Chapter 545
Marcus didnât expect Cornelia to bring up Jeremy out of the blue. He felt a bit jumpy. âWhy are you suddenly mentioning him?â
Comelia cracked a smile. âJust want to know more about him, thatâs allâ
Her smile was forced, and Marcus noticed but didnât think much of it, Iâve told you, Jeremy and I are tight. If you need to reach him but donât feel comfortable doing so, you
can tell me about it.â
Cornelia asked, âJeremy comes from a runâof the mill family, not exactly a household name in Riverton. How did you two meet?â
Marcus calmly explained. âMy grandma and his grandina were friends. They often took us out together. So, weâve known each other since we were kidsâ
âI see Cornelia responded softly, then asked, âWhat about your wife? When you are hospitalized, has she came to see you?â
Marcus replied. âShe didnât know I was sick initially, but she came as soon as she found outâ
Cornelia was a bit unsure Was he talking about her?
She averted her gaze to look out the window. The outside was pitchâdark, just like her mood. She couldnât see anything, and didnât know which way was out
Before she visited Marcus, many pieces of evidence and coincidences had already hinted at Marcus and Jeremy being the same person. But she didnât want to believe it. She wanted to hear from Marcus himself that he wasnât Jeremy. So, she came to see him, holding on to that glimmer of hope.
However, once she was here, she didnât have the courage to confront him directly. How ridiculous!
âCornelia, whatâs up with you? Marcus noticed something was off about Cornelia today
Cornelia turned back to him, âThere are some things I canât wrap my head around. President Hartley, can you help clear them up?â
Marcus said, âShoot.â
Cornelia asked, âYou canât stand your wife or girlfriend cheating on you, but would you cheat on them?â
Marcus didnât understand why she asked this, but still answered firmly. âNo.â
No!
He was very adamant about it. Then what were those intimate acts he had in bed with Natalia the other day?
Maybe he genuinely didnât consider that as cheating. Natalia was just one of his suitors, and if a suitor took the initiative, he would accept it.
Thinking about this, Cornelia laughed again, âWhat do you think is the most important thing in a marriage?â
Marcus had thought about this question before, âI believe it should be honesty, openness, mutual understanding, and tolerance.â
Honesty! Openness!
He talked a good game, but had he ever been sincere to her?
He clearly knew she was his wife, but he didnât tell her and continued to play the role of someone who cared so much in front of her.
Maybe in his eyes, she was just a toy. He was toying with her.
Feeling down in the dumps, Cornelia didnât have anything else to say She took a deep breath, stood up and said, âPresident Hartley, Iâll be taking off now.â
Marcus wanted her to stay longer and couldnât help but grab her wrist, âCornelia, donât go. Can you stay and chat with me a bit longerâ¦â
His voice wasnât as deep and powerful as usual, nor as assertive. It even carried a hint of pleadingâ¦.
Cornelia looked down at his hand gripping her wrist.
