Chapter 1651
The four of them were born in the same year but in different months. The eldest among them had just turned twenty, having celebrated his birthday earlier in the year. Marcus, the youngest of the quartet, had his birthday coming in November, which meant he still had two months before he hit the big two-oh. They were all young men, full of vigor and an uncommon maturity for their age.
Marcus, the baby of the group, was ironically the most composed and restrained. Glancing at Zavier, he spoke up with a level tone, âWhatever the reason you got engaged to that girl, youâre betrothed now. You ought to treat her right.â
Zavier agreed, in principle, yet he harbored his own reservations. âI have no intention of marrying her. This engagement is bound to be broken off sooner or later. If Iâm too good to her or give her false hope, itâs going to hurt her even more when we call it off.â
His words, seemingly considerate, rang hollow upon closer listening.
Steven chimed in with a mischievous grin, âOh, Zavier, you couldâve asked anyone for advice, yet you ask Marc? The manâs a genius in business but a complete novice when it comes to love. You sure know how to pick âem.â
He turned to Lucas. âFor matters of the heart, you should be asking Lucas for guidance. Look at him, with his childhood sweetheart Rosie always singing his praises. Now thatâs a solid relationship.â
Lucas shot Steven a warning look. âDonât joke about Rosie.âe2
Steven knew Rosie was a sore spot for Lucas and quickly backpedaled. âI wasnât mocking her, just saying you two are tight.â
Just the mention of Rosie made Lucasâ eyes soften. âHow could we not be? Iâve looked out for her since we were kids.â
Zavier cut in, âHey, Iâm the man of the hour today. Letâs keep the focus here.â
Lucas retorted, âIf you had no plans to marry the girl, you shouldnât have gotten engaged.â
Zavier sighed, âWhat you donât understand is that my grandpa arranged this marriage without me even being present.â
Steven scoffed, âPlease, youâre not fooling anyone. You played a part in this, too.â
Zavier fell silent, and Lucas continued, âFrom what Iâve heard, the Blue family tree is a tangled mess. Your fiancéeâs father, the eldest in the Blue family, has only daughters, no sons. And thatâs not just from his wife but from all his mistresses, too.â
Steven spat, âWhat a scumbag! If my father Kenny ever pulled something like that, my mom would have his head.â
Realizing his words might have hit close to home for Marcus, given his family history, Steven quickly added, âMarc, no offense meant, buddy.â
Marcus just laughed it off. âIf someoneâs bold enough to do the deed, theyâre fair game for criticism.â
Steven nodded. âThatâs why the Hartley Group thrives under your leadership. Youâve got a broad perspective.â
Lucas interjected, âSteven, can you ever zip it?â
âFine, Iâll be quiet,â Steven conceded.
Lucas went on, âThe Blue family wonât pass the reins to a family branch with no male heir. So, your fiancéeâs parents are desperate not to lose their standing and think a marriage alliance with a formidable family might secure their position. But you know as well as I do, Zavier, your fiancée is just a pawn in the Blue familyâs gameâ¦â
He paused before adding, âIf you end the engagement, that girlâs future might not be so bright.â
Zavier knew the logic all too well but was stubborn. âAm I not just a pawn for the Rivera family myself?â

He wasnât the only one; it was the same for his father and his brother. The more he thought about it, the more his mood soured. Wishing to change the subject, Zavier looked over at Marcus. âAt least youâve got it good, Marc. So young, yet youâve already taken the reins of your familyâs empire without anyone else pulling your strings.â
Marcus offered a sly smile and deftly switched topics. âI brought some excellent liquor. How about we have a few drinks?â
