Chapter 1028
Cornelia said, âYeah, itâs quite possible that our mom wasnât our mom at that time, but the woman we now know as Clair.â
Tahlia asked, âOur dad loved our mom so much, wouldnât he have noticed if his wife was switched?â
Cornelia replied, âIâm not entirely sure about the specifics of what happened back then. Maybe because our dad loved our mom so much, thatâs why he never suspected anything when that woman pretended to be her.â
Tahlia asked, âWhat do we do now?â
Cornelia said, âThe one with all the answers about what happened back then would be Clair. Sheâs our only lead.â
Tahlia asked, âIs there anything I could do to help?â
Cornelia ruffled Tahliaâs hair and said, âJust keep doing your job. Iâll handle the rest. Letâs head back to Riverton. If Marcus comes home from work and Iâm not there, heâll be
worried sick.â
Tahlia asked, âAre you staying at home tonight or going over to his place?â
Cornelia said, âIâll stay with you tonight. Let him have his house to himself.â
Tahlia said, âYou and Mr. Hartley just got married. You should spend more time with him. I donât want to get in the way.â
Cornelia said, âEnough chit-chat. Letâs go home.â
Cornelia drove back the same way they came. Over an hour later, they exited the highway. As soon as Corneliaâs car got off the highway, Marcus called.
Cornelia picked up immediately and was met with Marcusâ deep voice, âPull over now!â
She pulled over at once. A familiar luxury car was parked next to her in the parking area. Marcus slowly rolled down his window and looked at her.
Cornelia asked, âWhat are you doing here?â
Marcus said, âGet in my car.â
Cornelia asked, âWhat about my car?â
Marcus said, âIâll have Austin drive your sister home.â
He looked pi ss ed.
Cornelia didnât dare refuse again. She turned to Tahlia and said, âTahlia, you go home with Austin. I need to see whatâs up with Marcus.â
Tahlia said, âOkay.â
Cornelia went over to Marcusâ car. She thought he wanted her to drive, so she headed straight for the driverâs seat.
Marcus opened the back door, got out of the car, and said, âYouâre riding shotgun. Iâm driving.â
Cornelia obediently sat in the passenger seat.
Marcus started the car and quickly got back on the road.
Cornelia glanced at his grim expression and asked, âWhatâs wrong? Why are you mad?â
Marcus said, âDonât drive alone for a while. Iâm worried someone might tamper with your car.â
Corneliaâs heart ski p ped a beat, âYou mean.â
Marcus took one hand off the wheel, held Corneliaâs hand, and said, âBrennen wants something Iâm not giving him. Iâm worried he might hurt you.â
Cornelia said, âOkay, Iâll be more careful.â
Marcus said, âFrom now on, you canât leave my sight.â
