Chapter 1138
After all, Augustine was getting on in years, and his health was on the decline. He hoped that each day ahead would be comfortable and easy for Augustine.
Alfredo walked into the room and plonked himself right next to Grandpa Augustine, âAugustine!â
His conversation with his wife interrupted, Grandpa Augustine was ticked off, âWhy are you here now?â
Alfredo said, 1 want to have a chat.â
Grandpa Augustine said, âCome find me tomorrow, Iâm swamped at the moment.â
Alfredo looked up, a bit unnerved by the woman in the photo above, as if she had been watching him all along. Thereâs something I need to come clean
about.â
Grandpa Augustine said, âTalk about it tomorrow, Iâm busy right now.â
Alfredo said, âThis has to do with Silvia.â
At the mention of Silviaâs name, Grandpa Augustine suddenly turned to look at Alfredo, âWhatâs this got to do with her?â
Alfredo said, âBack then, I knew that our elders wanted to split you two apart, but I didnât tell you. I pretended to find out about it the same time you did.â
Grandpa Augustine laughed, âYou thought I had no idea you knew all along?â
Alfredo asked. âThen why didnât you blame me?â
Grandpa Augustine said, âWhy would I blame you? Youâve never done anything to her or our children. You wouldnât hurt them. The only one who messed up was me. I knew my family was arranging a marriage for me. They didnât want me marrying an outsider. But I naively thought that having a child would force them to accept Silvia and our child as members of the Duran family. It was my naivety and arrogance that ruined them. Or more accurately, it was my weakness that hurt them. If I had been strong enough back then, not controlled by my family, and able to decide my own life, none of this tragedy would have happenedâ
Over the years, Grandpa Augustine had never blamed anyone else. He had always known the root cause of the tragedy. And because he knew everything. his heart ached every day.
Alfredo said, âIf I had told you earlier, if I had let you know the real reason why the elders called you back to the Capital, maybe things would have turned out differentlyâ
Grandpa Augustine said, âYou were just like me then. You were weak, so you had to follow the familyâs plans. Telling me earlier, what would that have changed? We probably couldnât have changed anything, and you would have been cast aside by the family, too.â
Alfredo said, âThankfully, we both ended up stronger and gained control over the family. This allowed our youngest brother to marry the woman he loves.â Grandpa Augustine said, âWeâre eight siblings, and the first seven of us couldnât decide our own marriages. Our marriages werenât what we wanted Only our youngest brotherâs marriage brings some comfort.â
Alfredo asked, âFeel like a drink? How about we have a glass?â
Grandpa Augustine said, âButler, bring a bottle of wine.â
The butler quickly brought the wine and snacks. After their glasses were filled, the butler wisely left.
Alfredo raised his glass, âAugustine, to you meeting a wonderful granddaughter, cheers!â
Grandpa Augustine asked, âYouâve noticed Nellyâs strengths too?â
Alfredo said, straightforwardly, âI had someone investigate her.â
Grandpa Augustine said, âYouâve really gone rogue. In relationships, trust is the most important thing. By investigating Nelly, youâve broken that trust between us.â
