Chapter 729
On the way home, Marcus was still driving, with Cornelia sitting in the passenger seat.
âPresident Hartley, Zack invited you over to our place for his birthday party today mainly to scope you out. If he does anything out of line, I hope you wonât take it to heart, Iâll keep him in check.â
Marcus asked, âDo you think Iâm petty?â
Cornelia replied, âNo, itâs just thatâ¦â
Before Cornelia could finish, Marcus held her hand with one of his, âWhen you talk like that, it sounds like you guys are family and Iâm the outsider.â
Cornelia responded, âTheyâre the friends I grew up with, been with me for over twenty years. We just met each other, so itâs gonna take some time to adjust. In the long run, youâll be the closest person to me.â
Marcus was quite satisfied with this answer, but he wasnât going to let her off the hook just yet, âI remember someone once said that the sequence and duration of feelings are independent.â
Cornelia knew this was something she said, but she didnât want to admit it, âWho said that?â
Marcus asked, âWho do you think said it?â
Cornelia answered, âWas it me? When did I say that? How come I donât remember?â
Marcus lightly tapped her nose, âYouâre such a rascal!â
âYouâre the rascal! Your are from a family of rascals!â Cornelia quickly corrected herself after realizing she insulted herself as well, âExcept your wife.â
Marcus chuckled, âWhy is my wife the exception?â
Cornelia answered, âBecause your wife is a beautiful and kind woman!â
Marcus said, âArenât you ashamed of complimenting yourself like that?â
Cornelia responded, âDonât you agree?â
Marcus answered, âI do.â
Cornelia said, âThatâs more like it.â
Marcus just smiled and didnât say anything.
Cornelia slightly turned her body, admiring his oneâhanded driving. He really was graceful and handsome, quite the catch indeed. So many girls liked him, and living for over twenty years, did he really not have any feelings for any girl?
Cornelia was dying to know, âPresident Hartley, can I ask you a question?â
Marcus nodded.

Cornelia continued, âHave you ever liked a girl? I donât mean now, I mean in the past, like when you were a teenager or went to college.â
Marcus glanced at her and gave a vague answer, âDo you want me to say I did or I didnât?â
Cornelia said, âJust tell me the truth. I wonât mind. Iâm just wondering, with so many girls liking you, did you really not like any of them?â
Marcus answered, âThe girl I liked might not have liked me back.â
Upon hearing this, Corneliaâs eyes lit up, âPresident Hartley, can you tell me who that girl is? Iâm dying to know. Where is she now? Why arenât you two together?â
She thought, the girl Marcus liked must have had something special.
Her prying wasnât out of jealousy, but curiosity, which Marcus picked up on, âArenât you the slightest bit jealous?â
Cornelia said, âWhy should I be jealous of her? No matter how much you liked her in the past, youâre my husband now. If anyone tries to take you away, weâll have to go through legal procedures. Iâm not worried at all.â
This confidence and composure was what Marcus admired the most. He chuckled and gently ruffled her hair, âThe woman I like is my wife, and can only be my wife.â
Cornelia was completely caught off guard that his final answer was her, her emotions were all over the place, she stammered, âYou like me?â
Marcus nodded, âYes.â
Cornelia said, âButâ¦â
