Chapter 711
After dinner, Granny Luisa and Granny Rebecca exchanged knowing smiles and encouraged Marc and Nelly to call it a night. They secretly wished the couple would give them a grandchild
soon.
Granny Luisa said, âWeâre all stuffed and itâs getting late. Marc, why donât you and Nelly go get some shutâeye? Tomorrowâs Saturday, you guys donât have to work. You can catch some zâs.â
Cornelia noticed it was late, âGranny, I should head back to my rental.â
Granny Luisa frowned, âGo where? Youâre one of us now, a Hartley. We got plenty of space for you, no need to go back to that rental. People might get the wrong idea, and think we donât treat you right. Nelly, you might not fully get it yet, but this is your home too. In Riverton, newlyweds bunk at the family home for a couple of weeks. Itâs tradition.â
Cornelia mumbled, âWeâve been married for two years, not exactly newlyweds.â
Granny Luisa just wanted to keep Cornelia close, âThe date on the marriage certificate doesnât matter. What matters is that youâre here tonight as a Hartley for the first time.â
Granny Rebecca chimed in, âYou guys canât stand living with us old folks, huh?â
Granny Luisa said, âMarc, help your wife to the room and get some rest.â
Both granniesâ intentions were clear as day. Marc, of course, saw right through it. He defended Cornelia, saying, âGrannies, no rush, Weâll handle the baby thing ourselves. No need to pressure Nelly.â
Cornelia shot Marc a grateful look. He always knew how to make her feel secure when it
mattered most.
Granny Luisa felt a bit guilty, âWe⦠we werenât pressuring Nelly.â
Granny Rebecca noticed Corneliaâs upset expression and felt bad, âNellyâ¦â
âGrannies, get some rest. Iâll take Nelly for a walk in the yard.â Marc said, then led Cornelia out.
Granny Luisa watched them leave, âRebecca, did I come on too strong and scare Nelly?â
Granny Rebecca said, âYouâre usually so sweet to her; youâve never raised your voice. She might feel a bit hurt.â
Granny Luisa paced around the room anxiously, âNo, no, I canât let Nelly feel hurt. I need to find a way to apologize, need her to forgive me. I canât let her hate me.â
Granny Rebecca chuckled, âOur Nelly isnât one to hold grudges. She might forget by the time she gets back from her walk.â
Granny Luisa said, âNelly not holding grudges is her being kind. I should still apologize. Itâs hot out, Iâll whip up some chilled juice for her when she gets back.â
Granny Rebecca said, âThank you for treating Nelly so well, for cherishing her like your own granddaughter!â
Granny Luisa said, âShe married Marc, of course sheâs my granddaughter. If I donât treat her well, who would I be good to?â
Granny Rebecca was more and more pleased with Marc, âI was a bit reserved towards Marc since they had a divorce scare. I worried he wasnât truly committed to Nelly, that he was just playing around. But seeing them tonight, all my worries are gone. I can tell Marc takes good care of Nelly. He truly wants to live with her.â
Granny Luisa said, âNelly is his wife. Of course, he needs to take good care of her. If he doesnât, Iâll be the first one to make him pay.â
Granny Rebecca said, âWith you and Marc and Bri by Nellyâs side, if one day Iâm not around, Nelly wonât feel alone.â
Granny Luisa said, âWeâre still waiting for Marc and Nellyâs baby. Donât talk like that, itâs depressing.â
Granny Rebecca gave a bitter smile, âAlright, Iâll stop.â
