Chapter 945
This was Clairâs recent contact with Marcus, and her best shot at becoming Marcusâs motherâinâlaw. She certainly wouldnât let this opportunity slip through her fingers, and she said, âNelly, if you forgive me, Iâll give you a wellâdecorated house in Riverton. You wonât have to squeeze in that tiny rental with your two friends anymoreâ
âWhat gives you the right to call me Nelly? Donât ever say my name again. It makes me sick just to hear you say it. And for the record, Iâm happy living with my friends, even if weâre in a basement. My grandma doesnât need you to pay respects either, Iâm afraid it will tarnish her gravestone Cornelia stormed to the door, yanking it open, âGet out!â
Unexpectedly, Marcus was standing at the door.
Cornelia froze, her voice dwindled to a whisper, so low that Marcus could barely hear her if he didnât pay close attention, a far cry from her earlier bravado, âWhen did you get back?â
âJust now.â Marcus confirmed that Cornelia was okay, then turned his icy, cold gaze towards Clair.
Clair feigned surprise, âMarc, what are you doing here?â
âAyden, see the guest out!â Marcus didnât want to exchange an extra word with Clair.
Ayden immediately stepped forward, âPlease leave!â
âCornelia, are you and Marc⦠Clair tried to say something, but Ayden pulled her out before she could finish
Marcus closed the door and turned around to see Cornelia collapsed on the floor. Luckily, his quick reflexes allowed him to catch her, âCorneliaâ Cornelia weakly leaned into his arms. Once the dizziness subsided, she looked up at him, âDo you know why Clair was here?â
Marcus brushed the stray hair away from her forehead, âI know.â
Cornelia asked. âShe said sheâs my mother. Do you believe her?â
Marcus answered, âI had it investigated, and she is likely your mother.â
Cornelia suddenly became agitated, âSheâs not! Sheâs not! How could my mother be like her?! A woman who always despises me, accused me of theft, destroyed our studio, and wished I would disappear. How could a person who has done so many bad things to me be my mother!â
Marcus rubbed her back, soothing her, âOkay, if you say sheâs not, then sheâs not.â
Cornelia continued, âMy grandma once told me that my dad loved my mom very much, and my mom was a very kind person. She mustâve had her reasons for leaving my dad and me. Even after she left, my grandma couldnât bear to say anything bad about her. How could she turn into Clair who only cares about money and not feelings.â
Cornelia firmly believed her mother was a kind person, but Marcus knew her grandma probably just wanted to protect the image of her mother in her heart.
But Marcus couldnât say these things out loud, he also wanted to protect the goodness in Corneliaâs heart. However, even if Marcus didnât say it, Cornelia knew it deep down. She just didnât want to admit that such a woman was her mother. She chuckled and said, âBut thatâs the reality. Even though I donât want to admit it, that disgusting woman is the one who gave me life.â
Marcus, more than Cornelia, understood the pain of having parents he despise, âWe canât choose where we come from, we canât sever the blood ties with them. But when we grow up, we can choose the life we want.â
Marcus had prepared to console Cornelia, but Cornelia suddenly asked him, âWhen did you find out she was my mother?â
