Chapter 702
Briana said, âTake another guess.â
Comelia took a feel but still couldnât figure it out, âCan I take a peek?â
Briana said, âSure, have a look.â
Comelia opened her eyes to see something shaped like a globe. âIs this a globe?â
Briana said, âItâs made to resemble a globe, but whatâs on the surface is totally different. Take a closer look at whatâs on it.â
Lifting the small sphere to her eyes, Cornelia scrutinized it for a while, âIs this a jade carving? With two people carved inside?â
It looked like jade but didnât feel like it. Briana said, âI canât be sure what it is, but they say whoever owns this little gem will be forever in love with their partner, till their hair turns gray. I want you and my brother to be together forever, so Iâm giving it to you as a wedding gift.â Comelia said. âThatâs a really nice thought, Iâll take it.â She didnât refuse, graciously accepting the gift from her sisterâinâlaw.
Briana said, âKeep it safe. Letâs go find Granny, or sheâll give me hell for hogging all your time when you should be chatting with her.â
The gadget wasnât big, but it was inconvenient to carry, so Cornelia returned it to Marcusâ room before heading downstairs with Briana.
Walking side by side with Briana, Cornelia suddenly thought of something. âHave you been in touch with Natalia recently?â
Briana said, âYeah, I was just chatting with her. But for some reason, I get the feeling sheâs not herself. She keeps asking me weird questions.â
Cornelia asked, âCould it be that itâs not her youâre chatting with?â
Briana said, âWhat do you mean?â
Comelia said, âMaybe her mom is using her phone.â
Briana said, âI doubt it! Her mom adores her and is really nice to all of us younger ones. When I was little and didnât have a mom, her mom would often take care of me, which is more than I can say for my own motherâ¦â Briana stopped midâsentence, realizing she had said too much.
But then again, Cornelia was part of the Hartley family and deserved to know.
Briana said, âIâm not embarrassed to admit it. Without Granny, my brother and I would be no better than orphans. Our parents have new families and kids of their own, and those kids are their real children. Itâs like my brother and I werenât even their own but picked up from a dumpster by Granny.â
Briana expressed her thoughts with an air of indifference, but a closer look at her eyes revealed her underlying worries.
She cared deeply about the parents who abandoned her and her brother. She cared about why they were so close to their other children, and she cared about why they ignored her and her brother.
At a loss for what to say, Cornelia tried to comfort the disheartened Briana, âBri, your brother is like your father, and if you want, I can take care of you as a mother would.â
This brought a smile to Brianaâs face, âCornelia, youâre not even two years older than me, how can you be talking about being my elder? I wonât let you take advantage of me.â
âNone of you are elders. The real elders are downstairs.â Granny Luisa called from the bottom of the stairs, âBri, stop messing around with Cornelia on the stairs. If you so much as harm a hair on her head, Iâll have words with you.â
