Chapter 1704
She spun around and reached into her purse, pulling out a small box and handing it to Skyler. âOpen it up. See if you like it. If not, just tell me what youâre into, and Iâll get it for you.â
Skyler was a last-minute addition to the group, thanks to Zavierâs invitation. The presence of girls was a surprise, let alone the thought of bringing gifts. âRosle, I didnât get you anything.â
Rosie waved off the concern. âI gave you a gift, not to get one in return. Come on, open it! I really hope you like it.â
Feeling the sincerity in Rosieâs eyes, Skyler reluctantly unraveled the box to discover a stunning necklace inside. It bore no designer logo, and Skyler couldnât guess the price, but the craftsmanship and quality hinted at a hefty tag. âRosie, maybe I shouldnâtâ¦â
But Rosie cut in, âItâs a token of friendship. You canât say no.â
Skyler tried to protest, âButâ¦â
âNo buts,â Rosie insisted, her voice bubbling with enthusiasm. âYou have no idea how small my social circle is. Aside from Lucas and his buddies, Iâm pretty much a lone wolf. And now, finally, I meet a girl my age, and youâre not getting away from becoming my friend.e2
âAnd Iâm picky, you know. I felt a click with you the moment I saw you. Thatâs why Iâm befriending you. Hanging out with those boys is like being invisible. All they do is talk shop or play cards and drink. I might as well be talking to a wall.
âSkyler, letâs exchange numbers. If I ever need a chat and thereâs no one around, would you mind if I hit you up? A sweetheart like you wouldnât say no to me, right?â
Rosie was a whirlwind of words, leaving no room for Skyler to chime in.
Skyler ended up accepting the gift and swapping contact info with Rosie, mentally noting to return the favor with a thoughtful present after the final paycheck from the game came through.
âLetâs grab something to eat,â Rosie suggested, changing the subject.
âSure,â Skyler agreed.
Suddenly, Lucasâ voice called out, âRosie, come here.â
âWhatâs up?â she responded.
âIâm on a losing streak. I need my lucky charm,â he said, though he never truly cared about luck. He simply wanted Rosie by his side, every minute of the day.
Rosie retorted, âNo way!â
Steven chuckled, âLucas, have some dignity, will you?â
Zavier quipped, âLook whoâs talking!â
Marcus interjected, âFocus on the game, gents.â
Steven taunted, âMarc, I swear, if you werenât rich and good-looking, youâd be single for life.â
âIs a wife more important than a career?â Marcus asked dryly.
Steven shot back, âPlease, talking to you about passion is like talking to a brick wall.â
Lucas joined in, âMarc, donât you ever think of settling down? Sure, not all marriages are happy, but youâve got to look on the bright side sometimes.â
Marcus replied flatly, âYou guys are too young to be so obsessed with romance. Shouldnât you be focusing on your careers?â
Lucas defended, âWhatâs wrong with thinking about the girl you love?â
Steven added, âIf it werenât for his duty to run the Hartley Group, Marc wouldâve been a monk. Just look after yourselves and donât bother trying to change his mind.â
Marcus had enough of the topic and directed the attention back to the game. âZavier, itâs your turn.â
Zavier announced, âNine of diamonds.â
Marcus declared, âIâve won.â
