Chapter 1707
Had Skyler not been so sure that Rosie had no such intention, she could have sworn Rosie was showing off. In her eighteen years of life, Skyler had never known what it felt like to be genuinely cared for. Maybe, for the rest of her life, no one would ever show her that kind of concern again.
Rosie said, âSkyler, letâs just eat something and forget about those jerks.â
Skyler nodded. âSounds good to me.â
They had just settled down when Lucas, who had been playing poker, sidled
âRosieâ¦â
Rosie pushed him away. âWhat do you want?â
Lucas said, âI was calling you. Why didnât you come over?â
Rosie replied, âWhy should I join you guys when youâre playing cards?âe2
Lucas stretched out his arm and wrapped it around Rosie. âIâm sorry, Rosie. From now on, if you donât want to, I wonât drag you to these boring poker nights.â
Rosie shot back, âYou finally realize how dull they are for me?â
Lucas nodded. âYeah, I get it now.â
With his apologetic demeanor, Rosie decided to forgive him. âNext time, if Skylerâs around, call me over. If sheâs not, donât you dare bother me. Oh, and that guy Steven, he had his eye on someone, right? If he manages to win her over and brings her along, then you can invite me.â
Lucas leaned down and kissed her forehead. âDeal.â
Skyler quickly averted her gaze. Some things were not meant to be seen.
Rosie wiped her forehead with a look of disgust. âLucas, you kissed me again. We agreed no kisses until weâre married, youâre breaking your word.â
Lucas grinned at her. âHow can I resist? My Rosie is irresistible.â
Rosie retorted, âGet lost.â
Lucas persisted, âCome sit with me.â
Rosie protested, âAnd leave Skyler here by herself? Am I supposed to just abandon her?â
Skyler quickly interjected, âGuys, really, donât worry about me. Iâm used to being alone, itâs fine.â
Just then, Zavierâs voice cut through. âSkyler, can you grab me a bottle of water?â
With a convenient excuse to leave, Skyler stood up promptly. âSure.â
She handed the water to Zavier and was about to step away when he asked, âDo you play?â
Skyler had been taught to play poker at a young age as a social skill by her family, but she didnât enjoy it. âI know how.â
Zavier stood up, offering his seat. âCome on, play a couple of hands.â
Skyler was reluctant. âIâm not very good. What if I lose?â
Zavier shrugged. âSo you lose, whatâs the big deal?â
Steven chimed in, âSkyler, Zavierâs just worried you might be bored. Heâs only asking you to play a few hands. Donât let his sincere concern go unappreciated, okay?â
Skyler replied, âIâm not bored on my own, really.â
Zavier was firm. âIf I say play, you play. Whatâs with all the excuses?â
Rosie, who had followed Lucas over, added, âSkyler, just play. Itâs boring just sitting on the sidelines anyway.â

Skyler looked at Zavier, about to protest, but before she could get a word out, he had pressed her down into a chair.
Resigned to her fate, Skyler sat down to play. She wasnât sure if it was luck or something else, but whatever card she needed, someone would discard. As soon as she was ready to win, the player next to her threw out the exact card she needed.
Steven laughed. âNo wonder Zavier wanted you in the game. Look at that luck â youâve got the makings of a card shark.â
Zavier chuckled. âThe way you guys are playing, I canât bear to watch. How can you even give her credit?â
