Okay I'm done being dramatic. Here's the next chapter and can we collectively pray that summer will come soon. Thanks.
The weekend came and went way too fast. Alexander and I didn't even leave his home until yesterday when I forced him to go to work.
Tuesday came and was hands down the most boring day of the week. There wasn't anything going on since all the meetings were usually later in the week. For the past couple hours I'd just been organizing through Alex's papers. For a successful business man he was extremely unorganized, but I don't blame him for being that way. He's got so much to deal with the last thing on his mind is to put a file with other files alike.
Even as I sat there looking at various papers, trying to focus on the task at hand, I couldn't. My mind always seemed to drift back to Alex. This past weekend was one of the best weekends I'd ever had. Being with him made me happier than I ever thought I could be.
A loud noise from the room behind me, Alex's office, made me jump slightly. I stood up and opened the door quickly. Alex sat at his desk, head in his hands, with papers scattered around the floor. "What's wrong?" I asked, slightly panicked.
He raked a rough hand through his hair and shook his head. "Dimitri had the contract dropped off this morning." Alex breathed out. His voice was low and full of disappointment.
I walked over to him, picking up papers as I approached his desk. "What does it say?"
He kept looking at the contract with a hard glare. "Everything we tried to avoid."
I looked between him and then the papers. I picked up the contract and flipped through it. It stated that everything Alex owned will be signed over to Dimitri including all the foreign accounts and deals he had with other businesses nation and world wide. "There's got to be a way out of this..." I said more to myself. I continued reading through the dozens of papers in the stack and cake across multiple threats to release the information of his parents citizenship. That had me thinking... how does he know so much about that?
"I swear I'll put that fucker six feet under." Alexander growled. "Ana, if I lose everything just know that I will still provide for youâ"
"Why did you parents lose citizenship?" I asked, cutting him off. Something just doesn't seem right. Any of it.
He rolled his eyes. "Ana, have you not listened to anything I said?"
"Alex, focus. How did it happen?" I know he was panicking, but he needed to concentrate on this right now.
He shook his head before sighing. "Something in their citizen papers."
I tapped on my chin in thought. That just doesn't add up. How could they just cancel their visa's over one forgotten piece of paper? I stood up and went over to Alex's filer drawer. "You have their papers right?" I asked.
I heard his chair squeak as he stood from it and walked over to me. "This one," He said, bending down and opening the drawer on the bottom. I crouched down to see a file stating his parents names. I pulled the thick folder out and sat in his chair behind the desk. Placing the folder onto the desk. "There was a legal document that they claimed never to be sent in and since it was passed due, they wouldn't accept a new copy of the paper." He further explained.
I pursed my lips and leaned forward on the desk. That just doesn't all add up. How could there be a paper missing from this extremely important document? I highly doubt this is something Phillip wouldn't double check before sending in. "Do you know which paper it was?"
He nodded and walked around his desk to the tall filing cabinet. Alex crouched down and pulled out another folder from the back. "Page two is missing." He said, putting the papers in front of me.
I flipped it open and began scanning, right away noticing the missing page. "What was this one?"
"The most important. It basically stated that they would oblige to the law of the land. They're signatures and all their important information was on the piece of paper."
I turned my head to look at him with an arched brow. "You really think it just went poof?"
Alex shook his head. "No,"
"Me neither," I muttered and looked back down to the papers. "I think someone took it."
He leaned down so one hand held him up on the desk and the other rested on the back of the chair, looking over my shoulder to look at the papers. "But who?" He pondered.
I sat there, thinking some more. It had to be someone close to Phillip because he wouldn't just let anyone near these kind of papers. "Did your dad have some kind of assistant or..." I tailed off, allowing him to fill in my blank.
"I don't think so," He said under his breath, standing straight before he began pacing. "Actually," he stopped his pacing to turn toward me. "he worked closely with Dimitri during the mid 80's. My father basically took Dimitri under his wing and showed him the ways of business." Ok yeah that would have been good information to know, Alexander!
