Chapter 396
Skyler whipped up a feast quicker than she could say âabracadabraâ. There was beef and lamb, heaps of seafood, and the cherry on top was a scallop the size of her palm.
Cornelia joked, âYour farm doesnât breed scallops, does it?â
Skyler replied, âNo, but weâre close to the sea. If youâre craving fresh seafood, you can just hop in the car and head to the market.â
Cornelia, a foodie at heart, said, âSkyler, what am I gonna do? You treat me so well, I might just wanna stay here forever.â
Skyler laughed, âIf youâve got time, feel free to hang around for a few days. And when youâre free, you can drop by anytime.â
Cornelia asked, âAre you planning to live here long term? Does the farm owner treat you well? Is your salary good? Do you have money to spend?â
Skyler chuckled, âCornelia, this farm is actually mine.â
Cornelia gasped, âYours?â
Skyler nodded, âMy dad gifted me this farm when I was born. It was managed by a trust company, so it was off my familyâs books. When my family hit the rocks, this farm went unnoticed. Over the years, Iâve had people run it for me. Itâs not making me a millionaire, but itâs definitely enough to keep me fed and watered. So, you donât need to worry about me.â
Cornelia had been worried sick about Skyler running out of money. Sheâd even set aside some cash for her, but it turned out she was fretting over nothing.
Even though Skylerâs family wasnât what it used to be, she still had a decent chunk of change. What she had was more than she could ever earn in Corneliaâs lifetime.
They chatted away as they tucked into their meal.
After a while, Skyler finally asked the question sheâd been dying to ask but was too afraid to, âCornelia, did Zavier give you any trouble because you helped me get from the Capital to Riverton and then I vanished without a trace?â
The mention of Zavier made the juicy steak in Corneliaâs mouth lose its flavor, âNo, Zavier wouldnât dare mess with me, not with President Hartley around.â
Skyler breathed a sigh of relief, âThatâs a relief.â
-Cornelia said, âSkyler.â
Skyler responded, âHmm?â
Cornelia continued, âIf, I mean just if, Zavier found you, would youâ¦â
Before she could finish her sentence, Skyler turned as pale as a ghost, âCornelia, does Zavier, know Iâm here?â
âYes! Zavier knows where you are!â Cornelia wanted to spill the beans but couldnât.
Marcus Hartley was right. As long as Skyler didnât know Zavier had found her, she could live her life free as a bird, just the way she wanted.
Skyler had only just managed to get out from under Zavierâs thumb. Cornelia didnât want her to go back under it, âSkyler, donât freak out. I was just saying. Youâve got nothing to worry about. Zavier doesnât have any pull in France. He canât find you.â
âThatâs true.â Skyler took a deep breath, âIf he knew where I was, he would have sent someone to drag me back by now. He wouldnât let me live my life freely.â
