Chapter 874
Cornelia didnât respond, but Marcus knew she had heard him. After he had said his piece, he left Granny Rebeccaâs room, even thoughtfully closing the door behind him for
Cornelia
As he stepped outside, he saw Abigail and Zack eavesdropping at the door. Those two really took after Cornelia in some ways. âGo wait in the living room. Quit snooping
around here.â
âBut Nellyâs in there all by herself, we canât just leave her,â Abigail said.
âTrust her, was Marcusâ reply.
Abigail and Zack wanted to stick around, but seeing Marcusâ confidence made them decide to follow him to the living room.
After Marcus left, Cornelia went over to Granny Rebeccaâs bedside, carefully taking her hand. âGrannyâ¦â
As she called out to her grandmother, she couldnât help but cry. Her heart ached as if it was being carved out, making it hard for her to breathe. It took her some time to calm herself down before she could continue. âGranny, itâs been a while since we had a proper chat. Letâs talk today.â
Granny Rebeccaâs hand was cold and stiff, but Cornelia held it against her face. âGranny, are you upset with me for not having a baby like you wanted? Granny, Iâve been trying to get pregnant. If you could wake up, youâd be holding my baby in a few months.â
But no matter what Cornelia said, Granny Rebecca didnât respond. Cornelia knew her grandmother couldnât respond anymore, but she still held out hope for a miracle, hoping Granny Rebecca could come back to life.
She waited, and waited, but the miracle she was hoping for never came.
Alone in the room, only her voice echoed. âGranny, have you really left me? Do you know how important you are to me? You must know, you must know how much you mean to me, yet you still left me.
âGranny, do you remember what you told me when I was 18? You said if I worked hard and got into a good university, youâd grant me a wish.
âI did work hard and got into the University of Riverton. When you asked me what I wanted, I said I wanted you to always be with me. You laughed and agreed, saying youâll be there for me, through my wedding, through childbirth, till I become a granny myselfâ¦â
Thinking about this, Cornelia couldnât help but smile. Those times felt so real, as if they just happened yesterday.
âAnd all those years when I was little, you always let me make a wish. I always wished for you to be with me, to never leave me. You asked me what I wished for, but I never told you the truth because I heard that if you say it out loud, it wonât come true.
âIf I knew then that even unsaid wishes wonât come true, I would have told you, so that you would know how important you are to me. Granny, Iâd give up everything just to have you wake up and be with me.â
If possible, Cornelia would trade everything she owns for her grandmotherâs life. But she knew that even the most precious thing in the world couldnât bring her grandmother back.
The clearer she realized this, the more it hurt.
She had to suppress her pain, so she could continue talking to her grandmother. âGranny, I know youâve been blaming yourself for me being framed. You think itâs your fault for not protecting me, leading me to be left without a home.â
