who inherits this ability will have the guidance of your soul, but you will have to pave your own way with them,â Zax replied.
âMaybe donât do that again, unless you want more free clones running around,â the spectre said, before dissolving into little motes of darkness as it returned to Noahâs shadow.
Noah shook his head. âThis is a bunch of stuff, Iâll need some time to process.â
âAs is natural. And I assume, the rest would like to take some time as well to prepare before we head in for battle,â Zax said.
The rest nodded, Snow in particular.
âThat was strange to watch,â Aurelia said.
âWith that done, we should discuss what our next steps should be,â Erwest added.
Noah nodded. The specter in his shadow moved, smiling, as his thoughts were conveyed to Noah. A moment later, Noahâs own expression turned into a smile as he looked at everybody else.
âIâve got a plan.â
