Chapter 1300
Cornelia picked up her phone, cool as a cucumber, and started going through the news about Marcus, âMarcus died of illness. Marcus died in a car crash? Marcusâ¦â
Grandpa Augustine spoke up, âNelly, if youâre upset, just say it out loud. You canât keep it all bottled up.â
Cornelia laughed, âGrandpa, why would I be upset?â
Grandpa Augustine fell silent. He wasnât a fool. He knew Cornelia still had feelings for Marcus deep down. But she was too stubborn, too proud to admit she couldnât forget a man whoâd done her dirty. So she had to act like she didnât give a damn.
However, she surprised Grandpa Augustine with her response, âIf Marcus really kicked the bucket, nobody would know. The fact that news of his death is spreading like wildfire, and everyone knows about it, so itâs probably fake news.â
Grandpa Augustine asked, âWhy would you think that?â
Cornelia said, âBased on what I know about Marcus, thatâs what I think.â
Truth was, Cornelia didnât have a clue. She was just hoping things would turn out the way she wanted. She wasnât ready to admit that when she first heard of Marcusâ death, for a split second, her mind was all over the place. She used mealtime as an excuse to pull herself together and think about how likely it was that Marcus was really dead.
Marcus had old injuries and was never in the best shape, but with Dr. Lester looking after him, he was on the mend. There was no way heâd drop dead because of that. As for the other rumors online, like an accident, it was possible. But the odds were slim to none.
Right! There was no way!
At least that was what Cornelia kept telling herself.
Grandpa Augustine suggested, âWhy donât you give Granny Luisa a call and find out whatâs going on?â
âOkay.â Cornelia found Granny Luisaâs number. All she had to do was swipe her finger and she could dial Granny Luisa.
Cornelia looked at the number but couldnât bring herself to call. She was scared, scared of hearing bad news on the other end. But she knew running away wouldnât solve anything. She had to face the music. So, she gathered her courage and dialed Granny Luisa.
Before Cornelia could say anything, she heard a familiar laugh. Granny Luisaâs voice sounded overjoyed, âTahlia, great news, the Hartley family finally has an heir. Youâre amazing, you got knocked up by Marc so quickly. And here your sister Cornelia was with Marc for so long and never got pregnant.â
Tahlia chimed in, âGranny, the doctor told me today the babyâs already formed.â
Granny Luisa said excitedly, âReally? Did they tell you if itâs a boy or a girl?â
Tahlia said, âI didnât ask, nor do I plan to. Marc said he doesnât care if itâs a boy or a girl, as long as itâs mine, heâll love it.â
Hearing this, Cornelia quietly hung up the phone.