"He had to be the one to take it then." I stood from my seat. Dimitri had to be the one to take it. It didn't surprise me that he would betray someone that was trying to help him.
"That's what I've always thought, but my father has given him the benefit of the doubt." Alex grumbled, his palm coming up to rub the side of his face.
"It's obvious this is his doing. Dimitri doesn't have loyalty to anyone. He's a snake. He probably wanted to take over your father's company from the beginning." I reasoned, trying to understand the mind of an evil person. "But why now?" Why would he bring up all of this now? Phillip doesn't even run the company anymore.
"Because he was waiting for the right time." Alex figured. "He waited until he absolutely needed my father's company." He shook his head as he pieces together everything. "He waited until I took over, especially after all the success I've had." It all makes sense. Alex has made Knight Corporations nearly four times more money than his father ever did.
Dimitri must have been planning this for years now. He must have countless papers and such stored somewhere. There's no way he doesn't. "I have an idea." I said, standing. Alex quirked an eyebrow and gestured for me to go on. "I can get into his office."
He looked at me like I had two heads. "How do you plan on doing that exactly?"
"I can go over there and pretend we had a fight or something. My mother won't suspect anything. In fact, she'll probably love that I went to her instead of going to a hotel." Secretly of course. There's no way she'd ever admit to me about how she actually felt.
He shook his head, walking over to me. "No way, I'm not sending you over there." His voice was stern.
But I rolled my eyes, despite that I knew he was just trying to protect. Sometimes he just really needs to accept the help. "I'm doing it," I crossed my arms.
"No, Anastasia. I'm serious." His next step toward me made me take a step back. I wasn't going to let him try and think he can intimidate me into some kind of submission. I know he wasn't intentionally doing that, but Alexander was used to getting his way. He's in for a quite the awakening.
"So am I,"
He let out a deep breath, pinching the bridge of his nose with his eyes closed. "Please try and listen to me for once."
I scoffed. "Alexander, calm down. Nothing bad is going to happen." I hope. "If I can't get in then we'll try something else." I was confident that I could do this. I knew there were answers we needed in that office of Dimitri's and we were going to get them one way or another.
He stood there, looking at me with uncertainty and his jaw hard. I knew he was fighting with himself to just give in and let me do this. Apart of me wanted to crumble and say I wouldn't do it. I hated seeing Alex upset and I knew he felt the same why about me. But sometimes in order for things to happen you have to take risks. I reached for his hands to hold in mine as I stood inches away. "Trust me,"
He sighed after a long moment and nodded. "Okayâ but if he tries to do anything you have to tell me."
I nodded. "I will, don't worry." I reached up to press my lips to his, a kiss sealing my promise.
Later that day we got home and it was time to call Diana. If this first part worked then I knew we'd be able to get into that office. She was a dense woman and since she had no knowledge of what was going on with her husband she won't suspect a thing.
Alex sat next to me on the couch with his hand wrapped around my waist. He'd always been touchy, but ever since we got married he hasn't been able to keep his hands off. Not that I minded. But I always got red when he did it in front of people. Lucky for Alex he truly doesn't care what people think.
I held the phone out in front of me on speaker phone and we waited as it dialed. After nearly a minute she answered, her usual snarky tone.
"Mom, I need a favor." I said quickly, fake sadness seeping into my tone.
"What is it, Anastasia?" She, however, still remained to sound bored.
"Could I stay with you for the night? Alex and I had a fight."
She let out a heavy sigh that made me roll my eyes. I glanced over to Alex to see him do the same thing. "I guess," she said.
I smirked. "Okay, I'll be over soon." Diana said a quick goodbye before hanging up the phone. I looked back over at alex with an arch brow.
He just shrugged, knowing what I was thinking. "I still think it's a bad idea." He sat back on the couch, bringing me with him.
I rested my head on his shoulder and hand across his torso. "It'll be okay,"
His hand was caressing my shoulder as he pressed a kiss against the top of my head. "Let's hope you're right."
Ok I don't know why, but this chapter took forever to write. I've been working on it for nearly three weeks! Ahhhh
