Chapter 1239
âIâve always been on my own, Cornelia took a step back, creating a gap between her and Marcus Marcus, Iâve got something to spill.â
âShool, Iâm all ears. Marcusâ voice was still smooth and pleasant, but it didnât have its usual deep and powerful tone
Cornelia noticed something odd about his breath, it seemed a bit ragged But he looked okay, so she didnât think much of it. âIf you ever fall for some other women in the future, make sure you give your current girlfriend a headsâup. That cold attitude of yours, itâs really gutâwrenchingâ
Marcus took a pause before he responded, âIâm sorryâ
Cornelia didnât expect an apology from him. His apology meant he knew he messed up, yet he still went ahead with it. This meant he no longer considered her feelings when making decisions
âItâs water under the bridge. Whatâs the use of saying sorry now? Cornella smiled.
âI know sorry doesnât cut it.â Marcus was cut off by a sudden coughing fit.
Cornelia instinctively wanted to help him, but she held herself back. âNeed me to call a doc?â
Cornelia hoped Marcus would take care of himself, but then she reminded herself that they were no longer together it was someone elseâs job to worry about his health, she didnât have to butt in
Luckily, Marcusâ coughing fit stopped just after a few coughs. âLet me walk you home, okay?â
âNo needâ Cornelia smiled and took out a fancy box from her bag âHereâs your necklace back.â
Marcusâ gaze dropped to the box she was offering, but he didnât take it. The necklace is already yours.â
âIt was never mine to begin with, it was meant for your wife, and Iâm no longer your wife. Itâs too much. I donât want it. I donât want to be reminded of my failed marriage every time I see itâ
âA necklace is an accessory, itâs not meant to be taken back once given. Itâs yours, you can do whatever you want with it.
âWell then, Iâll just get rid of it.â Cornelia lifted her hand and threw the box on the ground, then she laughed. âAre you okay with the way I handled it?â
The box broke apart, the necklace inside snapped, the gems and embellishments scattered, beyond repair. Cornelia looked at the mess and suddenly laughed out. âMarcus, you have no idea how hard I worked to keep a straight face talking to you. You also have no clue how much I wanted to rip your mask off. So, Marcus, letâs not see each other again, okay?â
Marcus felt a sharp pain in his chest, almost coughed up blood, but he managed to control it.
Cornelia gave him a smile, then turned and walked away.
âCorneliaâ
Marcus called out her name again. But this time, Cornelia didnât stop, neither did she turn around. She just walked away. Before long, she disappeared from his sight, as if she had completely vanished from his world.
Marcus suddenly lost his balance, but thankfully, Jayden appeared just in time to support him. âPresident Hartley-â
Marcus took a deep breath, stood up straight again, watching Corneliaâs fading figure.
When Cornelia proposed the divorce, she was eerily calm, almost inhumanly so. She left the Hartley family, left him, all with a level head. When they met again, she was still composed, not a hint of emotional turmoil.
Marcus knew all too well, the more a person suppressed their emotions, the more likely they were to have an internal crisis. This was the only emotional outburst from Cornelia since she had brought up the divorce.
