Chapter 625
Ryan deliberately asked, âMarc, who are you waiting for?â
Marcus first glanced at Cornelia. He got a million things on the tip of his tongue, but Cornelia beat him to it, âPresident Hartley, thanks for getting me out of that jam!â
It was a subtle way of telling him not to spill the beans about their real relationship.
He let out a helpless chuckle, âHop in. Iâll give you a rideâ
After Marcus spilled the beans, Cornelia was unsure of how to be alone with him. She quickly sidestepped, âMr. Ryan, did you really mean it when you said youâd treat us to
dinner?â
Ryan said, âAbsolutely But it mostly depends on whether Marc agrees.â
Marcus said âSure, letâs go eat firstâ
Ryan said, âYou pick the place.â
Marcus said, âFlavor Fusion.â
Ryan got the hint. âAre you sure about Flavor Fusion?â
Marcus said, âWhere it ended, there it startsâ
Ryan got the drift, they had run into Cornelia at Flavor Fusion before, but he had let her slip away, âAlright, Iâll make a reservation. You guys go ahead, see you in a bit.â
Leonardo said, âWhatâs with all the secret talk? Did I miss something? Have I been asleep for years and lost my memory, or am I just out of the loop?â
Marcus ignored him and opened the car door for Cornelia.
Once in the car, she looked around, avoiding eye contact with Marcus.
Marcus spoke up. âComeliaâ
Cornelia asked, âHmm?â
Marcus said, âTurn around. Look at me.â
His voice was especially appealing today, as if it held some sort of enchantment.
Cornelia glanced at him, but quickly turned away, âSeen enough.â
Marcus was left exasperated, âDonât you have anything to say to me?â
Cornelia asked, âAre you talking about work or personal stuff?â
Marcus said, âEither, as long as youâre up for a chat.â
Cornelia said, âTomorrow morning, you have a business meeting with someone from German. Youâre having lunch with him and his wife. You promised them that when theyâre in Riverton, youâd accompany them with your wife. Theyâre really looking forward to meeting your wife.â
Cornelia rattled off the schedule for the next day. After listening, Marcus asked, âSo, would you like to join them for lunch as my wife?â
Cornelia hesitated, peering at him cautiously, âCan I say no?â
Marcus suddenly got serious, âCornelia, you always have a choice. Just because youâre married to me, doesnât mean youâre not free.â
Marcus always took her feelings into account, never imposing his will on her because of his status. Many men, with nothing to their name, were dictatorial. Once they were married, they expected their wives to obey them in all things.
Cornelia thought to herself. Men like Marcus, rich, handsome and respectful were really a dying breed. If she was lucky enough to find one, she should hold on tight.
If she were to lose him to another woman, sheâd be kicking herself.
She knew this in her head, but making the decision was another story.
After much deliberation, Cornelia finally agreed, âI will.â
She was willing to take that step and Marcus was over the moon, âThank you for being willing to walk this path with me.â
Cornelia said, âBecause youâre Marcus.â
Marcus chuckled, âThen I should thank myself for giving me this opportunity.â
