Chapter 944
âGuess so.â Tanisha threw a glance over her shoulder, unsure whether leaving Clair in Corneliaâs room was good.
âWhy donât you take a break?â Zack suggested, his eyes scanning the room. The house was bustling with two card games in progress and the kitchen busy, but there was no sign of Cornelia. âWhereâs Nelly?â He asked.
âNellyâs caught up in something.â Tanisha thought it best to keep things under wraps, hence didnât disclose the whole truth to Zack, âJust carry on with your stuff, Iâll go check on herâ
Still feeling uneasy, Tanisha returned to the door to stand guard, just in case anything went south.
In the room.
Clair attempted to reach out for Corneliaâs hand but was met with avoidance before she could even touch her. Tears welled up in Clairâs eyes and some dropped, âCornelia, can you spare a few minutes for me to say something?â
Despite Clairâs tears, Cornelia remained unmoved, âGo ahead.â
Given the chance to speak, Clair was confident she could sway Cornelia
Clair sobbed. âCornelia, as soon as I heard about your grandmaâs passing, I rushed back to bid her farewell. I intended to recognize you and take you to Riverton with me. I admit I made some mistakes before, not knowing you were my daughter. If I had known, I wouldnât have hurt you even if a gun was pointed at my head.
âYou might blame me for leaving you and your father. Truth is, I didnât want to. I had severe postpartum depression back then. You know how serious depression can be. There were times I thought of ending both our lives, but thankfully, I didnât.
âI could control myself once or twice, but not every time. I was afraid Iâd lose control and do something stupid, so I asked your father for divorce and left Rosenberg alone. I planned to end my life somewhere quiet, not to bother you or your father. But then I met a kind soul who helped me overcome depression. After I got better, I went back to Rosenberg. I wanted to come home. But I saw your father ready to start a new life with another woman.! didnât want to disrupt your lives, so I left quietly, vowing never to return. Your grandma must have told you that my parents died early and I had no siblings Your father was my only support. After leaving him, I had to find a job, make a living. Later, I met Granger and became his wife.â
Clair let out a lot. But Cornelia was still stoneâfaced, âAre you done?â
Clair said, âNelly, I had my reasons for leaving you and your dad. Can you believe me?â
Cornelia said, âIf youâre done, then please leave! Stay as far away from me as possible! Donât ever show up in front of me again, and never tell anyone that youâre my mom. I wonât acknowledge it.â
Clair said, âNelly, youâre my flesh and blood. No matter how you deny our relationship, you canât change the fact that my blood is running in your veins.â
âSo what? Just because I have your blood in my veins, I should acknowledge you as my mom and forgive all your wrongdoings?â Cornelia sneered, âI might be too kindâhearted sometimes, unable to bear seeing others suffer. But for someone like you, I donât have a shred of sympathy.â
